The James Webb Space Telescope and stuff
cubinator replied to Streetwind's topic in Science & Spaceflight
From what I understand, the gases emitted by spacecraft maneuvering nearby would dirty the mirror. Hubble could close itself up while this was happening, James Webb cannot.- 869 replies

I would be interested to see the micro-scale experiment conducted. We have an actual way to determine whether this thing would act like a warp bubble. Even if it does, I'm sure scaling it up enough to be much use would be another challenge entirely. The paper itself doesn't seem to overstep its boundaries, only claiming that a mathematically similar phenomenon has been predicted and that it could be tested in a lab. The first I heard about this was a pop-sci article claiming that a warp field had already been constructed, though, which is false. So keep an eye out for misinformation regarding this study.

Can you fly a plane on a gas giant?
cubinator replied to awsumguy76801's topic in Science & Spaceflight
We sent a probe into Jupiter's atmosphere. It's definitely possible. The gas planets are all going to have really low density atmospheres, which will impact lift negatively. Flight speed or lift will have to be greater to compensate. The pressure depends on the altitude, so if you wanted to you could stay at around 1 atm. If you go too deep, the air will start to become supercritical and act more like a liquid. -

Temperature is going to be a piecewise function with different curves as you reach the various layers, like this. There are some general rules of thumb for where these layer boundaries are by latitude you can use, but they change with the weather and the seasons. Typically when writing functions like this, you can input things like current density, latitude, and temperature as parameters, so that you get a more accurate fit to the current situation. The atmosphere is always changing, and we can't fully predict it. That's just how we can make models that give us a good approximation. If you really want to, you can even just import a temperature table for your function to reference.

Some people have been doing it by buying two of the Saturn V sets - apparently most of the right pieces are there (though obviously not silver).
-
I have my Saturn V displayed on the umbilical tower. It would be cool to add a silver Starship to the collection.

Yes, but it's a bit soggy.

"Asterite" sounds like a good name for the mineral layer left behind on the entire surface of the world.

Stage 2 entered a circular orbit, coasted until reaching a point near the southern tip of South America and Antarctica, then burned to escape the Earth. The satellite was released a while later, when the spacecraft was this far from the Earth.
