I'll worry about aesthetics when I can get the pancakes to land on Duna or Eve without explosions, wobbling and structural failures.
-
I finally managed to get a test probe in Duna's SOI. I could have probably landed the craft, but I forgot to add fuel lines and RCS to the last stage and now I'm stuck in a highly excentric orbit. Here's a shot of the ship: I can't wait to send Jeb, Bill and Bob to another planet!
-
That's impressive for only three months of playing. Good luck on your next missions, and don't try to land on Jool!

Lowest amount of parts to Minmus and back!

Spacewalking down to Minmus and then back to orbit count as a "landing"? -
dV Needed to land on Minmus?
pauix replied to Evenger14's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I did indeed take a sample (I was in sandbox, but hey, it's SCIENCE! ), but I messed up the rendez-vous and there's a 70º angle between Kirrim's orbit and his spacecraft's orbit, so I can't send the data back. Once I rescue him and the samples, I'll probably be prepared to attempt a trip to Duna and an "Ikewalk" -
dV Needed to land on Minmus?

If my kerbals agree to do it, I'll try it on my next career. Right now, they are growing suspicious about the whole "for SCIENCE!" thingy: -
I do whatever the leftovers of my fuel tanks and my RCS let me do and then, when I notice my periapsis is too high, I EVA and push the rocket until I get to 30,000m.
-
After seeing Scott Manley's "longest spacewal ever" and a comment from another thread, I decided to try my luck and spacewalk to Minmus: Things did not go as planned and now Kirrim is stuck on Minmus with no fuel to get back. I guess I'll have to send yet another rescue mission

dV Needed to land on Minmus?

So, assuming an EVA pack has around 500m/s of Delta-V, does this mean I can deorbit from a 10km orbit, plant a flag and go up again in EVA mode? I'm gonna try it as soon as I get home. -
Poll: Kerbal Space Program's Mun Landers
pauix replied to AncientAstronaut's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
I can land there without problems, but I still have trouble getting back: -

Happens to the best of us. Here's Chad after a "successful landing": And here's the rescue craft Bob tried to use get him back to Kerbin: -
A friend interested me in the game during its baby steps (I believe I started during the KSP 0.7, when Fuel lines, the Mün or the hangar didn'texist).
-
The most important lesson I've learnt is that understanding how the EVA controls work is a good training for whenever you want to dock. Also, I've discovered that the EVA jetpack has a lot of dV and that it can be used to push your ship when it runs out of fuel So THIS is why almost every single plane I build never made it across the runway! Thanks a lot, man!

A stupid thing I've done too many times is placing the antenna on top of the door, meaning the Kerbal can't get out of the pod and collect samples.
-
Sometimes I feel bad about what I do to my kerbals.
pauix replied to michaelphoenix22's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Indeed. The safest place for a Kerbal is being trapped somewhere far away from kerbin, where "Recover vessel" will not bring them back for more punishment. -
I once "landed" on the KSP 0.13 Mün. The ship tumbled down a crater and lost some pieces, but the command pod stood firm. Also, I managed to land on Minmus using only an EVA pack. Now I need to get a rescue ship near Bob...

What is the most evil thing you can do to your Kerbals?
pauix replied to Nick7892's topic in KSP1 Discussion
You guys are evil. I just leave bad pilots stranded in their crash sites: -
After a few failed attempts (which mainly involved broken solar panels, I finally managed to dock two ships without smashing solar panels! <iframe class="imgur-album" width="100%" height="550" frameborder="0" src="http://imgur.com/a/vNWr3/embed"></iframe>

"Should I use Boosters or Mainsails?"
-
I made a quick test and it worked fine (a bit difficult to control, but I think the SRB is to blame). I even found a way to spare poor Fergan Kerman's life: <iframe class="imgur-album" width="100%" height="550" frameborder="0" src="http://imgur.com/a/shkIr/embed"></iframe> EDIT: Some further improvements to this vehicle (adding an inline reaction wheel) managed to get its top speed up to 303m/s.

Minmus is further away. Most beginners (myself included) think the Mün is easier to land on because it is nearer.

That reminds me of 'Breaking Strain', by Clarke.
