By the way, this thread has just reached Page 500! Let's open the champagne bottles! -
Multi processor space probes with kOS
MedwedianPresident replied to TheCardinal's topic in KSP Fan Works
You mean a system that adapts to problems? Like "If left engine fails lock gimbal of right engine and set thrust limiter to 80%"? Or "Override landing program if not enough fuel for return"? Probes with kOS are interesting, but IRL manned spaceships are often automated too, by the way. -
Kerbal Geographical Society

It surely looks a bit pale, but Italy looks a bit pale too when looked upon from space, doesn't it? Just because the color is a bit brownish and the whole landscape turns into a steppe 40 kilometers to the west does not conflict with the possibility of growing mediterranean crops at the coast. Let's call the coast "the Green Coast". -
I have stayed up as far as to 6 AM during my summer holidays as of now, but today I pulled a real all-nighter. I played KSP until 5:30 and went to bed; however, the sun was already shining so I could not fall asleep or even become tired. After one hour of pointlessly lying in bed, I decided to give up my futile attempts to fall asleep. I drunk some tea at 6:30 and now I'm sitting in front of my PC again (7:50). I hope that I will be tired in the evening so that I can finally go to sleep early.

Kerbal Geographical Society
MedwedianPresident replied to MedwedianPresident's topic in KSP Fan Works
Maybe the Hops Hills/Mountains? Maybe hops could be grown in this area? I always imagined the region at the southern tip of Kafrica as being very fertile with subtropical or tropical climate suitable for hops and wine. It's the "Riviera of Kafrica" where Kerbonauts spend their short holidays in luxury hotels before embarking on year-long expeditions to Jool and Eeloo. -
The sattelite would have to be completely redesigned to accommodate 1.25 m missiles. Is there any mod lying around which offers 0.625 m heatshields? If yes, it would be great. If I will have to use 1.25ers though and my missiles will still be 0.625 SRB's, I will have to ditch the heatshield when the heating would stop being dangerous so that no velocity is wasted. After all, the missiles are supposed to be high-speed kinetic impactors and not burned-out SRB's that slowly tumble towards the surface! However, I agree that the missiles should certainly be nose-heavy. If I'll burn retrograde and let them fall vertically I'll loose to much time and speed. I want them to enter the atmosphere at 4.500 m/s a.) because they are supposed to reach their target in the shortest possible time to prevent the deployment of countermeasures, b.) it is harder to shoot down a missile coming in at 4.500 m/s than one that is coming in at 900 m/s. and c.) because they are kinetic impactors and ideally should impact the ground at the highest possible velocity. In the very ideal case, they would soar through the stratosphere in seconds, not having time to brake, and impact the surface at at least 1.000 m/s. I will try this. I think that it is even used IRL and I hope that it will work with FAR.

The Impact of Shifted Runway Markings
MedwedianPresident replied to something's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I understand that you may be used to a different approach direction but 90% of all KSP players usually land from the west. It's like with right handed and left handed people - because the majority is right handed, most handheld tools or devices are made for right handed people. Would be happy to see a mod which changes the runway though. Another theory would be that the runway used to be shorter and was extended in the eastern direction at some point during the history of the KSC to accommodate larger airplanes which would require a longer braking distance. -
Kerbal Geographical Society
MedwedianPresident replied to MedwedianPresident's topic in KSP Fan Works
Sorry, this was a typo. As you can notice in my other posts, I try to keep up a high standard of grammar and language (it should be taken into account that English is not my mother tongue), but nobody is immune against typographical mistakes. I'm sure that there are some typos even in major dictionaries. But let's not turn this into the Kerbal Grammatical Society but into the Kerbal Geographical Society. As you may have noticed, the Kafrican Alps consist of a short ridge west of the KSC that borders the Eastern Kafrican Lowland (the slightly hilly landscape to the southwest, west and north of the space center). However, the westward transistion is much smoother; the main part of the Kafrican Alps actually consists of subalpine hills that slowly turn into the western steppe landscape. I don't want the names of the mountains and other landscapes to be too spacey (please nothing like Mt. Booster or Explosion Bay) because the Kerbal civilization existed and names for places were invented way before the advent of space flight and the birth of a certain individual whose first name begins with J. Kafrican Alps sounds nice. The view from the KSC is actually fairly similar to some views in Austria and Bavaria (you are standing on a lowland or plain and see far mountains), and these mountains share many features with the Terran Alps such as being fairly high but not the highest landscape on the planet. How about calling the whole mountain zone, including the hills in the west, the Kafrican Alps and calling the ridge the High or Eastern Alps? The smaller mountain ridge at the southern tip of Kafrica (west of Kerbin City) may or may not be related to the Kafrican Alps, especially considering the fact that mountain ridges on Kerbin are usually "broken" by lowlands. How should we call this area? -
A good hike is only possible if you take good food with you. Take a portable grill with you or roast meat or sausages on a campfire and eat lots and lots of sandwiches while walking. Don't forget to drink enough - a couple of bottles of good ol' plain water or lemonade should extinguish your thirst while hiking while when awakening at your campsite an Earl Grey tea never hurts.

