Happy and a bit... well im not sure if I like it or not.. major problem would be brakes arnt fixed, theres a mod for that I use... but it'd be nice to be stock.. nothing worse than trying to stop a 82 ton 8 car train and having no brakes even at low speed.. my maiden journey around KSC and back into the yard resulted in a locomotive hitting a building and her front bogeys wedged in a staircase.. the issue im not sure of.. they seemed to have fixed docking ports.. in that they dont drift anymore but lock firmly in properly.. previously anything larger than a 4 car train would induce a fatal oscillation in the rear most wagon that'd effect the train at anything above 20+ now im building 8 to 10 car trains that dont drift at all.. with the train tracking the locomotives path perfectly.. its nice.. but I depended a little on the docking port flex and drift.. now the train seems a little rigid.. still turns fine.. but wont bend as much without additional parts I gather it'd be better for spacecraft though.. Radiators look good on the side of locomotives.. so.. dunno how they work in space.. but they look good painted black too so thats a plus for me they dont exactly make a good wheel gaurd though.. as they explode horribly if hit

theres a collection of fixes in a mod that I use, one includes brake fix to bring the brakes back to operation.. I used it in 1.02 so I dont see why it wont work in the current release since the bug is the same.. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/97285-KSP-v1-0-2-Stock-Bug-Fix-Modules-%28Release-v1-0-2e-3-10-Jun-15%29 I dont use any of the others I just deleted them except the brake fix.. lack of brakes (again) is the first thing I noticed when bringing a train out of KSC..

Sure do, 44 Class as in 44xx is generally a bulldog locomotive, americans might call them "A Units" 4409 Represents this class at the moment Long hood road shunters are generally D40xx styled on 40 class RSC3 locomotive class, D4002 being currently the operational and on the roster for mainline operations While shunters in general or branchline freight has taken the 37 class. now upto 3703 - 8 wheeled locomotives with 4 center drive wheels and a docking port (coupler) at both ends for bi-directional operations Aircraft such as the ultralight Scout carry the registration KTP-100xx as this is KSP.. unfortunately class and registration numbers arnt actually representive of how many of that class locomotive exist.. but rather how many have existed.. most of which ended horribly and now are either a pile of parts in a memorial.. or totally vaporised with only their respective numbers carried on
-
Nearing the final testing of D4002 all she needs now is her class number written up in cooltext generator and pasted onto a flag with that Flag Decal mod.. I posted this in the radiator thread but incase anyone missed it.. if you invert the colour on the texture.. they look much better.. good for cow catchers too.. not that theres any cows in space.. I also dont know if they explode horribly or vanish into dust when hit.. so having one on the front of my locomotive might not be a good idea eventually.. we shall see Now that squads added radiators, I ask nicely for pantographs, marker lights.. overhead wiring and track thankyou
-
I dont quite think their useless.. if you invert the texture to black.. they make a great cowcatcher for my longhood road shunter.. and look great on the side of the hood too.. space? nope.. no idea.. but they rock for trains
-
Insert that classic sound of a record being scratched as everything comes to a halt suddenly and unexpectedly due to unforseen events.. in my case.. Radiators!... the temptations simply too great.. I lost my last train due to thermal overload.. ignoring them would be foolish indeed.. but.. alas.. a 44 class doesnt look nice with radiators. .actually quite ugly.. so its back to D400x class.. im working on a road shunter before I get back underway, seen here in prototype stages havent given up.. like alot of us are doing in our respective ways.. updating old missions.. craft etc to include the latest updates it all comes naturally to KSP

