  1. Well they're not actually being sacrificed, more like they're expendable assets ... megots 2 Kerbals on the surface and 78 in orbit aboard various ships so one or two heading to the big Kraken in the sky won't affect the mission success one bit as I can still achieve what I intended with 2 less Kerbals if they die on the way down to Dres
  2. So I uploaded a video of what I have in orbit of Dres so far ... Still waiting for the WITQ-1 but I'm a bit Dres'd out (check the video and you will see what I mean) It's about 2 minutes long and starts to get interesting around 51 second in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBAU9OxsBNk
  3. Yup, just figured that out last night I'm currently working on my Rod of the Kraken and will post my entry soon.. I parked a Skycrane + Rover at the KSC flag and that will be my target ... I figure if I can hit it it there will be a big ball of fire
  4. So I haven't really done much but I figured I'd post a short video that shows the convoluted mess that I have created around Dres It's about 2 minutes long and IMO gets interesting around 51 seconds in https://youtu.be/DBAU9OxsBNk
  5. Salutations ... I bid welcome to our brother from down under
  6. 7/10 ... tends to cause collateral damage Star Forge up
  7. Just be sure to have enough RCS or put a bunch of vernors on so you can land safely ... Dres is a real [REDACTED] to drive on with rovers
  8. Fantastic ... That is actually the target of my mega-mission I currently have 12 lander probes on-board a mother ship currently orbiting Dres with 37 on-board another monstrosity that en route to Dres capture burn ... 49 landers in total
  9. Check the Kerbal wiki, although Gilly is considered a captured asteroid so wouldn't have craters methinks
  10. Which is why there isn't a scoring deal ... Each planet/moon have their own level of difficulty in regards to completing this challenge so scoring is really a moot point
  11. I am in the middle of a mega-mission to a lonely and under appreciated planet. The mission I cooked up to show some love involves multiple objectives and this challenge is based on one of those objectives. You can find my Mission Report log HERE OBJECTIVE: The premise is simple, pick a planet or moon that you can land on and chart all the craters on it by planting a flag or landing a probe in each crater (or any combination of the two) And just to be clear, either a flag or a probe has to remain at the landing location in each crater ... you can send a myriad of remote probes, a Kerbaled rover or even a Kerbaled jump ship that bounces from crater to crater but there has to be something left in each crater to mark that you have been there NOTE: The Kerbal wiki will be the default reference in regards to the amount of craters on each planet/moon that would need to be marked. Using Dres for example, it is documented in the wiki that she has 42 known craters with a possible 5 additional ones so for Dres you would have to mark 42 craters to be recognized ... As for the 5 other craters that may be on Dres, well kudos to you if you can chart them. Also the wiki could be wrong and should be used only for reference. A better way would be to start a sandbox game, go to your tracking center, take a look at the celestial body you want to chart in the tracking center and start counting what looks like craters ... The biome maps can be a bit misleading with the colour tones they use to differentiate between zones In addition to this, if the celestial body you choose to chart doesn't have information in the wiki about the amount of craters it has then we shall come up with a reasonable number ourselves ... That could even end up creating challenges between individuals within this challenge NOTE: Captured asteroids are not moons RULES FOR ENTRY: 1- Wheatons Law 2- No Hyperedit or cheats 3- Screenshots (preferably with info panes visible) or it didn't happen ... Lots of them 4- You must start a Mission Report log to document your mission. NOTE: I would like to keep this thread from turning into everyone's mission report in one thread so please use this thread for discussion and not your primary record of your mission ... Although feel free to post periodic updates here about your progress with a link to your Mission Report log. 5- An imgur account is strongly recommended as it is expected that many screenshots be taken with info panes visible ... This isn't so much for providing proof that the challenge was completed according to the rules but more to see how each person who takes up the challenge approaches the objective. As a retired electro-mechanical engineer/specialist from the aerospace industry, I find it fascinating to observe the differences (and similarities) between how individuals approach a mission objective with the same tools at their disposal, which is why I'm trying to keep the rules to a minimum. 