The "You know you're playing a lot of KSP when..." thread
Overland replied to Phenom Anon X's topic in KSP1 Discussion
when its 8pm..im on a late running train from work after getting up at 4am for my work train.. and all i can think about is getting home intime to fire up 4408 "Elcano Challenge" my kerbal landliner train to put some ks on the clock -

Sorry im having to bail from this challenge, ive taken up the elcano instead.. goodluck everyone -
The Elcano Challenge : Ground-based circumnavigation
Overland replied to Fengist's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Ill take a dedicated 44 class.. might take a while. eg a few days after work. top speed 31m/s Shes run by a crude diesel electric system, I got my joystick throttle all the way forward and modified rover wheels drinking 12 units of power each with increased torque.. no batteries.. the engines alernators pump out 180 units of power that drive the wheels when at full RPM.. runs off normal jet fuel.. less RPM. less power.. less torque.. its a working system...im happy with it 4408 - Elcano Challenge underway.. I forgot the names of the crew i'll add them later tomorrow after the run so I dont go replacing any.. Even with a dedicated xbox steering wheel and reverser its still a very challenging thing. I look forward to it however long or short it may be and goodluck to all Crew poses with KTP-44 Class Mark 3 - 4408 Before depature 4408 Getting underway, turning for the mountains behind KSC- DAY 1 UPDATE: I discovered a long known problem not thought about for a while because its less of a problem on the usual fuel run to Mount kembla station - when the loco is climbing a steep hill or slightly sloping ground.. the head lights no longer illuminate the ground hence the trains flying blind.. Given that this is actually a serious attempt.. Ive taken 4408 Back to the yard (KSC) for some upgrading.. including additional spotlights in the locos toolbox for attaching if I need more while underway.. and installing a few illumination mods.. also fixed the cab from having that speedo the wrong way around.... She'll be fired up again tomorrow afternoon to resume the challenge Also for the first time ever in almost 6 months.. #1 generator exploded under normal load.. . ive not changed the configuration files so.. I dunno how it happened really.. luckily shes close enough to the yard to go back for repairs.. if it happens anywhere outside of 10km outbound.. I'll live with it Update 2 - This will be my final update on this post before moving to a dedicated Weblog Having established that the existing design of the fuel tankers is inferior for long range use, I reverted back to an older design using jet fuel tanks rather than the rocket fuel tanks.. originally the switch was made because even with a steering wheel.. the more segments a wagon has.. the more skittish it becomes as they flex the body when turning too suddenly.. especially the last wagon.. ends up doing the jig wanting to become one with the ground in a ball of flame.. something largely unnoticed from the locomotive other than the shudder and the sudden drop in fuel count when I overhauled 4408 lastnight, I added 3 jet fuel tankers and a modified hybrid fuel tank/passenger car.. (not really safe but its KSP.. nothing is... if there was flowers in the game they'd probably explode and kill someone too) I caught up with the wreck of 4404 from some weeks ago again.. planting a flag and stabling for the night.. the locomotives shut down.. with the passenger car auxiliary generator powering lights A small 20km down.. but im happy rest goes on my blog where i'll include a weekly video update and screenshots every other day Goodluck all By the way. Jeb is the driver of this service finally.. the other 2 crew remain in the passenger car at the back.. unfortunately ive reinforced the cab..but not passenger compartments.. if theres a crash.. jeb will survive.. the 2 less popular sprites.. well... theres plenty where they came from 4408s burned through around 100 units of fuel in just 20km.. but I think its more to do with having both generators running constantly vs the old practise of only firing up generator #2 to climb hills.. it remains to be seen how far 2700 units of fuel gets the train.. but I can always launch a fuel tank nearby and refuel at a stopover... Im sure also the wreck of 4404 has atleast one intact fuel tank I can drain.. a morbid.. but necessary action:( 4408 shuts down for the night - aux generator running - other than the passenger car having 2 batteries that are shut off, everything depends on generator power to run.. hence the need for the smaller generator on the passenger car -
The Trans-Kontinental Train Challenge!
Overland replied to Elowiny's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Oh my!.. thats just.... shes beautiful!! very galaxy railways.. makes me wish I didnt delete all them mark 3 parts so I can run KSP on 2gb of ram.. shes really a thing of beauty mate very well done.. you have my admiration and respect as a fellow Kerbal Train Driver.. I see you modded engines into alternators too AND!.. the runway thing.. exploding runway.. my question to squad would be WHY?!.. the amount of time ive come in after a long drive and one of the trains wheels has tapped the runway too hard destroying it and my train in the progress.. its absolutely insane.. runway is cement.. not C4.. very odd -
The Trans-Kontinental Train Challenge!
Overland replied to Elowiny's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I'm In! Ive installed KAS system on my 44 class so she can refuel at any "station" eg.. landed orange tank.. although I gather im not accepted fully because I intend to drive the train around the water.. shes around 100 tons because of the modified wheels and ballast.. exceptionally hard to even lift a single locomotive into the air with any conventional means.. believe me ive tried Furthest ive driven is 100km so far without breaking anything criticly though.. its a rough ride once you get past them mountains either side of the KSC around 40km out.. easy to make a mistake.. I'll have to give the full train brakes.. currently only the locomotive has brakes.. the cars are unbraked.. her top speed is around 30m/s a little bit more but the generators overheat with extended 100% power.. I'll see how I go though Best of luck to everyone else and yourself One thing.. the destination... would that happen to be where KSC2 is? -
At the moment sitting comfortably in a passenger carriage in KSC's yard.. exiled from driving until further notice.. 4407 just isnt a random number.. theres been 7 trains of this type all ended horribly.. and it may just be a coincidence but. every single one of them had jeb at the controls when it happened previous trains actually lived more than 1 day and stabled at KSC after a long days work.. the ones he pilots seem to prefer to "stable" themselves in multiple peices around 1 hour or so from KSC
-
also proved its near impossible to drive a landtrain well and film the same thing at the same time without being boring... pass views side views look all nice.. but an educated landliner driver knows that 1 mistake can mean the difference between another pile of bits on a mountain side..and a train that returned home safely with 100km on the clock happy and proud from a successful run a 44 departing a recent crash site - which itself was made while trying to record.. 1 kerbal saved out of 4 and......excuse the terrible start.. I forgot to start generator #2.. trying to start on a hill with half power isnt a good idea (new engine sound for my crude diesel-electric transmission system)

