  1. Yes, the type of orbit you are searching for is a L2 LaGrangian orbit, where the combined gravity of the two bodies (i.e. the star Sol and the planet Earth) act on a third body (i.e. the Herschel Space Observatory) to keep the planet and telescope at the same rotational speed at different orbital heights. the simplest way to think about this is that the angular velocity to maintain a given orbital height is directly related to the force of gravity of a mass. a higher orbit will be angularly slower for the same mass, and the same orbit will be anglarly faster for a larger mass. an object in the L2 orbit will be orbiting at the same angular velocity as the planet because it is orbiting the combined center of mass of the two bodies, which is slightly larger then the center of mass of the central body alone. Unfortunately, stock KSP uses patched conic orbits, rather then (watch bop and Pol around :30, super interesting interactions) that would allow for LaGrangian and other exotic orbital interactions. Patched conics only simulate Kepler's laws, not Newtonian or relativistic gravity. The typical reason for this that n-Body calculations get exponentially harder as N increases, such that true N-Body physics simulations for 300+ part stations would melt a typical CPU, that orbital prediction asymptotically approaches impossible, or that floating point errors in weak gravitational interactions would affect the system chaotically (read: summon the kraken); all of which are very true. Nevertheless, someone is trying it, which is very kerbal, never let the kraken stop you from strapping something explosive onto something else.
  2. as has been mentioned, scott intentionally left his interstellar quest running in 0.23.5, because of the bugs in KSPi 0.11 when running on 0.24.2. you should go over here and get the WaveFunction fork, since it fixes a ton of bugs and includes lots of new-ness-ness.
  3. EVERY version of B9 has been ram intensive. the 4.0 release was enough to crash my .22 game on it's own without texture reduction. mere gigabytes are simply insufficient to hold this much awesome space plane pretty. it's a double tragedy is that the x64 version is so unstable, otherwise we could all bask in the HX fuselage system it it's existential high def glory.
  4. i apologize if this has been posted before, but i can't seem to locate it. i'm having a bit of trouble with explode-y parts. any grabable part, while on or dropped from a kerbonaut's back, seems very prone to crashing into minimus explosively, even at LT 1 m/s. I've gone through three missions to deliver a packrat to Minimus base #1, only to blow up some critical part during assembly. once, a front bumper part exploded because it was attached to a ground pylon, and i grabbed the pylon, letting the part loose LT 1 m above the surface, and it explosively collided, and then the pylon exploded right off Gerrim Kerman's back. this doesn't seem to happen on kerbin, since i was able to assemble a test rover on the launchpad and set it out to monitor impacts before launching my support missions to Mini Base 1. I'm using JeffersonFlight's patches in KSP 0.24.2 x86, with a large boat of other mods (available upon request). any help in increasing the durability of these parts would be greatly appreciated.
  5. Since this is generated by script, any chance of releasing that script so we could play with the parameters? maybe add some logic to programatically guess stored sizes, update it for new versions of supported mod (i.e. KSPi experimental converts most parts to tweakscale, and the new B9 did all kinds of rejiggering) or generate our own configs for unsupported mods (looking at you: SCANsat). it seems like the interesting thing here is the mechanism to build the config, not necessarily the config itself.
  6. Sure you do: the thermal turbojets are configured to heat the atmosphere as eject it at high speeds as propellant. you could use golf balls too. you just need to throw things out the back with enough efficiency. Yup, in the same way that a hybrid rocket can use either liquid fuel and atmospheric oxygen (like a traditional turbojet) or switch over to LF+Ox for extra-atmospheric operation (like a traditional rocket). the difference is that the Thermal systems use the reactor's heat as the propelling energy, rather then the explosive fuels. the only problem with plasma thrusters is the conversion rates. to go from Fission/Fusion/antiproton/etc to Thermal/Charged Baryons/etc to Electricity to vector thrust you have an incomplete conversion at each step, and a little loss at each step. the problem gets worse when you add two microwave steps into the mix. Efficient systems should minimize this loss, since it's always easier to not generate power that isn't being useful. the counter argument is that, sometimes, local efficiency is gained at the expense of systematic inefficiencies. This is the argument for electric cars too, that it's more efficient to generate lots of kinetic energy at high volume, high efficiency, electrical generators and transfer that energy over inefficient power lines to inefficient electrical motors connected to wheels then to just start with inefficient kinetic motors that are directly connected to wheels.
