Plane parts: Do you use them and what for?
Overland replied to Bloody_looser's topic in KSP1 Discussion
what about people who use plane and rocket parts to build long range land vehicals? I love aircraft..rockets not so much..trains more so.. it seems the later are gaining traction in KSP... perhaps youll need to make another angry poll soon about no more train parts? I came for the rockets and engineering in KSP I stay for the planes and trains.. I dont quite inspect trees but they get an angry horn blast if one gets in the way.. -
Come hear about KSP 1.1, straight from Squad!
Overland replied to Streetwind's topic in KSP1 Discussion
yay! that mark 1 cockpit looks really sweet for a passenger diesel railcar along with the mark1 pods for passenger cars!.. ok.. i'll go back under my rock now -
I'm running 2GB ECC RAM on an aging core2duo 3.0ghz former WX4600 HP Workstation.. Using a GTX260 card that somehow runs flawlessly.. Never upgraded the ram because its a specific type it needs.. hard to come by.. easier to just buy another PC soon I used to use windows.. the 2gb ram would make it crash if I didnt delete the ugly mark3 stuff I never used.. Since switching to linux. first ubuntu then linux mint now ElementryOS distribution.. everything runs beautifully.. I have 7 mods running including my own diesel electric engines with custom sounds.. happily using both a joystick and an xbox steering wheel

I dont get the hate really I mean its foundations.. "Exclusive" titles were a pretty bad way to forcibly make people who wanted to play certain games loyal to that platform.... Ive oftern thought about the good old days when most games were on every platform back in the 80s.. these were games that became well known and stood the test of time. Elite, Defender.. etc The majority of "haters" for each platform for the most part I think lies with the age of the commenter, due to being young having the inability to buy there own systems .. eg.. stuck with whatever system their parents brought.. while more mature age games alot of the times have both or quite a nice selection.. Theres no threat to KSP with porting over to consoles, especially in this generation of hardware.. as the consoles are just PCs in their own way only simplified in terms of hardware.. so thus.. easier to code for.. the flagship version will keep being PC.. im a former windows user that out of need started using linux.. KSP runs wonderfully on that.. and my rig is way under specifications (2gb ram and no loading crashes while having mods installed..unlike windows) im quite happy I didnt have to deal with windows 7 etc .. choice is good.. im sure the linux version got the same hate from windows users screaming murder that it'll harm their version too.. windows is still quite buggy but .. the change to unity 5 benefits windows and console.. the later being a nice reason to persue change that benefits all Multiple platforms is a good thing.. it gives people choice.. helps broaden the appeal.. and most of all.. exposure of the game to a wider audience.. great stuff for squad. great for us.. no reason for hate im happy they're branching out there will always be wars over different ideas.. some dont need to be though

Did another 40km with 4004 and her crew including a 20km jaunt driving short hood first which oddly let her stay at 40m/s without damage.. we're nearing the site where 4008 was lost in a system format.. the beautiful snow capped mountain.. approaching 150+km now soon to be making her own route rather than following that of her lost sistertrains..