Is KSP the greatest video game ever made?
Overland replied to sedativechunk's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I liked gmod.. but maps are too small.. I loved gmod even more when they discovered trains work and I found sligwolf's stuff.. but maps are too small.. I brought another game called homebrew sandbox.. the map is too small there too.. I brought KSP for the rockets, planes and explosions... Then I discovered land-trains exist.. abandoned my experiments with rails in KSP.. now I drive trains with a steering wheel... it IS the best game ever made.. for me ... for much more than the space.. and for its ability to turn minutes into hours.. without time acceleration (Just one more modification then i'll goto bed... oh.. thats not the moon anymore and birds dont sing at night... usually how my weekends go if I fire up KSP) Example - a rough edit this is my kerbal space program.. there is many like it but this one is mine http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/29533-What-did-you-do-in-KSP-today?p=1820937&viewfull=1#post1820937 -
Does she steer any good? rear propulsion would cause the train to bunch up and snake no?.. I tried driving 4407 with keyboard today.. she rolled just short of the KSC (instant return to launch).. I quickly plug back in my steering wheel and throttle.. makes such an amazing difference even vs joystick.. tight radius turns and the rear tanker wagons never loses track.. ive yet to work out why.. I guess its because keyboard is instant left or right hard over Speaking of which.. I rescued the crew of lost train 4404.. yes the old girl in signature finally bit the dust some time ago on a hill.. like a caterpillar thats hit with flyspray..one part rolled.. then the rest did.. my fault for not applying dynamic brakes at 43m/s.. too lazy to reach over to hit the reverser on my joystick into reverse brakes hissed, engines shut down instantly to try and save her.. but it was no good, the loco exploded followed by everything else.... except the reinforced cab.. a headlight and a battery... that was some time ago.. today armed with a newly redesigned - more powerful engined 4407.. I headed out to pickup jeb, bob and bill.. arriving as the light faded.. to find the headlight on 4404's cab still burning brightly.. so using KAS I ripped off the headlight for later use...this is my first time installing anything with KAS.. I attached the headlight to one of the tanker wagons, facing the wrong way.. then discovered it was too high to take off again... I wasnt happy Bill was though .. after getting out of the cab and being rescued

