What Are Things You've Heard That Made You Facepalm?
Hcube replied to michaelsteele3's topic in The Lounge
But here the engine is under the fuel tanks... Or maybe the tanks are around the engine... No, he just put a bunch of 1.25m tanks under a LV-T45 and a command pod on top ! Urgh... -
How about experts that work at Boeing and are able to recognize something that they have designed themselves ? Oh, and serial numbers on the flap. And i challenge you to find some foliage that can hide a 2*1m piece of wreckage on a beach of a small island for more than 70 years ! Last thing: bombers and transports over La Réunion? I kinda doubt it! Anyway its not like finding this will solve the mystery of what happened on the aircraft and what caused the crash...

What Are Things You've Heard That Made You Facepalm?
Hcube replied to michaelsteele3's topic in The Lounge
i always facepalm when people use "electrocution" (implies the electroshock killed you) instead of "electrification"(doesn't specify wether you survived or not)... especially on the news, like : "this dude was electrocuted and his health state is critical". You don't say... i also facepalmed hard when i introduced a friend to KSP and put the LFO tanks *under* the engine... Seriously, what did he expect ? -
So you mean a sub-orbital RDV then orbital injection with the mothership to use the engine that has the best Isp ? Well... why not ? but it sounds very risky and also not very cost/mass efficient : the whole mecanism to attach/detach the engine package would probably be very heavy and complex, with a lot of valves ! while the gains from using a smaller lander and have a better Isp for a single burn are probably not huge...

Why does gravity get weaker with distance?
Hcube replied to Rdivine's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Yes that's it ! it's a really interesting instrument. There was recently a TV program about it on Arte with an interview of an italian astrophysician that works there, i loved it !EDIT: What would the celerity of such a wave be ? -
Why does gravity get weaker with distance?
Hcube replied to Rdivine's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Haha, no i wasn't talking about the LISA pathfinder mission ! I was talking about something like the LIGO : as you said, there are two dispositives like it in the USA, but there is a third one very similar to those located in Italy (that's the one i know) I'ts a huge 3km-wide X with lasers continuously measuring the lenght of the "arms". I guess we are talking about the same thing -

Hcube replied to Rdivine's topic in Science & Spaceflight
yup, and none of those gravitational waves has been detected yet... there is this instrument in italy made of 3km-long "arms" that form a cross, and should get longer (of the order of the nm, very small elungation !)when a gravitational wave passes by... I can't remember the name of that instrument though... can anyone refresh my mind ? -

Hcube replied to Rdivine's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Whaaaaat ? no, i don't think that you understand what gravity waves are. Just think of the regular gravittional force here. Yes, every single thing in the universe that has a mass is attracted by said planet. But in the case of earth, it is so far away that this force is next to nothing, (it can be calculated easily btw and would be incredibly close to 0) so the earth isn't going to be cruising towards Kepler-452B -
On one hand i like that we will have to build a DSN ourselves and use it, since it had been missing forever in KSP. It's a nice addition. Also, new and useful antennas ! On the other hand... 1/i thought the game was feature-complete in 0.90.0 ? Oh, and what have we here since ... (cough* aero, isru, heat, now comms system...??!! and life support pretty much confirmed.) Err... that cost the game a lot of bugs with every update, that should have been fixed in beta. Not fond of this myself. 2/The kerbin-DSN looks very overpowered. It looks like the comms system we shall put up will only be useful when planetary occultations happen (-almost never.). I hope that there will be a lot of difficulty options. 3/Yay, as if the probes were not nerfed enough yet ! it's basically better to put a kerbal in any situation/mission. 0.6ton landing can with a kerbal weighs nothing, gives you crew reports, costs nothing, no electricity charge issues... why use a probe anyway ? You can get kerbals for free with rescues. Hopefully a life support will come pretty soon to balance that out.

This bugs me. Did you maybe forget to add some () ? Because you can change E=-mu/(2a) can be changed to Ea=-mu/2 , but E=-mu/2*a can not be changed to Ea=-mu/2 im sorry if this should be obvious to me but i don't know this formula so it sounds weird very very interesting post though !

I wish SRBs had thrust curves and thrust vectoring...

Space Plane stuffs!!
Hcube replied to CaptainTurbomuffin's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I voted for everything except the heat exchannger, wich sounds too complex for stock and would better fit in a mod like RO. I aalso didn't vote for the CoT stuff, because it is not really essential, and some mods like TCA (thrust controlled avionics) do it very well. Sure, i'd love to have those CoT computers you suggest, but i'd rather like the developers to spend more time on other stuff you posted, and bugfixes -
Soyuz launch - Expedition 44 - successful launch
Hcube replied to Albert VDS's topic in Science & Spaceflight
It's actually a crew of three... Nice launch ! Loved to see R2 floating free after third stage cutoff (wich looked quite brutal btw). -
How does it work ?
-
Still KSP's SRBs are very underpowered, since many liquid fuel engines are way more powerful than the biggest available SRB. Also their Isp has been trashed with 1.0 ...the burn time is sooo low ! They cannot be used for a Ariane 5 or Shuttle config...

Infinite electricity
Hcube replied to Scientia1423's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
YES ! I just forgot to enable the fuel cell on my eeloo probe and that would save me. Maybe just make the infinite fuel cheat also give infinite electricity charge... -
Oh i thought it was at noon like elon musk tweeted. I guess i'll wait a bit then anyway, it wo 't be live, will it ?

Unless you really like soda and use your mouth as a nozzle !

are you sure we can see it there ? On this website i see no indication of any webcast even though it should be starting in a few minutes...

First off, it has never been done on purpose and on large scale like that. now if it ever was to happen, there would be no side effects apart from the eventual toxicity of the aerosols (wich i'm sure would be taken into consideration --' ). If done properly the only effect would be a stop of the global warming due to the change in albedo... Can't think of any side effect

because there are about 12,000km of rock between you and the sun, wich is the only important light source around. The light from the stars is way too weak to enlight anything (inverse square law with the light propagating in all directins

Have you tried looking for such tutorials on a dedicated photoshop forum ? Cause this forum right there is about gameplay questions for KSP. (Wich is a completely different thing.) This is the wrong place to ask this question...

It's all gone a bit wobbly
Hcube replied to bigcalm's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Hi ! it seems to me that your refueling station is getting huge... and that is Kraken bait. The simple fact that it is pretty big and has a lot of docking ports and joints might be responsible for the wobbling. Also the fact that you have many huge structures connected by reltively small docking ports ! maybe try building something more "compact", that would have more than 1 connection per module (try attaching the cylindrixal tanks together with 2 docking ports on each side, those are pretty sturdy. Or, if your part count is OK, you could install KIS and space tape the hell out of this. -
no, a turbopump is not really like a car turbo, since it pumps a reactive and not a product, like LOX and not car exhaust (as magnemoe said ) it is a very complicated machinery with many moving parts, and is very often the cause of engine failures... the biggest turbopumps even need a gas generator, a small "rocket engine" to run them ! there are some videos on NASA's YT channel where they test the gas generator that drives the F1 engine's HPOTP (high pressure ox turbopump) and it's a huge flametheower itself ! Probably not very safe to make and use, especially when pumping two fuels that like to spontaneously combust when in contact...

thanks for the answers ! @pincushionman : well, pressurized tanks are crazy heavy so a turbopump is pretty much essential to do this pressure work... @SAI Peregrinus : wow gasoline and gaseous oxygen ? the Isp must be terribly low ! @shynung : yeah, hypergolics are toxic, corrosive, expensive...and explosive