Thankyou all Its been a while between updates and for that I apologise.. driving a land train with no time acceleration or autopilot to speak of is a very challenging thing.. as such it requires alot of time, something ive been short of recently Thankfully though as much as it does seem ive put things on the backburner.. the opposite has been true.. Ive been wrestling with the ideas above and many others.. should I fly a train to last known position or continue the tradition of taking things the hardway and.. starting again.. the decision has been a tough one.. As real life would have it.. last weekend was Rail Heritage day at central station sydney.. it reminded me of my own obligations with the elcano challenge and that to my train of which im ever so proud always... irrespective of them all seemingly going to the big railyard in the sky one way or another over the past few months.. the journeys always been memorable and something dear to me.. so with that all in mind 4409 now carries the flag of the Kerbal Train Program Elcano Challenge 4409 herself , redesigned partly on new and old ideas.. more leaning towards 4408s couplings but a more compact locomotive without the science module Real life inspirations came rather suddenly in an entertaining way.. While on the way to work last week.. regretably while rail heritage day was fully underway.. I paused for a moment to see just what was at the end of a preserved electric train, some diner cars, sleeper cars and suchlike as luck would have it and a touch of irony.. it turned out to be a 44 class, specificly 4490.. its quite odd how KSP bleeds into everything somehow in peoples lives, be it knowing a science fiction movies orbital dymamics are off.. able to pick apart a rockets practicality for those who undertake interplanetary flight in KSP.. or in my case.. the momentary smile that seeing 4490 brought.. hoping dearly that by the time I finish the Elcano challenge.. like 4404, 4405, 4407 & 4408 Mk1 and Mk2 respectively.. the trail of lost and rebuilt trains dont exceed anything beyond the low 20s.. While the real 44 class now near me on the platform is 4490 being formerly 90 in her class.. my 44 class get numbered going by just how many their have been.. most of which met a horrible end.. their class numbers not so much a registration in number... but more a kill counter on a bomber, Happily though it did give some very nice ideas.. along with 4001 behind her, an RSC3 of which my former D4001 was styled as documented previously in this thread.. was a generator car.. a passenger-type car equipt with diesel generators for the trains needs.. having lost 4408 II in a catastrophic failure of generator turbines leaving the train nothing more than a runaway ending in its own demise.. the idea stuck as one that could have practical use.. auxiliary generators that could remain inactive and fired up if ever the locomotive suffered a twin engine failure.. preserving the motive power, dynamic brake (reverse) and hopefully spare the train from a fate not unlike her sister.. or....sisters that now approach 10 in number I set about adapting this idea to 4409.. as such shes now redesigned and ready for the road.. building on the experience, loss.. and honour of those before her.. 4409 is ready for the road hopefully underway by weekend

only those to successfully go into space and return having seen kerbin as a blue marble are granted citizenship thus the right to breed thus meaning widely distributed regional names mean little saddly the hopefuls who see kerbin more as a rushing green blob growing bigger by the second.. dont exactly get to be parents..but..it matters not..thier only dust in the wind

ModuleAlternator vs ElectricCharge
Overland replied to Fengist's topic in KSP1 Modelling and Texturing Discussion
Greetings Fengist, While im still in the initial stages of modding outright myself.. the configuration files I dabble with to construct my train diesel electric system are modified jet engines to a point, they have 24 units of battery to run lights when stationary in an emergency.. the only difference I can see between the two is the order, perhaps it makes a difference? Taken from 4409s generator turbines for 10 wheel drive transmission -
DevNotes: "something rather brilliant from RoverDude"
Overland replied to AbacusWizard's topic in KSP1 Discussion
green light? Stock land trains stock diesel electric transmission? KsC2 turns into KTC Terminal with engine sheds, fuel tanks and ore processing for ore trains optional guiderails and overhead with context menu clickable pointwork? /hope -
Question: Whats the stall speed of a locomotive?.. So I spent the day playing around with them ultralight Regallo wing type aircraft.. Discovering the wonderful floaty calm relaxing flight of a aerosport powered skytrike.. One might say I got carried away with it.. forgetting ive got a challenge to continoue.. a torch to carry lest not the memory of achievements of those who have fallen be forgotten.. Not all was lost however. the time spent evidently came fruitful for a greater purpose In the research of the day playing with all things aircraft it was found that these airliner wings have strange qualities.. Filled with fuel their extremely heavy yet have pretty good lift capacity.. Empty.. they float almost forever bringing to life the fore-mentioned ultralight that I admit ive been rather proud of.. even so much as making repeated trips to the wreck of 4408 II and scouting out outlying terrain for future use in the past ive experimented with air-lifting a train.. sadly the mods ive created all are far too heavy for even the most capable craft.. with wheel in excess of 1 ton each.. generators.. heavy laden with fuel.. the best I could do was get one airborne with electro-hovercraft pads using the locomotives electricity generated from the turbines.. an adventure that never quite ended as hoped for anyone involved Today.. that changed A plan was hatched.. also in a strange quirk of fate.. it would seem a 44 class landtrain makes a very nice taildragger using the experience gained from the ultralight craft I built.. 4409 herself via the use of docking ports and decouplers.. all designed to be removable... Became one with the sky, leaving the surface of kerbin.. yet this time on purpose and with great fanfare After what seemed like an eternity flying.. one of those moments where time seemed to stand still.. it was decided to undertake experimental landing operations - having forgotten to install any type of parachute or failsafe No deploying of parachutes here.. incidently I was to discover just what is the stall speed on of a heavy locomotive running on a radial propeller engine rigged up to a pair of airliner wings.. (why doesnt that feel odd?....) It would seem safe landing speed appeared to be in the high 70s - with 4409 bouncing on landing.. the wing flexed... having never been in this situation before I didnt know what to expect.. once 4409s locomotive wheels with industrial strength traction and braking power settled onto the dirt, everything came to a sudden yet safe stop.. ending the first successful maiden takeoff and landing operations with a train - a milestone what never before has been achieved with such grace decouplers were fired, radial engine was undocked from the light recess on the nose which incidently is a painted small docking port.. the engine exploding as it hit the ground Now back on the ground - the native environment for a land train as logic would have it.. Generator 1 was fired up to aid her in shaking off all that nasty aircraft stuff Thus ends the tale of the flying locomotive - a new delivery method to ensure that the legacy of former 4408 II and her crew lives on.. a train will be ferried out to the last position of 4408 II during the week.. likely in sections and coupled manually Industrial locomotive 3701 once queued up to be the replacement locomotive that would carry on to KSC to meet another train now doesnt have to undertake the risk and instead remains parked at KSC in the carpark where she was last driven Finally.. here have 4409 - All aircraft parts shaken off.. all that shows that she once flew is a few scars from strut supports.. other than that.. shes a mint condition locomotive - seen here with both generators fired up and class identification lights lit.. shes ready for the mainline to carry on the grand tradition.. 44 Class Landtrain of the Elcano Challenge