A couple of years ago, a thread existed in the Fan Works forum that was dedicated to naming continents and landscapes on Kerbin and other bodies of the Kerbolar system. I want to revive it. The new organization will be dedicated not only to finding names for continents on Kerbin but will also invent various countries and their backstories as well as name various landscapes such as plains or hills and formations such as mountains or craters on the Mun. Let's start with the name for the continent/peninsula on which the KSC is located. Should we take Kafrica or does it sound too kerbalized?
-
Picture taken from a hill just southwest of KSC in the late afternoon/early evening from an elevation of approximately 450 meters ASL. The main massifs of the mountains (only the eastern side of the Kafrican Alps is such a narrow transistion between the coastal lowland and the mountains; the mountains terminate as large foothills in a large area to the west). Proves the fact that you don't have to go far to find beautiful views. Enjoy! Tell me if you like it. If yes, I will post more pictures of beautiful landscapes on Kerbin and other planets.

Hm...I imagine a story where Jeb is sentenced to death and put into a prison in Munar or Minmus orbit. He is shot towards the surface or just deorbited using a cannon or an EVA seat to which a SRB is strapped, but manages to regain orbit using his jetpack and/or is rescued by Bob and Bill.
-
I joined in 0.12. From this time I recall that I built a spaceplane using the C7 airplane parts mod and sent it straight into a collision course towards the mun. I recall that I have heard the sound of my vessel whizzing through air at high speeds (the old atmosphere flight sound from 0.12, those who are veterans like me will understand what I mean) just before impact. I also recall this sound from my early mun landings, and I also recall that KW rocketry or another mod at that time used to have a parachute designed for mun landings. Is it true that the Mun had an atmosphere until 0.13 or 0.14?

What do you think would be the better execution method? Cooking using an engine? Crushing? Shooting a kerbal into an escape trajectory using a cannon?
-
I saw pictures of somebody using landing legs to obstruct hatches. The simplest form of "space prison" would be just a couple of hitchhinkers containing prisoners, with their hatches blocked and no RCS and no means of propulsion, launched into a high orbit and left alone. Docking would be prohibited except for resupply missions. Theoretically, one can create a mining work camp on the Mun. Or how about a high security prison for dangerous lifetime and death row inmates on Eeloo? Somebody should make a story or a cinematic of Jeb being sentenced to death and somehow escaping his prison. Maybe a prison with a special space cannon designed for shooting kerbals sentenced to death to their death (either impact or escape trajectory).
-
Has anybody ever tried to build an orbital high security prison in KSP? High-tech torture labs could be added to it...
-
In a cell right now. Sentenced to death by cooking alive on a rocket engine for stealing a top secret airplane. Over 600 fighters were involved in the search action because the top secret plane could teleport. Luckily, the teleportation device ran out of energy and the plane Jeb stole could be shot down. If you are reading this, agents of the Medwedian Secret Service are already on your way to your apartment or house. Do not resist and your death will be painless.

The stages of ksp (Looking back on our favorite game.)
MedwedianPresident replied to daniel l.'s topic in KSP1 Discussion
0.17 was the update that brought many new planets to us and should be marked separately in the OP. I think that the eras of KSP are as follows: 0.1 - 0.7.2 = Proto-KSP (gradual development from a 2d rocket building and destruction game to old KSP) 0.7.2 - 0.11 = Old KSP (only Kerbin existed at that time) 0.12 - 0.13 = Classical KSP (while the visual appearance resembled that of Old KSP, 0.12 brought us the Mun and of many new features; I started playing KSP during 0.12) 0.14 = Early Middle KSP (revamp of the terrain; transistion from free to paid; possibility to fly multiple vessels) 0.15 - 0.16 = Middle KSP (addition of Minmus and of the Spaceplane Hangar as well as integration of the C7 aircraft parts mod into the stock game; 0.16 brought us EVA's) 0.17 = Late Middle KSP (The most important update was the addition of new planets as well as of the IVA function) 0.18 - 0.20 = Early Modern KSP (revamp of the terrain; addition of ion engines) 0.21 - 0.25 = Modern KSP (Many subtle but new features; development starts to slow with regular smaller updates and occasional large updates) 0.90 = Late Modern KSP (The prelude to 1.0) 1.0 and onwards = New KSP (Full version!) -
What is the Largest Rocket Engine for KSP 1.1.3?
MedwedianPresident replied to Turk_WLF's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I can't tell you which mod holds the record now, but back in 0.13 there was a mod called "Uber Hyper Giant Engine" or something like that. The bell of the engine stretched over the whole launchpad and its thrust was astronomic. However, I think that the 7.5 engines from Space-Y Heavy Lifters Extension would be comparable to any "Uber Engines" lying around here, especially if clustered somehow. They are very efficient and provide a high TWR if used properly. A plus would be that rockets made with 7.5 parts tend not to wobble because the tanks are naturally fatter and shorter yet hold enough fuel to power beasts such as the Omega-Ratite. -
I made a cinematic today:

MedwedianPresident's Cinematics As the title of the thread suggests, I will post my cinematics in this thread. I have one so far: Feel free to comment and criticize. I am currently using a PC, and have a low framerate due to EVE and Scatterer.