During a testrun of 4406.. I accidently hit EVA instead of IVA.. a kerbal that wasnt jeb and first name probably strange in anycase.. really didnt like hanging off the running boards as I applied the train brakes and came to a stop.. this very fearful expression became apparent.. odd since ive had kerbals re-enter kerbins atmosphere alone and never look as scared as this.. I guess kerbals are used to rockets and flight.. not so much overland-trains

Has anyone done a real-time mission in KSP before?
Overland replied to DarthZazen's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Longest mission so far is 2-3 hours long and it ended badly when I was a rush to get back to KSC .. only made it around 50km of the 80km round trip with a 44 class leading a mixed train.. already missing 1 kerbal and a gaurdsvan that exploded on the crest of a hill.. Time acceleration is a bad thing if your using KSP for ground transport.. its bad enough when your shuddering along at 45m/s with a 4 car train where the slightest miscalculation ends up with wheels pointing to the sky, fuel tanks heading for the ground..and some pretty orange explosions almost always follow.. Only ever used time acceleration recently while flying a plane scouting out KSC2 for a future station.. compared to ground operations.. flyings just. well.. it lacks anything dangerous other than the ground if you point the wrong way -
Electricity Generators
Overland replied to -RanZ-'s topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
GENERATORS!! I was wondering if anyone had the same idea I did a while back.. this indirectly through a year of experimentation and spur of the moment thoughts that lead to personal happyness.. is very much a subject I know alot about See, I drive generators.. that train in my signature made from stock and sam hall mod parts.. modded by myself.. is nothing more than a self propelled generator.. atleast until I can 3d model my own.. the technical ideal behind it all is sound also See a year ago I was driving trains.. and I was using the batteries to drive the rover wheels stock... then using the jet turbines to charge the batteries.. it was a good idea and a good workable design.. but a tad too slow.. I actually didnt need thrust on some locomotives but rather electricity and I didnt like the idea of coating something in them ugly spikey radioactive things or solar panels so I went into the config files to edit.. most jet and or rocket engines have a line that says Alternator the figure around that is the amount of power they they generate while running.. its suprisingly weak I found I think something like .5 or 500w as I understand it I changed that and over the course of much experimentation built myself viable diesel electric generators out of sam hall's micro turbine parts.. painted black and inverted they look just like an exhaust pipe on my 44 class you can alter the thrust in the configuration file so they dont produce any but instead dedicate everythng to electricity.. adjust the thermal limit so overstressing them will lead to explosions and all them fun things its the simplest thing to do.. make a backup of any engine your fiddling with or make a copy and just rename it at the top of the configuration file and fiddle with the info bit.. then you'll have 2 of them ive ventured deep into this electrcity generation stuff.. I no longer use batteries for any reason other than to keep headlights lit while stationary.. KSP has a very interesting electricity resource simulation.. as lights will dim.. wheels will go slower etc if your low on charge.. as a bit of inspiration.. ive been able to build a crude yet effective diesel electric system this way, the rovers wheels are mostly stock but modded to require 12 units of power vs 0.5 originally each.. the alternators on the jet turbines output 150 units of power.. and a typical locomotive has 10 wheels currently with the train being unpowered.. with the rover wheels modded to be 1.2 ton each.. and requiring so much power.. I increased the torque.. and use my joystick throttle as rover wheel control.. simply jamming it all the way forward or back the rover wheels wont do anything without power.. so once I start up the engines.. any throttle control relates to the power generation.. slow RPM makes the train creep away slowly. high RPM and she'll have full power it is a bit odd though.. sometimes she wont have power to the front wheels randomly causing drift in one direction.. even under full throttle warcry.. it shows the underpowered tag in the dialog box.. at this point I simply ignite the secondary engine giving the loco around 300 units of power.. she tracks straight. lights burn bright etc but please be aware that there also seems to be some kind of amp simulation thats crude.. but there somehow.. despite having so much power at the ready.. ive had lights dim and go dark on steep hills.. despite having both generators screaming as if somehow they do use more power if climbing a hill.. its a very interesting thing.. but certainly nothing to wait for 1.0 for.. try to make your own by modding stock things.. it wont be long until your happily modding things for your own needs which leads to bigger things I wish you luck EDIT - I did make this for another thread but since im too busy to make a dedicate video.. this shows what I mean I hope Start at 0:50 or so -
When you goto hit the brakes on a train.... and the headlights turn on... Accidently reassigning the brake action to headlights... yes this happened recently
-
...when you seriously thought anyone who said lithobraking ment they crashed into a rock

