  1. Potentially stupid question incoming:

How do I get the map view to show more future trajectories after the orange and purple ones? I'm trying to get captured at Jool using a Laythe gravity assist, but my game won't show my trajectory after my Laythe escape.

I figured it out last night. It turns out it WAS the patched conics slider.

  3. Around 100 newly validated K2 planets! Several of my systems (EPIC 201528828, EPIC 212157262, EPIC 228801451) have been validated as actual multi-planetary systems!

  4. Quick question: what need more Delta-v - getting a high altitude orbital capture around Moho, or a low altitude capture?

  7. Wow the Tide Pod meme also made it to the international world of the planet. Its on the dang news!

They think its for likes and views but i think its for the lolz only.

Now people can finally eat a “Tide Pod” if they want to. The problem: they’re not Tide Pods, but rather look-alikes that you can actually eat. Of course businesses would come and try to capitalize on a meme.

Oh and at least 20 people have been poisoned from purposely eating Tide Pods.

And YouTube is taking down Tide Pod challenge videos.

And people are flocking to Amazon to post their reviews on Tide Pods’ deliciousness and recipes and “weight loss benefits”.

Why can’t people do a safer meme-related challenge, like touching Papa Bear’s spaghet or helping the Ugandan Knuckles find their queen?

Happy new year everyone! It's now the year of neon's atomic mass! :D

2016: not the best for the rest of the world, but it was pretty good for me!

2017: very bad year for the world and had some terrible things I had to go through, but otherwise I found it to personally be a good year.

      2018: *apocalypse*

  14. I'm pretty sure many of you are wondering when I'm going to do another research update on the "My Exoplanet Discoveries" thread. Well, I finally have a planned date. There will be a press conference on Thursday December 14th regarding some new Kepler finds - possibly some Exoplanet Explorers stuff - and I think it would be a good idea for me to post on the EE discoveries that have been made over the last two months. Plus, if any of the candidates found by me/Cabbink/Vidar87/shutcheon/Libmar96/TonyJHoffman/Emberfire are announced or even confirmed in the press conference, I will report on that as well. In the meantime, here's the most recent find:

EPIC 248440276 Ab: A rather Earth-sized planet found by Vidar87 in K2 Campaign 14. It's at least 10% larger than Earth, orbits a small red dwarf (0.23 solar radii) every 12.102 days, and has an equilibrium temperature of at least 301 K (82 F). It seems like a good candidate for a potentially habitable planet - albeit a bit on the warm side. HOWEVER, there's a bit of a problem. It turns out the system is actually a binary, with a second red dwarf located about 0.02 arc seconds from the primary. This means that the planet is both larger and hotter, and therefore likely a non-habitable desertic world. At least it gets treated to two suns in the sky - not as cool as Tatooine's suns, but still cool.

  15. The potentially habitable planet K2-18b now has a confirmed mass and composition! This planet is 2.28 Re, 8.0 Me, and has a density of 3.7 g/cm3, which indicates a water-rich composition. In addition, a second non-transiting planet - K2-18c - was found with the HARPS spectrograph, with 7.5 times the mass of Earth and a year lasting 9 days.

Fair point. However, the size of the planet may help give rise to a more powerful magnetosphere, which - depending on the star - may better protect its surface than Proxima b. There's just so many unknowns and so many varieties of both host stars and habitable zone planets.

What about Luyten b and LHS 1140b? Both orbit VERY inactive red dwarfs - both with rotational periods of over 100 days - and likely have strong magnetospheres due to their high masses. LHS 1140b likely has a very strong magnetic field due to its iron rich composition, and receives too little light from its star to become a Venus analogue. Luyten b is around 3 Earth masses, may be in a spin-orbit resonance, and gets just 6% more sunlight than Earth. In addition, LHS 1140b is confirmed to be rocky.

  18. There is no task more tedious than cataloging EVERY SINGLE PLANET found by me, shutcheon, Vidar87, Libmar96, @Cabbink, and others. I'm not even halfway done and so far I've cataloged 72 planets in 32 systems, with 9 in the habitable zones of their stars.

I'm honestly not too sure. There are just so many stars. As of now, I have catalogued 202 planets in 113 systems, with 31 in the habitable zones of their stars. However, just because they're in the habitable zone doesn't mean they will be supportive to life.

Keep in mind that I found only about a third of those 22 habitable zone planets, and around a few dozen of the 139 total planets. Plus, there are MANY more I have yet to catalog.

15 are less than 1.50 Earth radii, 6 are between 1.5 and 2.5 Re, and one is an ice giant.
