Stabilizing SSTO spaceplanes during reentry.
nhnifong replied to Specula's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
While in the SPH, you can temporarily drain all the fuel in your tanks to check that the COL will still be behind the COM even when empty. Jus right click the tanks and drag the fuel level down. Don't forget to drag it back up before final flight! -
Could you copy the brain to a computer?
nhnifong replied to gmpd2000's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I read an interesting point regarding this today. For some background, I have always thought that we could eventually transfer the brain to a computer, but this changed my mind. Neural tissue stores information with a relatively sparse code (as opposed to a dense or holographic code), meaning that at any time relatively few neurons are active, and any given neuron is sensitive to a very specific stimuli. This is consistent with the evolutionary constraint of maximising information transmission per neural spike. The spareseness intensifies as you go "up" the heirarchy of the cortex towards more abstract representations and sensory integration areas. This has a very serious consequeunce which I had thusfar overlooked. When you consider a single neuron in high-level cortex, it is extremely difficult to find the stimuli that activates it. You might have to spend hours looking at pictures of random things to determine what that neuron stands for. In order to copy a brain to a computer, it would be necessary at least to learn which stimuli every neuron is sensitive to. The time needed to do this is simply far greater than a human lifetime. -
I tried my first game on hard. Everyone was killed by a tornado before they had a chance to build anything >_<

Go for a gatherer's hut in the woods first. Don't build too many roads early on. get four houses down and then leave it that way at least one year.
-
I've always played it outside of steam, but If I had to guess, I'd say about 2 days a week for the past two years, and when I play I tend to play for about 5 hours. So that about 1000 hours.

Welp, I just spent way too long playing that! My city has gone through some disasters, but it recovered and right now it's at about 300 people and growing faster than ever

There are still plenty of applications of tethered exoskeletons. DARPA has been advancing the science for about 5 or 10 years now. The are used on some ships to help people carry more stuff, and for who knows what else.

Yeah me too Hey amps you wanna do some kind of twitch live stream first-play thing with me tomorrow? Of course... who on earth is going to watch it when they could be playing banished...

I've always thought maybe it wouldn't be too crazy to genetically engineer the hair follicles to send roots down into the cortex, and then use them as sensors. The might have a conductive electrolytic core that could pick up fine signals and carry them to electronics outside the skull. These are low-intensity lasers.

I've been waiting on this game for months... Just one day left!

How does lift effect delta-v?

And another person converts to FAR.... -
I'll play with it I aint afraid a nuffin! But really, a virtual experience as immersive as Sword Art Online or Accel World is a long long way off... Food for thought, when some of the first home applications of electricity were invented, like toasters, people said "I'm not bringing something into my home that could electrocute and kill me!"

Name KSP's currency (or at least suggest it)!
nhnifong replied to SkyHook's topic in KSP1 Discussion
The gameplay might be more interesting if it just gave you like 20 of a given part when you discover it and then you earn certain combinations of parts from contracts, and you can recover any part. Maybe you could trade parts to other players on an open market once multiplayer is ready. But still, keeping it all barter-based and not having any official currency would be interesting. The most useful part, decouplers perhaps, would turn into the de-facto currency. Or maybe people would just use bitcoin because they can. But for reals - how about 'lunch passes' -
Water: Landings vs Splash

There is an entry in the science file for "Splashed down at the Sun" but you can't achieve it. -
I found an article today about a Cold-war technology used to produce auditory sensations with microwaves. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microwave_auditory_effect This got me thinking, how close are we to having some kind of direct-brain visual interface. Something that could produce an immersive visual experience, without actually having to wear a giant pair of goggles. Cosmic rays can produce cherenkov radiation in the eye's vitreous humor... Or perhaps some kind of phased array antenna in the room could precisely aim microwave photons at your retina from any direction, and they would interfere to produce light with a visible wavelength.

What do you think Jupiter's core is made of?

Man invented Cubic Zirconium gemstones for a reason... -
I went to Gilly and back to low LKO, whew! that took a lot of fuel. Metaphor I don't know how you did it with such a small ship. I needed about 9 km/s each way. I bought three materials bays, a mk1 lander can, and a small RCS lander with a command seat. After the modules are back in LKO, I pick them up with my shuttle.

I'm also using AIES Aerospace. There's a lot of very nice parts in this mod for satellites and Mylar looking spacey stuff! and the Habitat Pack Which is where the big round head on the interplanetary ship comes from. I'm using about 20 other mods too, but most of them don't contribute parts. For example, this is in the Alternis Kerbol system.