WARNING - THE FOLLOWING CONTAINS TRACES OF TRAINS - AVOID IF ALLERGIC (sorry its the best way to explain docking ports on land..) [TRAINS] I deal with docking ports on the land alot. actually never in space.. im a train driver not a rocket pilot generally.. so im constantly shunting trains using docking ports..have been over a year so I got the fair level of experience even on rough terrain.. The solution I use for trains.. be it locomotives, wagons and suchlike to maintain height.. I use a standard bogey set.. in the subassembly of SPH.. eg everything has the same 3 truss and wheel sets then attached to that whatever its going to be.. then I modify the wheels accordingly for what its use is.. example. 40 class with booster and wagons & 44 class constructed by same system What you should do likewise is construct a base with landing legs of locked suspension height like suggested earlier.. then copy that into subassemblies.. then base everything off that or put that under everything.. so the height is the atleast touching the ground wise.. it works for my trains.. not all that different to what your trying to do a pointer I can give though since 1.0+ upgrade is docking ports are rigid as hell for no good reason.. I used to be able to have a train with docking ports straight onto the wagons turn effortlessly.. but these new things its like trying to turn a metal bar.. Eg.. no spaces between the docking ports = bad idea.. for a train and your base too if your worried about your base flexing when you connect and you actually WANT it to absorb some movement.. put a truss between the docking ports and the vehicle/building/tank.. look at my above train with no spaces vs the earlier screenshots.. putting a truss mounted onto something.. then a docking port on that gives alot of flex.. very useful they let the trains turn almost 90 degrees without harm...bob with the terrain and generally act like couplings.. not hard docking ports... so your base should be able to flex and not take everything else with it TRUSS - DOCKING PORT-DOCKING PORT-TRUSS take note at 1 minute as 4003 turns the corner out of the yard, thats what I mean they'll still transfer fuel and power.. thats how my trains run.. the wagons are fuel.. if it didnt. they wouldnt get far Also!.. I see your using that docking port junior in the first screenshot.. dont its a nasty little thing.. quite fussy and worst of all. when its hit by anything it actually slides away from the part, also coming away with weight or in my case torque of the locomotive's acceleration or braking.. it always springs back and creates a terrible energy filled spring force.. use the standard sized docking ports.. they seem to lock easier.. their much stronger and they dont float around their own neighbouring part if hit.. they stay in 1 spot.. I use them for trains all the time now.. I used the smaller ones for a few months in the early landliner class locos.. im glad I made the change [/TRAINS]

The flag for the rescue train..

shunting a heavy train.. around KSC.. with building destruction enabled and actually have some of KSC left around the yard by the time the trains ready runaway wagons become slow speed terminal missiles for just about every important building around the carpark.. the sheer mass of a 4 wagon train running at 5m/s with no brakes (thanks squad...) a little tap and its all over
-
I'll do an animation about this one day.. but it follows the actual development of land-trains in KSP for me.. they're the most dangerous horrible machines on kerbin.. dwarfing rockets, space planes.. even purpose built bombs for sheer lethality... having 100s of kerbals met their fate onboard a train before I started numbering them.. A KTP driver is a brave soul indeed... a true pioneer.. but their family is devistated by the annoucement when they said they got a job.. up goes thought clouds of a proud astronaught.. even exploding in glory brings a smile on loved ones faces to think about.. but its all brought back to reality when outside KSC.. in the carpark sits a 44 class locomotive and her train.. Instantly the family of the KTP driver erupts in emotion.. female kerbals faint or cry hysteticly.. male kerbals themselves qualified rocket pilots proudly flying tin cans each day lower their head in respectful sorrow.. Jeb.. he just became a train driver.. there is no hope Excuse the screenshots.. they serve a purpose to reinforce the above.. Early 2014 - Original Class of Landliners - Jet Propelled Train 1001 meets her fate.. Train 1003 takes on memorial duty Mid 2014 - Electric/Battery Recharge Passenger set.. un numbered train takes up memorial duty on her first day of her fallen sister train Present day - Diesel Monoprop/Electric Locomotive 4004 sets off to resume the elcano challenge.. passing through the wreck of Locomotive 4003 My canon is bloody horrible and depressing... each accident forming a story in official KTP canon.. where the extremely lucky ones survive.. the everyday normal thing is.. no one does.. Sad..