  7. You can, but you need SOMETHING to throw out the back in order to make go. the tyranny of the rocket equation at work. if you right click on the thrusters, there should be an option to toggle propellant mode, and it will offer you whatever propellant is available on the craft, including IntakeAir, which is used to make atmospheric planes that only need the the air around them. Later in the tech tree, you'll get Quantum Vacuum Thrusters, which are upgraded Plasma Thrusters, which can push spacecraft with only electrical megawatts, but 1) you need LOTS and 2) the thrust is very low (about 1/50th the thermal system).
  8. I'm not up to beamed power networks in my .24 game, and the last time i was was KSPi .8 or .9, so I might be dealing with older information. when i was setting up for it, i ran a bunch of experiments and discovered the thermal engine would die if I flew directly away from my test generator, where the inline receiver was in the MW shadow of the thermal engine & power was proportional to the direction. maybe i was interpreting the behavior wrong? again, been a while since i was doing this, but my last MW constellation 16 in 250 km 45 deg orbit, arranged such that each pair would cross the plane and each other at roughly the same time as another pair at the same longitude would be at the northern and southern peaks. each had a transmitter, a relay, and a fairly large fusion generator (the 2.5m pair, maybe?) took FOREVER to get it all up and synchronized, and .23 came out almost immediately after, so i had to toss it all and start over. i'm nearing that point in my .24 game now, i probably will go with half as many, in polar orbits, at a much higher altitudes, assuming the x64 version stays relatively stable and i can afford it, fusion power looks STUPIDLY expensive right now, but i'm still a ways away. haven't even got my first science station up yet.
  9. Working as intended. Microwaves are blocked by most everything that blocks visible light you'll want to set up a Satellite constellation of repeaters (this is what the relay is for, you set up a big generator and a bunch of relays to get continual coverage), or, for bigger apps, lots of generator with attached transceivers. Input power depends on line of sight to the sender. as you turn, other parts of the rover would block line of sight, occluding the beamed power. yet another reason to have a fairly dense constellation, so you can get counter-balanced power from 2 or 3 sources.
  10. i ran into the same issue when i first installed FAR. the change is not in your rockets, but in the fact that the aerodynamic model is no longer counting every single inside part as hitting the air full and flat. Master Tao put it correctly, expect you will need about 1000 ms less delta V, because that used to be used to fight atmospheric drag from inside and profile parts.
  11. how random. why is this getting traction? of course, the only response is Reference Pear: http://www.shutupandsitdown.com/blog/post/review-libertalia/
  12. Truly this is the most kerbal of all engineering projects; The biggest booster, turned by even more boosters, made out of the cheapest materials that can be found. Somewhere, Wernher Von Kerman weeps a single tear of joy, and doesn't know why.
  13. you could do what FAR does, and include a GameData folder in your package, and place the ModuleManager DLL in the right place in that folder. This gives you the advantage of including MM, while still respecting the developers recommended usage. Fortunately, MM includes a well behaved version checker, so this discussion is both moot and academic. Alternatively, we're chatting on a forum designed for an orbital mechanics simulator involving a 1960's era space program on a planet of little green frog eyed guys that all have the family name "Kermin", so "moot and academic" seems to be the order of the day.
