My First Rover atempt
FyunchClick replied to MajorGosnell's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I'm not one to answer, my rovers end up doing this a lot -
They have probably just hybernated as is established Kuzzterverse lore afaik.

Oh yes. FDC Regulations clearly state that they should be offered, without charge, "Meals and refreshments in proportion to the waiting time".

Isn't that apocalypse now? Although Ritt der Walkuren does go nicely with most kerbal missions, right up to the point where something goes bang, after that it's mostly ironic.

They might just. Referencing that "star trek episode where good and evil kirk&friends are mixed up right? Well, perhaps Kuzzter was inspired by that star trek episode, and just continued on in a startrecky-back-guy style? Plus, the alternate universe angle would tie it to the episode with the goatees which was also an alternate universe. Does the regular KSC runway have a 27 at it's east end? I like the idea though but if this is right it probably means it's not a star trek episode reference or vice versa. I'm leaning towards the alternate universe angle tho. Kerbfleets universe is pretty happy-go-lucky place, an alternate setting that's diametrically opposite to it may just be what a writer looking for a break needs?

Also hundreds or more hours in, and I'm arriving at Moho (after at least 4 failed attempts and having to send an emergency refuel because I misjudged my capture burn and am stuck in a very eccentric orbit) only to discover I've forgotten to add an antenna and can't do an orbital survey because of it. It's part of the charm. -
loving the stuff you put on laythe, especially the mining rover. do you have any craft files posted somewhere?

Hehe, and it has no antenna clipped through the wing either.

Are you sure? The option I found when I searched a while back is broken and it still updated.

Just now: transfering from Duna to Ike and totally misjudging my intercept burn after alligning orbital planes (boy, that Oberth is a doozie). I know I won't have the dV to make it down if I do a parking orbit first so I'm having to go straight in. Front wheel touches down with just 5 m/s left in the tank. Luckily, it's pretty abundant in resources, so I'm going to be back up and going home before too long. Yeah, I know, totally ripped this ship off from Kuzzter, including, as it turned out, a bingo fuel landing on Ike.

^ This. If you bought through steam it'll steamroll the new version right in, and you may be looking at a week or two, three of downtime untill your mods are updated, and if you have a copy of your install you can just keep on playing 1.004 untill you've got all the mods you wanted on 1.005.

When setting up the capture burn maneuver node from Kerbin, cycle the focus through the planets by using the tab key untill you hit your destination planet/moon, that way the node doesn't collapse and you can keep tweaking it. If you set the focus using the mouse, it'll collapse and you first have to fiddle clicking it open again before you can tweak it. I've found that you can usually get a pretty accurate node set up for nearby worlds like Duna, setting a PE up untill a dozen km or so of what you're looking for with with some accuracy. Of course, hitting that exactly is a lot harder since you'll be burning for a while but it doesn't hurt to try and aim as close as you can.

But it's also a lot heavier and not particularly useful for the purpose of SSTO due to the abysmal TWR compared to it's own weight. All my SSTO's now rely on rockets to get from about mach 3-something to orbital speed, and the LV-N just contributes about 200-250 m/s to that when rockets flame out after they pushed my apoapsis up to 60-65 km or so and have plenty of time-to-apoapsis to burn into a comfy LKO. For the most part they're there because they get me to Minmus with ease. If I'd replace their weight with rocket fuel I'd make orbit even easier.

well, you did give us a great deal of top notch entertainment for free, so in return I'll refrain from screaming bloody murder... this time. happy grinding.

how much can actually be jammed into a service bay
FyunchClick replied to 322997am's topic in KSP1 Discussion
@Brainlord, how did you rig it for transport? I've found with 2.5m Service bays, anything clipping even the slightest makes the thing behave like it's haunted (twitching like crazy and more often than not breaking the stack). I'd love to see a pic btw. Not stuffing per-se, but I'd like to cram all science, ISRU and any other bits that would otherwise hang off the sides or clutter up the stack in MKIII bays, and arrange it so it acts like a work area my Kerbals can move about in like so. Btw, did you guys know that if you put a "s" or "l" at the end of the image ID of a picture hosted on Imgur, it resizes? (above image link is http://i.imgur.com/v0mUGFh.png, but by changing it to http://i.imgur.com/v0mUGFhl.png it sizes it down) -
Hmm, daily, the first thing I do when I have a cup of coffee is log on and check this and Kuzzters thread for updates. I think I may have a problem.

No, the one west of KSC is Mt. Whoopstooshort, as established here.

Put on a set of rover wheels in addition to landing struts. That way you can land a mile away and leisurely drive over. Saves a bunch of fuel you'd spend on hovering.

Gravitational maneuver
FyunchClick replied to Gloom Demon's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
With v1.004, I usually start a 5 or 10 degrees turn to the East right off the Launchpad, then turn SAS to prograde hold in with the nav ball in surface mode, that way the drag from the atmosphere is straight back and you don't have stability issues. If needed, I'll nudge it a bit so I hit about half of 45 degrees at 2.5 km altitude, 45 degrees at 10. Then when my apoapsis hits 50/60 km, I'll throttle to get apoapsis about 45 seconds in front of me, and I'll let it drop down further the closer I get to my intended orbit height. This will usually get me in a neat 70/80 km orbit. I only bother gunning straight for the horizon at around 35/40 km altitude if the craft has such a poor TWR that I'm afraid I may not be able to hold the apoapsis at 30/45 seconds ahead. I don't bother switching the nav ball to orbit mode, it'll do so by itself when you leave the atmosphere, and the stability that prograde flight in surface mode offers, up until about 35 kms or so, greatly helps getting even iffy designs up without too much problems. The starting angle right of the Launchpad kinda depends on whether it's top-heavy and how fast the acceleration is; if it accelerates fast or is very stable, you'll need a bit more angle to start with, if it's slow or top heavy, a bit less is good. I'm sure there's more efficient ways, but this works for me and it's pretty easy.