Yes ive had it.. and out of all bugs and misguided features ive seen poured into KSP over the last 2 years.. (including M1 rover wheels losing brakes now for the last few updates.. MOON rover wheels everyone uses...) Im sorry squad and the dedicated developers that brought us this wonderful simulation... but this time I shall have to say... the new heat feature is.. S I L L Y! Dont get me wrong, I love things overheating realisticly.. theres nothing better for me than having a locomotive working hard with her generators screaming running at 100% with the wheels slipping trying to tackle a steep grade.. just as a slowly overheating engine brings realism to the elcano challenge and train operations I undertake.. without it.. it'd be one less.. "living" factor I would miss.. but having this radiated heat that seems to go crazy on parts it shouldnt.. even on stock stuff.. its just wrong.. especially for a 1.0+ game.. im sure in time it'll be a wonderful feature once its tweaked but it needs more time to bake.. no pun intended.. Batteries exploding. trusses going into melt down.. things exploding into dust randomly after a save is loaded and even normal use.. silly.. it makes me quite sad because at first I enjoyed it.. until it got embarrassing.. As someone whos undertaking the elcano challenge with a train I very much love.. seeing her entire front hood glowing like a heating element from 2 jet engines turned into detriot engined genset that have served me well for over a year flawlessly.. its.. very sad.. to see the state of KSP like it is as a whole not only my craft in unwarranted thermal distress her front wheels and pretty much every part forward of the cab glowing with heat slowly climbing for no good reason... including while shutdown as if someone had taken an oxy torch to the hood while standing shut down in the cold darkness of a save file.. its just plain wrong.. I dearly hope its fixed.. for me.. I do ground things.. I rarely leave kerbin. .distance still means alot to me.. and a train isolated 100s of km's on a run is still as alone as a space craft on the edges of the solar system.. both could so easily meet an untimely end not so much due to pilot or operator error.. but due to this insane heat modeling.. as someone whos had KSP since 0.20 its disheartening.. im not usually one to take a stand in this way.. im thankful for KSP and all the joy its brought.. sadly.. someone has to speak up

The elcano challenge is not just a challenge in KSP operations, its also a mental and emotional challenge.. see my elcano challenge log for details.. but all simplified you need 2 things above all else.. Dedication and resolve but more importantly.. love and care for your craft and her crew.. it might seem strange at first but once you feel it.. the former mentioned dedication comes naturally. theres a reason ive payed respects to any fallen train and her crew when they meet an untimely end..its not just fiction and a story to fill the time its actually quite real from my point of view.. the connection is very enjoyable and quite unique 44 class 4408 started life passing through a wreck of former sistertrain 4404.. 40 class 4004 followed that sad tradition.. both trains have collectively 250km between them.. it helps greatly

