Yeah, I probably should tone them down, but I've seen things (such as grand tour with a jetpack etc) that makes me think someone could do it. And to be honest, I'm not even gonna be sad if nobody can do it. I just want to see what the limit is for KSPers. And besides, there is easy and intermediate mode for those who do not wish to try the Watney and Kraken modes just yet. And trust me, I have the utmost respect for anyone who even attempts this challenge. Advice taken on though, thank you. I'll add a section for those who attempt the challenge. Cheers! Ryan

Okay. Here goes. I present to you The 'Belly of the Beast' Challenge! This challenge is for the best of KSP'ers, but all are welcome to try! You've been everywhere in the system? Landed, returned? Done the Jool 5, the grand tour? Pfft. That's cute. But you haven't done THIS! Here's what it entails: 'Easy' Mode: Enter Joolian Atmosphere from an orbit of your choice, descend to 150,000m, return to an orbit that does not enter the atmosphere. HyperEdit enabled to get into orbit in the first place Intermediate: Enter Joolian Atmosphere from a stable orbit of your choice, descend to 100,000m, return to an orbit that does not enter the atmosphere. HyperEdit enabled to get into orbit in the first place, but not as EPIC Watney mode: Enter Joolian Atmosphere from a stable orbit of your choice, descend to 50,000, return to an orbit that does not enter the atmosphere. HyperEdit disabled! KRAKEN mode: Enter Joolian Atmosphere from a stable orbit of your choice, descend to whatever you feel is badass enough or MORE (you insane magician), return to an orbit that does not enter the atmosphere. And impress me, if you feel daring. HyperEdit disabled! (Note: Hyperedit or any other software / file editing may be used to get into a stable orbit to begin the challenge from, but you MUST evidence you have not used cheats in a breach of these rules, through screenshots or a video, and you MUST remove any mods before beginning the challenge) So there you have it! I've challenged you to this feat. I do not doubt that it has been done before, but in THIS version? With re-entry heat, drag and other factors to count for (did I mention crushing gravity?), this is no challenge for the faint of heart. But this challenge is what I think should be the pinnacle of excellence. Record it, screenshot it, just let me know your stories! Whether you fail or you succeed, I want to hear what YOU did. Even if you failed, to take on this task writes you into the legendary history books and earns your name the strength and honour anyone daring enough to attempt this challenge deserves! And even if you don't wish to take part, share this challenge around, or just comment on what you think! I want to see some Youtubers taking on this challenge like the weekly Reddit challenges, so lets let them all know! If people start to do this challenge, I'll make a badge for each challenge mode for you to put on your signature, and your name will be written into the list below! If this challenge has been done before than please tell me, but I have seen NO attempts at anything like this in 1.0+. Please try to use the latest version of the game, the idea is that the latest changes give it the challenge factor. And to all those who dare to venture into the belly of the beast... Good luck... You'll need it. Hall of Fame: -YOUR NAME HERE! Honourable mentions:

Okay, so I used what was left of the lf+ox to get a 45km periapsis, then used all but 31 units of lf to land me on the runway. Overshot a tad thanks to my poorly planned steep re-entry, but it was otherwise perfect, no problems. Hit the atmosphere at 3500 m/s and two aero brakes brought me safely to land. I honestly didn't expect the orca to do it, but I got no heat warnings at all! You sure build these things to last! Cheers Ryan

Got it!

Hey, long time no speak! I've done a lot of stuff since we last spoke (got the new magic boulder, landed on Tylo etc). Recently, I sent up a probe with the new Gold HECS probe core and an ion drive, to do a flyby of Tylo and Laythe (practicing gravity slingshots). Anyway, I grabbed some science etc, and im trying to get it back. Got an encounter, but not enough dV to capture, so ill be dunking straight into the atmosphere if I want it back. Problem THERE is its got no chutes or heatshields - I wanted to get some low Jool atmosphere science, but realised I already had it. So here it is, headed straight for a firey death on Kerbin. I figured I could grab it though. It'd require a lot of fuel to match its approach. I need an SSTO. Put a grabber claw in the bay, strip out anything I don't need, and the dV won't be a problem. Trouble here is getting one with a big enough bay. And after I deleted a bunch of craft when 'clearing up' my folders, I now only have the Orca in my arsenal. It can do it, but im worried about throwing it into the atmosphere at about 5000m/s. I'd prefer a claymore, but the download links aren't working, you aren't to blame don't worry. Anyway, this'll be exciting! I'll keep you posted, good catching up!