The smaller skytrike LR Scout is now released (Smaller craft in the screenshots above) http://kerbalx.com/Overland/LR-Wetwing-Ultralight Shes a wet-wing delta skytrike with quite a long range.. ample stable flight charicteristics and while she shares some similar aspect to her bigger sister they're completely different craft in terms of how they fly - the only thing they share is not needing to use SAS.. if anything a tiny bit of trim and she settles in a perfectly stable cruise Please dont try to take off at anything below 20ms though she will.. then.. wont.. as stall sets in.. .difficult to recover from.. while shes equipt with parachutes for emergencies their little more than explosion prevention.. typicly the craft will fall to bits on impact leaving just the kerbal surviving.. Again any feedback welcome (As long as you actually tried it) TRIM = (ALT W or S a few times for windows - RIGHT SHIFT + A or S for linux) Like her bigger sister she uses Sam Halls Kn2 Cockpit & KAS.. both 1.02 compatable and floating around on the forums, kerbalstuff or curse respectively
-
Strange how everything seems to all come back to KSP indirectly.. The inspiration for these craft were of course Aerotrikes but also Rogallo wing craft.. Wikipedia tells me the original concept for the Rogallo wing was invented by a nasa engineer and considered for use with the apollo and mercury programs.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_Paresev

Ive constructed a longer range sisterplane based on the delta wing design.. this one though has wet wings and a much longer range.. although they handle similar.. some manuvers between aircraft just arnt compatable.. the larger original craft is much lighter and will stall-loop happily with the absolute minimum of altitude safely.. float down to any landing and generally be a joy to fly Her new long range scout sisterplane is smaller, has similar speed and lands quite nicely.. though an ascent taken too quickly on takeoff will generally cause her to flat-stall and ascend with little or much control.. for this shes equipt with emergency chutes that calmly settle the craft back on the ground with minimal damage (ABORT - BACKSPACE) I'll upload the craft once ive finished tweaking it the alternate design is also a forward trike vs the reverse wheelbase of the original.. better ground handling at higher speeds.. best suited to get places rather than survey the terrain as the craft floats overhead.. 2 similar craft for 2 different roles KTP1001A & KTP1002A identification plates not included unfortunately - made with Flag Decal mod (oddly heavy, put one on each side) and a quick 5 minute texture in gimp
-
The flag is a custom alpha texture that I overwrote one of the ugly stock flags with.. so that all that show are the numbers themselves and no background.. happily when planting a flag externally KSP automaticly puts a white background the mod im using is called flag decals http://www.curse.com/ksp-mods/kerbal/222813-flag-decals-v2-3 it lets you place the mission flag in an assortment of ways on craft using its own 3d modeled paper thin part.. more like a sticker.. they come in curved, straight.. large, small etc.. a very useful mod to have the painted rover wheels are a seperate custom mod from the stock ones I created.. but you can just as simply repaint the existing stock ones, I used GIMP on linux with the DDS plugin to invert the colour, change to black.. enhance it a little.. and in the case of the locomotive drive wheels on the center 4 of 3701 I highlighted a few sections and turned their respective colours white.. the effect is rather nice.. Just make sure you save with the DX whatever it is 1 compression when saving.. Kerbpaint, never heard of it but I think i'll have to look into it, thanks I might be using linux now but I used windows before. the procedure is the same with no difference.. have fun

Quite the opposite my good friend everytime ive flown that plane in the past ive landed in a similar way.. the plane fell to bits and the kerbal was able to get out of the cockpit fine.. (standing on the engine nacelle in the wreck) I only actually found the bug after trying to dismount the aircraft on the runway ... that stock inline cockpit must have a massive bounding box on the 3d model.. if anythings remotely over the top its classified as obstructed anyway the ultralight I replaced it with suits me much better.. although I admit she only goes a few m/s faster than a train flat out.. the only real benefit is theres no mountains in the sky.. unless the skys a tad low