Is anyone else experiencing Too-Much-KSP-Syndrome?
Overland replied to Noname117's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I can definately relate.. but.. like everyone's saying.. its a cycle.. I shall tell a story I brought KSP after looking at it pre .20 days with a computer far too old to run it since my last one went bang in a wind related power surge some years before.. I never renewed the PC because.. all games just seemed to be.. meh recently.. im a big follower of the indie scene but besides from City Car Driver.. nothing really appealed to me or made me think wow.. I have to get a PC for this.. One day I brought a PC on a whim.. an old ex rental Core2Duo WX4600 HP workstation... I tried KSP demo but found its existing graphics card wouldnt handle it.. out of curiosity and nothing to lose .. PC cost 90.. I plugged the only remaining component from my former PC into this one.. an nvidia GTX260.. oddly enough. it ran. and ran well.. and so did KSP demo.. around 0.23 I purchased KSP on steam.. played with it for a while.. blew up things but.. hmm space flight. I love it... but. i HATE with a passion using time acceleration for anything.. it makes things feel so . fake and disconnected.. I had the same problem with Frontier Elite 2.. loved taking off planets.. annoying police and other ships.. hated playing the game due to time acceleration requirements.. I dabbled with KSP for a while on and off but.. generally left it alone.. put it in one of them.. good but .. meh.. categories of games of which I seem to have a few.. a few months later I brought a joystick and while the flight model was questionable.. started to love KSP again.. ignoring space entirely but loving aircraft.. I happened to lose a plane around 40km from KSC.. but the terrain made everything that tried to land there to rescue jeb just crash the same horribly.. I needed a way to rescue the pilot.. I built a rover.. then wondered what would happen if I used docking ports to make a trailer... An earth shattering click happened.. I love trains... the trailer grew to a train and the rover grew to a locomotive.. THEN started the cycle 1... KSP trains.... wake up on weekend.. TRAINS.. spend half a day tweaking one rather than actually driving... sun goes down outside without notice.. work tomorrow.. 2. next weekend(s) same happens.. start to wonder if this is healthy.. goto play KSP for 10 minutes end up building a battery electric shunter for the growing ecosystem of jet propelled locomotives that now scatter outside KSC in bits and on the taxiways now becoming a railyard.. 3. a few months go by.. things get a bit stale and this plane that started it all is no closer from being rescued.. 100s of kerbals die in the course of train driving.. the plane is forgotten about... things start to get less interesting.. 4. I wonder if I can do x, and if I do x.. will y happen... oh.. it does.. ok then.. i'll mod y to do z and then... ohhhhhhhhhhhhh... so it does work.. I like this modding stuff.. 5.. next few weeks dedicated to not actually playing KSP but testing mods and modifications of existing parts to achieve an outcome.. the diesel electric land train.. 6.. swear that I wont ever open KSP again and i'll actually enjoy weekends after the work week... to hell with KSP.. its a mysterious time-space void.. 7.. spend weeks driving trains with the goal of circumnavigating kerbin... revitalising train development.. giving a purpose to train operations and modding requirements 8: goto line 1.. if no line 1.. goto line 6, 7 then 8.. Run program... It never ends...your trapped..dont try to fight it..it'll only get worse -
Thats a very detailed, emotional and well thought out read my good friend Appologies for not having the time to reply before now.. Managing a land train and even losing one.. battling the kraken and suchlike can all take is toll horribly on other tasks.. ones even as important as this.. Finally able to once again sit down and reply.. im glad I did.. You present a world of your own making with upmost detail and clarity.. You shouldnt worry so much about not posting pictures directly to the post..as if anyone is like myself.. reading your journel of the adventure presents its own pictures in the imagination.. The actual included pictures in the imgur links provide reinforcement to seal the world in its own way.. its a very nice experience. Thankyou The elcano challenge isnt for the faint hearted or those wanting a new badge in their signature in a matter of minutes or hours.. this is entirely different.. like ive said before.. people who undertake it are of a dedicated caste of people.. writing history as we progress in KSP canon but also show what can be done within KSP as a program.. simulation.. and a game where many have failed before it.. You do very well in that respect.. upholding the tradition greatly.. Having chosen kerbin rather than the smaller planets.. you join the ranks of few to undertake the challenge.. and my dearest hope... like with myself and land trains.. your rover and her crew will be ones to finish the challenge.. leaving a trail of stories and achievements in her wake.. I wish you the very best in your adventure.. your rover is a fine capable machine.. almost train-like with her double ended cabs Also regarding the KIS/KAS container on your flipped machine.. if you empty it.. you might have a better chance of righting your rover back on her wheels.. I discovered this while carrying the cement block base in the packs of each kerbal's inventory.. they couldnt jump.. the issue was weight.. a simple thing in the realworld but something we oftern forget is actually simulated in KSP and the mods we use Looking forward to the next installment.. dont lose hope if the replies are low.. many are.. your efforts are never in vein and irrespective of whether its seen by your own eyes only or a thousand others... its an experience in its own to be proud of

Weekend Update - 113km Driven - 1/4 Way to North Pole (Trialing an atmospheric scatter mod.. hence the blue in the distance.. its not perfect though)As the weekend draws to a close, Ive just finished 4004's final drive for the night.. an impressive 101km from 4003s last position.. 12km from KSC roughly (no flag at KSC) I'll install a flag at KSC tomorrow and let 4003s wreck rest in peace rather than be used as a navigation point 4004s undertaken 5 drives from saturday morning till sunday night Still open land with smooth flowing curves.. nothing too extreme if course is corrected.. currently driving around a small mountain range the long way.. speeds staying nicely around 30m/s with near idle.. when we approach inclines once the speed drops to sub 25m/s engine #2 is restarted and 4004s twin detrioit engines generate and pump 115 units of monoprop transmission medium into the wheelsets of the locomotive.. All up.. absolutely enjoyable.. 100% realtime and a pleasure to experience.. Thankyou to everyone that commented previously too.. youve been an inspiration when things are going good.. and helped keep the spirit alive when things weren't going so well I'll update through the week with hourly drives after work - I travel 2.45 hours by train from work.. so its off the train with rails and onto landtrains when I get home.. I love it many wouldnt.. but I do

