Your computer setup (and any funny stuff about it)

More or less, but I haven't seen a bezel on a monitor like that in many a year. Even though these ones only have analogue inputs the picture is pretty good and the text is crisp (unlinke my older 19"4:3). -
Anyone Else Recently Build A Bad@** PC in Reponse to upcoming 1.1?

Assuming I'm not upgrading specifically for KSP, how much ram do I need for gaming these days? Are they still mostly 32bit? Most of my other software is 32bit, so KSP is really the only ram hog I know of, and I did reach 8gb in linux pretty easily. -
Isn't it the 2600? I never really looked at the model number.

Throttle was another one. I just button mashed until something worked. There really needs to be an on screen equivalent for RCS, SAS, Throttle & Stages. Just like we have for Flight, Map &Docking mode. All in good time I guess

I must look at your build thread. Mine is still unfinished due to a deliberate attempt to focus on my studies. I've just scored 4 x 19" wide screen monitors for free (wife's work is throwing them away). My 26" is beginning to die, so these will make an "interesting" backup. They don't have any stands with them, so I need to get a fancy pants 4 X VESA mount. -
Surely all of it? > 2000 hours in game is kind of telling isn't it? Probably the most genius thing was to use the space bar to go to space. It was so obvious that I couldn't figure it out in the demo for a good 10 minutes then Google showed me what a blind fool I was and then shortly after I made the full purchase.

I had weird behaviour when using a powered sub hub. The pc wouldn't boot properly until I changed to a different power supply for the hub. -

The beastie. 9 years old chokes, gasps and wheezes on anything over 200 parts. the fans are as loud as my shopvac in summer. it originally had a different mobo but I over tightened a chipset heat sink screw and stripped traces off the board. Oh there were tears. That was a fairly expensive mistake. -

Not sure that you could really. I'm not ready to drop the $$$ just yet. But this is a price friendly option. -

Wow, I hadn't noticed the i3-6100 before. The base speed is pretty nice and apparently it can be overclocked on z170 board too. -

@danilon62 I do like those old Mac cases. Will it support a regular atx board or do you need to modify it? I remember once buying a machine (not a Mac) and not knowing it was a BTX board, which almost nobody made, which meant no upgrade path -

Excellent. Excellent. Shall I continue? When upgrading, I go for the most power that I can afford. That power also happens to to be beneficial to KSP. Right now, a lot of power is in pretty close reach for not a modest cash contribution compared to years past. Am I building for KSP, or office365? You be the judge. -

Lies, darn lies! Also a PC that can run KSP, doesn't have to be used soley for KSP. But it could! KSPOS. If only I was smarter than my cat! P.S. My KSP Mug arrived today. Happiness is a fast compute and a warm cup of Kerbal tea. -

Personally I'm leaning toward an off the shelf liquid cooler: Cooler Master Nepton 120XL Its more expensive, but supposed to be pretty quiet. (max 27db) I need a quiet PC. Mine sounds like a vacuum cleaner. That said, the one you chose should be ok, though you will hear it (max 36db). Having gone through a lot of supposedly quiet fans in my day, what it says on the box isn't quite what you get in reality. -

Yah, that's the plan. I have a fancy cooler now, but it's not silent. And it takes up a lot of room! Anyway just passed another assignment. A little bit closer to getting my new rig! -
What KSP could look like... in VR! Apollo11 Demo!!!
T.A.P.O.R. replied to Cricro76's topic in The Lounge
Oh man, if only! For starters I'd get my wisdom teeth out much earlier. I dunno, were CRT monitors available in larger that 4:3 19"? I had one and it was big front to back (heavy too). Also very expensive in 2000. Very very expensive. -
Not a criticism, just my own (possibly misguided) opinion on a celestial food product.

@DoctorDavinci Yessir. Focussing for extended periods frequently over a handful of years is enough for for eyes to change shape. This might not be considered damage exactly, but years of being an indoor kid accelerated my need for ocular augmentation. When you work at a compute and play at a compute, your physiology does some self editing and usually not for the betterment of one with such habits. -

@eddiew It'll most likely be a 6700k (they're the same price as the 4790k at the moment in Oz). Shooting for 32GB of DDR4 too. Will be keeping the same old video card though, even my laptop's GT220M can handle stock on full settings (the CPU can't keep up though). My old beast used to have a c2q, but I found a faster CPU cheap (hence the dual cores on the current build). @wumpus Yep, I know $1000 isn't much for a full build. I actually found a couple of PC builders on Ebay that can supply a full 6700k machine for a little over a grand. Granted they're not using top of the line parts, and they use onboard graphics, but they'd leave my c2d in the dirt. Heck even the i3 system I had built for my father in law runs circles around my machine and it was only $400 all up (I already had a family licence for win7). Basically all I'm after is CPU, Cooler, Mobo & Ram. I'd really like to upgrade the PSU to something nice like a Seasonic Snow Silent, but that will come later. I'll be keeping the graphics card from my current machine. I replaced the case last year with a Fractal Define r5 in the hopes to make my loud compute quieter (it did, but still not great as the fans have to run hard to keep it cool). So that will come to the new build too. KSP is maxing out my 8GB ram in Linux (it steadily fills up even without reverting, so I think there might be a memory leak in there somewhere. Mods or KSP I don't know). Alas it is DDR2 so I have to take a hit on the wallet there. May as well move up to DDR4. But what speed? A buddy of mine gave me a Samsung Evo 120GB SSD a while back and it did improve things significantly for KSP load times. Not a heck of a lot of space on there though. 120GB fills up fast! My LCD is ok, but the backlight is beginning to fail. It doesn't wake up from a short sleep and needs the PC to re-boot once its gone black. Its a decent size too at 26" so I'm keeping $ aside to replace it eventually. I do have a spare 24" but I'd feel a bit mean stealing it from Mrs T.A.P.O.R. I just want a faster, quieter and cooler machine! Here's what I've found under $1000 AUD $515 - 6700K $128 - Cooler Master Nepton 120XL $218 - Asus Z170-K $129 - Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory -

Sweet, just wanted a basic overclock facility, nothing too fancy. I'll be sticking with my GPU as its still pretty decent and way more than KSP demands.