Kerbin Circumnavigation 1.0.2 - Aviator Challenge
Overland replied to Fengist's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Hmm, while everythings on hold pending 3701's dispatch and bringing her upto speed on the ground based circumnavigation I was fortunate enough to discover the airliner wings float like a butterfly when empty in an ultralight configuration.. sadly it uses the same Sam-Hall Kn2 cockpit the trains do and KAX for the rear propeller they do nothing to change the aerodynamics though.. would it be acceptable? top speed is a little over 70 m/s craft file if needed to look at it in person to verify - http://kerbalx.com/Overland/Ultralight-Trike She also has a longer range yet smaller sistercraft using the same set of mods but smaller stock delta wings.. able to fly with 300 units of fuel filling the wings unlike her larger sistercraft above -
[Showcase] Showoff Your Rep-Worthy Crafts
Overland replied to Redrobin's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Although theres been many after her.. the original 44 Class number 08.. the first train to depart on the endeavour that is the elcano challenge circumnavigation of kerbin by ground.... (Video title wrong.. class number on the side of the loco is 4408) 4408 seen here departing the wreck of a fallen sister.. Former 4404 Ive never felt quite the same about a train since her loss.. classmates 4409, 4408 Mk2, D4001 all have lived eventful lives.. fulfilling their design and purpose well before a sadly firey and unwelcome demise.. the latest loss being 4408 Mk2.. Still with all that said.. 4408 herself remains the benchmark in so many ways video taken quite a way into her journey on some flat land in a tranquil yet lonely moment -
[X-Wing Series] Cygnus XG-1 Starwing Assault Gunboat
Overland replied to pheeph's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Yes but .. this one actually flys.. Say we slap Twin Ion Engines on the back of a TIE fighter as per prototypical specifications... it'll be a long long time before anyone gets anywhere.. perhaps end of the runway.. not so much a galaxy far far away.. it'll still be far far away for the rest of eternity no? -
[X-Wing Series] Cygnus XG-1 Starwing Assault Gunboat
Overland replied to pheeph's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Love it although my encounter with the craft was as a pilot in TIE-Fighter.. good days.. still good to this day if you can fire it up on dosbox.. how I wish games were still that good.. atleast we have KSP -
hmmm.. I did have a tiny yard-flea shunter in an earlier save.. but 3701 being an industrial type branch line locomotive would qualify.. shes much smaller than any mainline train.. as are her wagons still doesnt quite fit in a car space though
-
Apologies - I forgot to fix up the rear wheel which was too far back - Ive re-uploaded.. she now lifts off at around 35 without the wheelbase being too long preventing initial positive climb Yep!.. shes an ultralight in the grand traditions of KSP might be made of airliner wings.. but flies better than a dead duck.. this makes me proud
-
I did write a long detailed post about this but the forum logged me out when it exceeded the time.. I'll simply provide the download link and honestly state.. shes a very docile very well behaved craft with gentle stall characteristics suited for casual flight & scouting missions Also keyboard friendly Uses KAX for the propellor engine at rear & Sam Halls Kn-2 cockpit.. all of which are 1.02 compatable EDIT - Ive Reuploaded to compensate for the rear wheel being too far back.. the longer wheelbase was preventing takeoff at 35m/s.. Reuploaded and tested.. Landing works fine as long as you make sure your hitting the ground at or below takeoff speed.. the narrow wheelbase bounces a little but she'll settle down nicely Takeoff speed is around 35ms but she'll float happily below that once airborne Stalls are nothing to be afraid of.. especially going vertical.. as once she slips in reverse.. control has already been restablished and will glide happily in any direction to regain course and speed Id love to hear any feedback positive and negative DOWNLOAD LINK @ KerbalX: http://kerbalx.com/Overland/Ultralight-Trike

Do you have a screenshot that makes you laugh every time?
Overland replied to Randazzo's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Nothing special.. but this... it tore the heart out of any sense of place I had at the time. shattering the realism barrier.. causing me to laugh and feel digusted all at the same time.. she was promptly ejected from the locomotive as a sacrifice to the kraken -
I wish you well and good fortunes in your first person roving.. its indeed something special.. sometimes while we're flying over the terrain the subtle artwork in the terrain mastered by squad and crew are lost to the blur of speed and distance.. having been a full time train driver for over a year..I know exactly what you mean.. being up close and personal with the terrain is an entirely difference experience to simply using the external view.. in this context 10m/s seems a tad too fast.. extreme terrain changes also become scary and rightly so.. you dont quite appreciate the ground when its rushing up to meet you with balls of flame and death when flying an aircraft or spaceship