[Elcano Challenge] Voyage of the Silverfish: Silverfish IV
Overland replied to Starwhip's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Goodluck Elcano Warrior by the way.. nothing glows horribly on your silverfish craft? -
Hmm.. that does look impressive I look forward to it.. thanks for the rep by the way too I gather you cant collide with them no? they make me nervous I tend to change course JUST incase.. after an angry blast of the horn.. as far as I know they dont have any physical properties so rather harmless. but they worry me.. closest ive ever been to hiting one is when 4004 managed to slip though 2 of them side by side They do look beautiful. if a tad..big but I get that. their ment to be seen from high altitude when entering the atmosphere not scurried under by a train or porcupine class roverjet in your case

Dont forget to put the "cab" in the tender if shes going to fly

Some further progress to finish off the morning that turned afternoon.. 17.5km to make around 89.5km from the wreck of 4003.. Getting close to 100km from KSC now.. the terrains taking on a familiar tranquility.. made more beautiful by the terrain scattered trees at a harmless 100% graphics setting Mostly smooth terrain.. the job for the driver in this section of terrain is simply to monitor speed.. shutdown one engine.. have the other near idle and watch the terrain roll by.. All realtime.. I wouldnt use time acceleration for any reason.. nor have I ever.. All this would be missed.. some things.. are worth taking time to appreciate A long way to go.. 4004s dwarfed by the seemingly endless mass of green.. distance isnt a problem.. times like this make it all worth it 4003's Wreck was the first major flag to be planted (that wasnt ran over accidently) sitting 12km from KSC Finally at 89.5km away from 4003s last position, 100km from KSC or so.. we shutdown for the day.. The hood again starting to glow.. but not as much as before

Thankyou everyone for the recomendations and advise, it was very helpful in diagnosing the problem and slaying this breed of kraken.. it would seem trains naturally tempt him more than most vehicles but.. Thankfully.. this one turned out less to be a random kraken.. This breed was baited by operator error the "Driver randomly editing configuration files for better performance" kraken "EmissiveConstant" A value I figured would be good higher than usual along with everything else in the generators when I was re-modding them for better performance prior to 4003s launch.. I put the value to 1.7.. it was 0.6 default.. From my research ive now done it seems that this is actually the value that governs the radius of radiated heat from the engine.. 4003 in the past suffered from the same.. her wheels would glow at the front and other things would heat up horribly but not to the point of 4004s issues.. what saved her was having 6 radiators as part of the design.. where 4004 only has 2 between the wheels under the cab.. Essentially what was happening.. it was as though the entire front of the locomotive where the engines were... was being microwaved or grilled over a coal BBQ.. which eventually included her wheels and just about everything forward from the cab.. Hence locomotive-au-glowstick.. I went into the configuration files.. edited 1.7 to 0.6 (default) Once daytime came around.. I was greeted with something beautiful The ink-black nothingness where a tree would appear at random.. get an annoyed horn blast then disappear.. turned into a beautiful forest in the light of kerbol.. (Although the wisdom of blasting airhorns at trees is somewhat questionable) Everything seemed to be normal once again.. 4004 gave up her dreams of featuring in a rave as a diesel-electric giant glowstick.. sudden explosions and death now became a lesser threat from immediate.. to possible future normality It would seem.. atleast for now 4004 is safe to resume her journey

I just got in another 20km before bed.. 4004s on the terrain now that 4008 was on during the tranquility and isolation videos posted early on in this thread.. The mountain 4004 and D4001 visited is also on the horizon to the right but im deciding if its worth the detour For now, Kerbol sank below the horizon.. the sky changed to pretty colours then to stars.. 4004s lights seem to be working well.. although I turned on the rear shunting light so I could observe the wagons easier.. so far though its just a nice peaceful drive.. engines are at 3/4.. speeds around 28ms I stopped for the night when things got too dark.. 23km on the clock Although the hood keeps glowing.. no resolve on that yet

I hope so but I think the kraken has other ideas.. I may have offended it by slaying its brother.. the instant random destruction on terrain kraken a few days ago.. it snacked on rover wheels that were deleted.. the problem I found was the save file had somehow made the wheels both motor enabled, disabled.. and steering on and off at the same time.. KSP didnt like that when going over boundries of terrain..