Finishing what Scott started!

Yea, I found that out from the song. I thought it was fitting also because of how easily it soars in the clouds. -
Finishing what Scott started!

Just landed it again. Fuel margins are very tight, 75km orbits are practically the limit if you wanna get back again. -
So, on Tuesday, Scott Manley did another livestream. He played KSP for the most part of it, and in the first section he tried to create a spaceplane that could reach orbit using the assistance of the stratolauncher. Now, not denying he did a good job. But when it didn't reach orbit, I just saw a bit of wasted potential. So I took a few hours to scrap together this. So, what I realised with Scott's design was that the efficiency and power were in the wrong places. You see, the stratolauncher was based on efficiently using fuel to reach 10k meters or so, then the spaceplane should detach and activate the aerospike, which powered it into space. Now, the problem with this is that the aerospike, although rather efficient for an lf+o engine, just isn't going to cut it. It has way too high of a fuel consumption for its size. So here's what I did: Step one: Change out the landing gear. I don't really like to use fixed landing gear on spaceplanes as it ruins that sleek look they have, so I swapped those out right off the bat. Step two: Electricity. The spaceplane itself didn't have any electric generation as far as I could tell, so I put an RTG in the nose and a small solar panel on the top of the cabin. I also attached two battery packs to the back underside. Step three: The stratolauncher. So, as I said, this thing didn't need efficiency; we aren't going to be needing that in the end, it'll be jettisoned. So, I swapped out the intakes for shock cones and the wheesley's for panthers. I didn't lose too much efficiency, and as I said that won't matter; we're throwing away that entire bit anyway. And for safety, I plopped in a couple more units of fuel into the wings. Wider margin for error I guess. Step four: The Spaceplane. So I recognized the aerospike as a problem right off the bat, and swapped it out for the terrier. That gives me efficiency, and since the stratolauncher will be giving me a lot more force into orbit than before, the spaceplane won't be needing the insane 180kn the aerospike spits out. It makes it to orbit almost like that, so I threw in a few Torodial tanks for good measure, used the offset tool to push it in a little, and that was that. Step five: Oh yeah. It needs a name. From looking at the stratolauncher I saw similarities to the Ramnstein song Engel when performed live. The wing shape at least. So that what it is. The Engel. And that's it! I put a parachute on for landing, and despite how close together the back wheels are it seems to be pretty stable. I strapped a radiator to the bottom to help with re-entry, and it tends to take that quite badly, but I'm not making something that's perfect; I'm just finishing what Scott started! I'll try to leave a craft file below so you can use it yourself. I'm sure with a little more editing you can give it docking capabilities. Thanks to Scott Manley for inspiring this project. It's been a nice little adventure for me. The livestream (on youtube) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axSxIUHs_No (Note: The link is bugged a little, it starts at the bit where the spaceplane building bit ends, so just send it back to the start. Apologies for that inconvenience) The craft file! (Please say this works!) http://www.mediafire.com/download/gbbf0rm3q7zbg31/Engel.craft And Scott's Twitch channel! He's a great KSP Youtuber and streamer, along with other space related content, if you haven't heard of him, where have you been! https://www.twitch.tv/szyzyg/profile Thanks for taking time to read this, try this, comment etc. It's always appreciated! In the words of Scott Manley... FLY SAFE! (The craft link works, just you have to copy paste it. Sorry bout that.)

Hey again! Love that RTG pic btw. Well, when I saw TAL's video I thought it would be a step too far, but I apologise for ever doubting you! Nonetheless, the sideways cargo bay draws my eye every time - I just love it! I'm not in the habit of making my own craft, and although I've made quite a few successful launchers, I can never find the patience for the low G burns the nuke gives out. However, I doubt anyone enjoys those long but necessary burns, but you never fail to make it seem less like an electric car and more like a Ferrari with a Saturn V engine on the back. As always great craft, and probably (if you don't mind me saying) one of your best achievements to date! Keep it up! Srsly tho, more sideways cargo bays! They RULE!

