  1. after all he is the one that denied the existence of the restricted relativity in a previous thread... some "rutter antivaccine propaganda" was to be expected ! On topic : @Darnok : this is (very) old news and changes nothing to the classic genetics experiments (cross test...) and the more advanced ones You said that this discovery invalidates every single previous genetics experiment but this is only your interpretation (wich is wrong). for example it was already known that some codons could behave (aka be interpreted and traduced) differently depending on the environment and in the "environment pressure", the fact that some new dimension of data encoding was found doesn't invalidate the rest...
  2. well... it's summer, what would you expect ? so just like every year the climate should get even warmer in August and then the temperatures will drop... 34C is manageable, come on
  3. Are amateur or homemade liquid fuel engines even possible ? i guess that you can't do much without some kind of turbopump, unless using hypergolic propellants (wich sounds like a bad idea). How did Goddard do ?
  4. I know that, but that´s not what the article is saying ! It´s the "old=hard" that is misleading EDIT also, K^2, the oceanic plate does not dive under the continental because it's softer, but because it's denser (2,7 for continental vs 2,9 for oceanic iirc). it actually gets denser as it ages... (But then again, it being soft (ductile) is necessary for it to dive, even though it is not the cause)
  5. ...Before you guys lose another mars climate orbiter
  6. interesting article bit theres something that bugs me : err... so the subducting plate, Juan de Fuca, is oceanic and the one on top (i don't know the precise vocab in english...), the North American plate, is continental right ? But the continental crust is the oldest and is about 4.5 giga-years while any oceanic crust is no older than a few million years (around 200-400millions iirc). and that is totally in contradiction with the article... So according to their "old rocks get stiffer", the oceanic crust should be ice cream-soft and the continental crust rock-hard (pun intended). wich is not true and brings another nonsense in the article... can anyone enlighten me ? i might be wrong there but i'm pretty sure for the rock ages and the real "elasticity" of the oceanic crust

the last aerodynamics rant thread was closed but since your post didn't look like irony, i'm reacting here :

""I am sorry but parachutes should be able to open at 2500 m/s all the air behind the shock cone is subsonic i.e. less then 343 m/s. Force at low density would be minimal and heating would be limited to the shock cone. Only way a chute would break is if you get to low in the atmosphere while still carrying significant velocity.""

    tell me about it :)

  8. I don"t want to be this annoying guy, but there is this mod for you : Throttle Controlled Avionics I use it and I love it. It does exactly what you are asking for ! - - - Updated - - - otherwise you could just tweak the thrust limiters of some engines and abuse RCS power, but that's long, tedious, hard, and cheap. !
  9. Happened to me, but reloading the game did the trick. Try backing up your saves and then re installing the game...
  10. Nice ! I'm going to bed now though took me some time to post this heads up on the forum, so i'm glad the launch was successful !
  11. ESC-A cutoff ! EDIT : wow, i thought the first separation was planned for about 20 minutes after liftoff... EDIT 2 : the presentator saying that they "lost the signal in the libreville tracking station"... whereas the DDO was saying that the control was just transitioning... so don't worry Release ! EDIT 3 : wow she really makes a lot of mistakes... "we can't release the other satellite under 4000km altitude" while the craft is already 11 000km high... EDIT : i am the mistaken one in the story facepalm (grumpy me : she made other mistakes anyway... grmbl)
  12. Star One C4 about to be released at (more or less) T+20 min ! i wonder if they will cover it EDIT : french accent again... ouch
  13. Yeah Ariane 5 is an oversized first stage that almost makes orbit by itself ! (and the SRBs). the second stage is only for GTO boost. The HM-7B engine has an Isp of 447 seconds EDIT : ninja'ed ! yeah it has really good isp, but ridiculously low thrust... it's around 70kN iirc
  14. MECO and SEP, and then HM-7B ignition 4 seconds later ! pretty cool what a small second stage EDIT : here goes the annoying "ads" fro the customer instead of the actual launch... grmbl
  15. No, it's the remains of some propellant still burning, but so little that no more thrust EDIT : see : no more meaningful thrust is produced. the booster are actually pushed away by 4 "sepratrons" each. Fairing sep ! nice respiration !
  16. Yeah, really ! The weather seems very overcast though, we probably won't see much of the rocket...
  17. Yeah this one is even worse ! hey i thought americans liked french accent hmmm a lot of stuff about the customer/arianespace relation, but it's T-7 minutes here, how about some countdown coverage ?
  18. Stream has started ! that presentator tho... french accent FTW ! - - - Updated - - - Nah it's about 11 minutes... anyway the window is like 20 minutes long !
  19. So as you probably know, the 14th of July was not only New Horizons' flyby of Pluto, but also the national day in France (wich happens to be my country) And that famous """"singer""" (he's just an intellectually-challenged model) dude tweeted that : Translation : Duty of memory for the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of France. Hard facepalm Well, the Karma comeback did happen : everyone is calling him a ...... on the internet