6- 1 flag or 1 probe must be present in each crater to mark your passage MODS: Use any mod you care to, just know that if the mod you use adds parts to the game then you are automatically put into the Neapolitan (modded) division regardless of if you use the parts or not ... dems da rules Any mod that adds functionality above and beyond what you find in the stock game automatically puts you in the Neapolitan (modded) division Autopilot mods ... definitely not by the seat of your pants Visual enhancements, Chatterer etc ... if it doesn't add parts or change physics then by the seat of your pants DIVISIONS: There will be 2 main divisions for this challenge, By the seat of your pants (no mods that change physics or add parts) and Neapolitan (Modded). An additional minor division, The Kiddies Table, is for entries that don't meet the requirements of the challenge or don't contain the information needed to determine if the challenge was completed (this is so that anyone who wants to try this can be recognized for their efforts) ... Hopefully I have been concise enough in creating this challenge that those who take it up will follow the spirit of it and provide the information required to be recognized in the 2 main divisions. NOTE: There is also The Order of Cartographer Kings which is for those who dare to chart every crater in the Kerbol system ... Good luck with that ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -By the seat of your pants (no mods that change physics or add parts) - - -Neapolitan (Modded) Dres - Nefrums ... Cost: Weight: Part Count: ... Sent a crater hopping lander with ISRU's and plotted 43 Craters - -The Kiddies Table (Minor Division) Mun - Foxster ... Cost: $308,912 Weight: 188.5t Part count: 110 ... First to complete the challenge by sending 9 probes to the Mun - -The Order of Cartographer Kings - - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Finally, this challenge is open to anyone who wants to try it and they can do it in any way they see fit but remember that if you put an entry in and it's not within the scope of the rules or you aim to be deceitful with your entry then it's the Kiddies Table for you. One more thing ... Do your research before you make claims as it was stated that there are only 9 craters listed for the Mun on the wiki in the biome list, however using the biome map for the mun I can count well over 60
  12. 10/10 ... anything involving the answer to life, the universe and everything is ok in my books I'd buy that for a dollar
  13. Question ... Mods? Another question ... how did you plan to determine the distance from target after impact? I fail to understand how you can measure this accurately ... I must be missing something here
  14. Just a couple questions ... how does the weight multiplier factor into the scoring equation? ... is this for 1.0.5? I may have to take a shot at this once I understand how your scoring equation works and which version you intended it for
  15. Just an update on my progress so far .... The MK2 and the Party Bus Express didn't have enough fuel to make it to Dres. As a result, the 4 Drop Ships and the 12 SComs attached to the MK2 as well as the Party Buses on the Party Bus Express were detached and individually flown to Dres, however, the Drop Ships didn't have enough fuel to make it either so the rovers inside were detached and individually flown to Dres All rovers and Party Buses as well as the Rainbow Brite made it to Dres orbit (80 Kerbals) and 2 of the rovers have landed (although one of them 'crash' landed but the scientist survived) The SCom network is online (Ground Scanning ComSat) ... 4 of the 12 SComs were damaged and rendered inoperable due to myself trying to be slick with a refueling in LKO before I sent the convoy to Dres so there are 8 SComs in the network The Rainbow Brite achieved polar orbit and has completed a surface scan of Dres as well as deploying her ComSat network (it is missing ComSat #7 which is aboard the WITQ-1) The WITQ-1 (What Is The Question) is on a Dres intercept course with plenty of fuel to achieve orbit The Party Buses will have no problem reaching the surface safely but the two remaining rovers do not have the fuel to make it down safely so the idea is for both the rovers to rendezvous with the most convenient Party Bus and have the crew transfer vessels. The problem is that there are no more seats left on any of the Party Buses so the 2 scientists are gonna have to hold on to a ladder on the way down Anyways, my mission report can be found HERE
  16. Matfield Kerman has landed his rover in one piece on Dres ... just barely though Unfortunately I don't think the other 2 rovers will make it down to the surface without serious risk to life as they do not have the fuel and will likely crash into the surface. However, I have a plan that might work .... Looks like there is gonna be a couple hitchhikers to be picked up by one or two of the party buses and they can hang onto the ladder on their way down In the meantime it looks like Martrix needs a pickup since her rover is in pieces so Imma thinkin that should be Matfield's first mission on Dres
  17. Martrix Kerman has crash landed on Dres and survived
  18. ComSat network is online ... still waiting for ComSat 7 which is on board the WITQ-1 to fill the remaining hole in the communications network
  19. The SCom network is online I think I will start setting up the communications network next ... I have 6 ComSats on the Rainbow Bright and one more on the WITQ-1 which is still almost half a year away but 6 will do till then The Party Buses should have enough fuel to land although I may use the Rainbow Brite to refuel them seeing as she has a fair amount of fuel left And the Rovers are going to be a bit of a tedious mess with a substantial risk of someone hitting the dirt hard ... It's a good thing Dres has such low gravity and that I stuffed 460 mono-propellant into each one, should be survivable