Nice job with the Eve rover! As you've probably gathered, centre of mass needs to be very low down. I tend to base my rovers on a turtle as that helps to stick to the low COM model. This is a rover I slapped together quickly and it flipped very quickly. Now, it works, but when going faster than 3m/s in low G or once a tire is broken, it just flips and there is NO chance of getting it back. Believe me dude, getting a rover down to Eve surface is 1 up from anything I've ever done. Quick question though - Are you ever going to get it back again? *HINT HINT CHALLENGE HINT HINT*

Intrepid. Stage-And-A-Half Shuttle.
ryan234abc replied to Rune's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
You have a knack for fitting a lot of stuff onto a small area. Your subassembly pack proves that, and the fact that you always have handy little gadgets in the cargo bays of your SSTOs. Truth be told, early career saves don't really need too much fancy gear - by the time you need things as complicated as SSTOs you've unlocked all the parts. I've always just wondered what you'd come out with on a smaller scale - all due respect, but most of your craft are mk3/mk2. If I had to pick which of your releases I like the best, besides the Eagle/Trident, I'd choose the subassembly pack. I love the little ingenious gadgets, and the K-22 (was that the name of the little shuttle?) was amazing! I guess I just like efficiency, and by that I mean getting a lot of quality for little quantity. Still, I wouldn't tell you to change what you're doing right now - big and beautiful (add a dash of ingenious ship-naming) is what makes you, YOU. Still, the Trident is my life. -

Hey again. This is certainly a unique craft of yours - I'm used to Single Stage crafts after all - but it was a pleasant surprise to see this. Admittedly, I've always had a thing for external tanks that don't have their own engines, they show a great ability to control the intention to add ' MOAR BOOSTERS'. Since I only recently TRULY mastered matching orbits and intercepting for docking a few days ago, a career game has suddenly become a possibility for me, so this couldn't have come at a better time. Don't have much time to try it RIGHT NOW, but I'll be sure to get round to it - I can't wait to try this out! As a side note, do you have any low tech-tree craft? I don't doubt my ability to make huge mk3 crafts, but it's been a while since I've had to use quality and not quantity. After all, gotta deal with funds, science etc. Much appreciated Ryan Oh and also. Question about signatures. I wanna get a picture into my signature, but can't through imgur, copy paste or anything. Any suggestions? EDIT: Nvm, did it. I'm stupid at the best of times. -
Eyyy I'm back! Wow I missed a lot. The latest VB looks amazing with the new hollow interior ring. I'll be sure to test that out. Was there anything else you uploaded since Christmas? The new forum makes it hard to find your started threads.

Alright! I really dunno if this thread has been done yet, or if I'm putting it in the right section - the new layout is still, well, new to me. This thread is gonna be about the new Vector engine. Is it OP? Do you like it? What would you change about it? All your thoughts and opinions regarding the engine are welcome here! If you want to post your craft photos featuring the engine, feel free! Is it's Vector, it's fine to put here! I'll start this off - I LOVE the Vector engine - the gimbal and thrust coupled with its small size makes it ideal for those Mk1 size ships that need an extra boost. Post everything Vector here! Ryan

Extra fuel tanks to attach to the top of existing SRB's for a bit more fuel, air bags / balloons (Forgot what the official term for them is) for landing on Duna and in oceans and perhaps (if they added GP2 or more, thicker atmosphered planets) heat resistant plates to add to different parts of a ship rather than just adding a heat shield or using a fairing. Dunno if any of them have been put into mods, but honestly the problem with mods is if they break or KSP updates you have to wait before you can use your save file again.

Alright. Its working fine now, they've fixed the images, so don't worry about that, but the quotes still seem to have the BB codes before them. As for the Claymore, it's one of the most bad*ss craft I've seen yet - only the name rivals its bad*ssery. To be honest, i'd never have thought you'd make a craft that big. In other news, the Foil recently saved a crew of 3 from the surface of Duna. Admittedly, it was my noobery that landed them there in the first place - I thought the atmospheric height of Duna was 35000 not 50000. Don't ask me where that came from, but The Von Braun station hit the surface at 360 m/s. Still, the science module and cupola cockpit survived, so all three crew members made it back out alive. Hats off to the Foil, they'd still be there without it.

Nice video there! Certainly shows off the craft. Did you add the sounds of touchdown etc post production or was it a mod? They really made the video what it is. As for the craft, I have to agree with you; it's got some of the best looks out there. I'm going to use one as a refueller for my Eve System ships; Gilly proves to be a good target for refuelling. -
Wow! I'm hyped now, EO:0 was amazing. And kudos to you, pumping out these every day or two must take a lot of effort, and so soon after the conclusion of Order Zero. I remember the simulator with the gas cloud around Tylo, although can't remember whether that was DOB or EO:0. And to be honest, I can't remember if it was a gas cloud either; it was a while since I read that. Either way, I'm daring enough to bet that could make an appearance. The again, this is a Kuzzter comic; I'm going to be pleasantly surprised.
