This is a well documented glitch resulting from glitches in the terrain mapping. The devs know about it, its just not important enough to deal with the headache of fixing it.

yup, the sooner you are pointed parallel to the surface, the sooner your engines arent fighting gravity. when you are pointed straight up, your engines are sacrificing x amount of their acceleration to gravity so when the body doesnt have an atmosphere, the sooner you can point parallel, the better.

Can any plane glide unpowered? (unless it is a brick of course)
Rokker replied to iDan122's topic in Science & Spaceflight
You sure? Just about anything can land while gliding if you flare hard enough. -
Annnnnnd its official, the first Falcon 9 Heavy launch, originally set for 2014 has been delayed until "early next year."

Direct to Trans-Martian Orbit. 1 launch per payload, with an additional 2 launches per payload to support the weight of all of the BS they are carrying along with them. But yeah, 1 launch per payload direct to GMO.

The Lunar X-Prize is actually easily feasible, especially when compared to Mars One.

Indeed, to me Mars One almost feels like a really elaborate, really horrible form of darwinism, aimed at killing off people who would willingly spend their entire lives on a giant frozen desert rock being bombarded by radiation surrounded by almost no air, with no internet, limited communication, no truly serious plan for consistent resupply, no emergency plan, etc. Its like they honestly are asking to die.

Glide well, no, glide, yes. -
Should we repeal/amend the 1967 Outer Space Treaty?
Rokker replied to NASAFanboy's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Of course it has/will. Its a major reason behind the upcoming ISS year long mission and a lot of study on the effects of radiation, extended space flight, etc. are very useful. -

Indeed it does, I like to consider anything with an L/D ratio of over 1 to be gliding since in most other cases it would at least appear to be simply dropping Way to go Overly-Technical Guy who actually sorta avoided answering the actual question. -

Well, you said "most things probably can glide" -
You're not going to space today - IRL version.
Rokker replied to PDCWolf's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I assume you remembered to include the first (so far only) 3 deaths in space in that list? That method is dangerous when used for human lives. -

First man in space AND it got them the first cancelled manned lunar mission as well as millions if not billions of dollars in failed probes, satellites, rockets, etc. Whereas NASA has a much higher success rate. NASA's way of doing things has gotten us much farther than the Soviet Union. Also, you really oversimplified that explanation of how they did it. -
... uh what do you mean it wont let you? You just click the space center button and click the VAB and make a new rocket.

Rokker replied to iDan122's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Well, the shuttle could glide because, despite it having a terrible l/d ratio, it still had an l/d ratio above 1. It may not have been a good glider, but it was still a glider. However, things such as ICBM re-entry vehicles might not be considered able to glide because their l/d ratio is below 1. -
There's nothing wrong with the orbit getting changed by an encounter, it would take it to strange new places.
-
That isnt crazy, that is logical and possible. Straight up pissing out of the space craft is relatively crazy.

Granted, but it becomes so popular that millions forget to eat while playing, thereby starving due to playing Don't Starve. I wish I had a trillion dollars.