  14. I usually avoid prescribing things because 1) it feels somewhat disrespectful to the creator's artistic license and original conception, and 2) i'm usually much more impressed by what that authors come up with independently. Fractal and Wavefunction have consistently surprised and impressed me with what this mod provides. now, ignoring all of that, I think this particular idea has merit. I like the idea of an "Retrofit Kit", containing all the tools, parts, materials, etc to retrofit gear on orbit. you could create a new resource for retrofitting parts, only purchasable from the VAB/SPH (mining improved Heisenberg compensators? not a thing; but field manufacturing maybe?) and each part that was upgraded could consume a certain amount of this resource, based on the tech level from and to, and the size and complexity of the part. maybe the 3.5m dusty plasma fusion reactor takes 1000 retrofit parts, say 10 1 meter retrofitting kits, but a small graphite heat radiator only takes 10 parts, 1/10th of a full sized kit, maybe a small side mount thing? There seems to be sufficent preceident. "outside" parts like radiators, solar panels, sensors, etc might require EVA, whereas inside parts like generators, reactors, etc could be done without getting off the boat. Obviously the computer core would still require only science and time, because the poetry of that is undeniable. Sentience requires only sufficient knowledge refined by introspection and reflection.
  15. Further testing on my case from the other thread shows that toolbar is NOT required to trigger this bug. it looks like toolbar exacerbates the issue, but given some of the other reports, there seems to be very little overlap on the set of mods that trigger this access violation. SPECULATION HERE: it seems like somewhere around 5 plugins are required to start triggering this, so something with functional memory allocation? or possibly the DLL handler? i'm way out in the W-A-G territory here.
  16. I'm crossposting my experience and logs from the x64 compatability thread, in case this data helps your development. I don't know if this is something specific to the Toolbar plugin, or just something that these mods are clunking into by accident on the x64 version only. Since i am apparently Ms. Untrustworthy Kerbal right now, my post hasn't appeared in the listing, so here is the content repeated: There seems to be a multi-mod incompatibility with the following mods: Kerbal Engineer Redux - v0.6.2.7 SCANsat v6.1 StationScience 0.9 ModStatistics 1.0.3 (probably not related, but it keeps reinstalling itself, so it can't be ruled out) Toolbar 1.7.4 Module Manager 2.2.0 (which is weird, because 0 patches and 0 hidden on the loading screen) Together, they cause a crash somewhere between starting a new career mode and placing the first root part in the VAB for the x64 version, but not in x86. Removing any of the above mods eliminates the crash, as does switching to the 32-bit KSP.exe I suspect this has something to do with the way that toolbar is enumerating buttons, because each of those mods creates at least one toolbar button. Here is a big pile of crash reports, and here is the relevant portion of the output_log.txt: ------------------- initializing editor mode... ------------------ (Filename: C:/BuildAgent/work/d63dfc6385190b60/artifacts/StandalonePlayerGenerated/UnityEngineDebug.cpp Line: 49) editor started (Filename: C:/BuildAgent/work/d63dfc6385190b60/artifacts/StandalonePlayerGenerated/UnityEngineDebug.cpp Line: 49) FF: EventObserver:: OnGameStateCreated 44644.5784954184, game status: ONGOING, scene EDITOR (Filename: C:/BuildAgent/work/d63dfc6385190b60/artifacts/StandalonePlayerGenerated/UnityEngineDebug.cpp Line: 49) Untitled Space Craft - Untitled Space Craft (Filename: C:/BuildAgent/work/d63dfc6385190b60/artifacts/StandalonePlayerGenerated/UnityEngineDebug.cpp Line: 49) FF: adding toolbar buttons (Filename: C:/BuildAgent/work/d63dfc6385190b60/artifacts/StandalonePlayerGenerated/UnityEngineDebug.cpp Line: 49) number of achievements: 136 in 6 categories (Filename: C:/BuildAgent/work/d63dfc6385190b60/artifacts/StandalonePlayerGenerated/UnityEngineDebug.cpp Line: 49) loaded 12 earned achievements (Filename: C:/BuildAgent/work/d63dfc6385190b60/artifacts/StandalonePlayerGenerated/UnityEngineDebug.cpp Line: 49) Crash!!!