Locomotive KTP 44 Class mark 3 "4404" is actually 4405.. she returned from a rough run with one middle bogey missing and without a coupler..I didnt have KAS installed and the modified rover wheels are very fiddly to install using even the SPH I couldnt let her be a yard queen.. so I launched another locomotive.. it feels wrong but its all I could do.. still..she had 90km on the clock and lived for 5 days

for me its the feeling when a train returns home to KSC and all the little things that happen after a 60km round trip to a local station winds down.. its usually dark so the end marker runway searchlights appear suddenly and I find without thinking ive lined up the train perfectly in the center of the runway running on a single engine at low rpm generating enough power to keep the headlights lit and maintain coasting speed..I give the throttle a nudge to pull the train over the lip of the runway threshold then shut down the engine once the wagons are clear the chugging of the diesel settles back down to idle then with a grunt and a spark number 1 engine shuts down for the night The trains now coasting under her own weight..headlights dim to half way.. as the train does a perfectly timed slow 90 degree turn off the runway to the taxiway heading to the stabling spot near the stuffed capsule statue Air brakes hiss..the train bunches up slightly then stops Abort button triggers the ladders.. the missions over.. the train stabled for the night til the next run I love KSP

Built a new booster bug for 4404 and finalized her design.. its off to bombo outpost then onwards to the snow regions on weekend if all goes to plan also re-uploaded my video of her shake down and test run a few pages back.. discovering the clear but not astronomically big setting in VLC

RCS thrusters used to be used as emergency braking systems on the first few generations of my locomotives..the single direction type pointing forward.. back in the days where they were mostly passenger based bullet trains rather than present day freight locomotives ive since done away with them when the transition from jet propelled was made to dedicated turbine electric generation for the bogeys as such putting a train into dynamic braking via the reverser and giving engine power reverses the bogeys giving an easier way to manage speed on the sometimes near vertical mountain sides rather than the hairy 60+ ms and sudden braking when the wagons got skittish they still do have thier uses though the rcs tanks modded to hold fuel make great fake air tanks and of course RCS in the traditional way is great for when im launching an outpost station thats big on functions but not so much aerodynanics.. generally firing constantly intune with the SAS to keep a station on course and to prevent...um lithobraking which for me means the sudden stop when you hit kerbin mountaim sides

Its Sam Halls cockpit mod, sadly he seems to not be around anymore.. but it works fine in .90 its a great cockpit.. you double click the center glass for that center view I had in the video http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/66502-Kerbonov-Kn-2-Cockpit-Module its on curse it also comes with some really nice micro turbines.. thats what I use as modified alternators (no thrust, just generate power) on the diesels upside down painted black.. its served me better than any other mod so far.. its a wonderful creation I speak highly of..
-
LITHOBRAKING Allow me to feel a tad stupid and entertained at the same time.. I just looked up the word on wikipedia.. its a real thing.. I actually thought it was a kerbal thing for when you hit the moon too hard and suddenly stopped in a shatter of parts. or when you hit the mountains in KSP... logicly that "litho" meaning rock.. and braking meaning what happens when you crash into something.. eg.. "I lithobraked on the mun" meaning.. no ones coming back.. you hit it and exploded unless of course your Jeb's head.. where braking means simply bouncing half way back upto space powered by cranium force alone
-
Took KTP-44 Mrk 3 on a shakedown cruise following repairs and lighting upgrade - appologies for the quality.. and the moody blues 200km trip next weekend to the new outpost EDIT - fixed quality From 6:27 is the most beautiful sight for a landliner driver like myself.. after a gritty nasty long dangerous trip.. coasting into KSC on dark.. the runway lights always look beautiful and everything feels like home
-
can we have a runway that doesnt explode when something other than a plane bounces on it... but as for overall changes.. id love to see an optional 3rd launch pad.. similar to a helipad.. on flat ground.. some distance away from KSC.. people build more than space planes and rockets.. we should be able to start in the water, or on land away from the KSC I think

I killed Jeb... what's it like carrying on without him?
Overland replied to Apollo91's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Name a ship after him. plant a flag in his honor.. Im not a stranger to loss of kerbals..even in the most innocent circumstances.. just about everythings deadly in KSP In my current game I drove 90km to get him back.. but with history as a guide.. this brave little kerbal never lives long simply because I.. like many people choose him to crew the best vehicles.. be they planes, rockets or trains.. and those things push the boundries until they cant anymore.. hes always the first to go either to dust.. or worse. orbiting kerbol. in a capsule..a station.. or EVA.. without fuel, light.. or hope such is the life of this great pilot -
to continue the almost week long saga in this thread in earlier posts... Landliner Locomotive 44 Class Mark 3 having gone to rescue jeb and his friend from the remains of a crashed train 30km from KSC.. made the round trip with 1 day layover (work) before driving back the 30km to KSC.. only to discover in my haste to fire up the loco and drive her back to the soothing sounds of pink floyd after a hard days work in real life...I actually forgot to pickup jeb and his friend.. returning to KSC with only the original crew... Disheartened I shut down awaiting tonights weekend.. That day has arrived.. and KTP-44 Mk3 never looked so beautiful Xbox steering wheel in combination with a logitech joysticks throttle providing the "reverser" for diesel electric system.. main engine throttle controling the alternators/motor via the gearstick (rover wheels need power.. modded to 1.2 ton each and needing 9 units of power per wheel. increase RPM means increase power .. rover wheels stuck in permanent forward or reverse.. they simply work when power is applied in various amounts.. with speed and torque controlled with the main engines alternator RPM .. a crude yet effective locomotive-like propulsion system) I started up one engine of KTP 44-Mk3.. advanced the throttle mid range drove out of KSC,.. reached the open fields.. fired up engine #2.. gave her full power.. and started on my 30Km journey to the crash site to rescue jeb.. at this point the train has 30km on her clock from the return trip previously.. But this is Kerbal Space Program... something always has to go horribly wrong.. like an episode of topgear.. yet not scripted..it actually happens.. having driven over 20km and remembering the steep grades and challenging terrain that lead to the loss of the first train, with the near loss of the rescue train the night before.. I uncoupled the 2 tanker wagons to run light-engine and pickup jeb.. lowering the risk.. the locos onboard fuel still read in excess of 200 with the mid mounted underside reserve tank holding its own supply this is where things went wrong.. flying through the air while driving at dusk with just one headlight, I misjudged the terrain.. the rear coupler hit the dirt, exploded.. but otherwise safely catapulting the loco back on her feet.. alas..a train without a coupler.... is just an odd shaped rover Soon we arrived at the crash site to pickup jeb the locomotive wounded but still 2 passenger seats and enough fuel to return home... sadly this ment the 2 tankers left behind some distance away now useless due to breaking the coupling.. driving home with darkness set in.. both turbines reverberating between eachother (Detroit diesel sound) we reached a top speed of around 51m/s again regrettably I was driving with only one headlight.. misjudged terrain.. hit the emergency brakes.. heard 2 explosions.. feared the worst as the cab rattled and wobbled.. Happily this trains one tough girl only losing a single left side leading bogey wheel in the middle.. along with the mid mounted reserve fuel tank she pulled into KSC to unload the crew - jeb included with 90km+ on the clock.. battered, wounded.. but proud.. (Jeb on the cab roof) as far as landliner trains go.. this 44 class has been the longest lived so far.. in over 1 and a half years of running land-trains in KSP the 2 abandoned fuel tankers will be fetched by shunting locomotive centrecab KS-2 later tonight
