[UNOFFICIAL/FANMADE] 0.17 Discussion Thread 2
AlternNocturn replied to kacperrutka26's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Oh yeah, I forgot how planes worked for a second. >_> Still, if you were to try to do that in real life on Venus, your oxygen breathing plane would fail since, y'know... the lack of oxygen. I was thinking about Orbiter and how hard it is to put a Delta glider into orbit around Venus. -
[UNOFFICIAL/FANMADE] 0.17 Discussion Thread 2

But wouldn't the thrust from the engines be dampened tremendously by the thick atmosphere? It could still be possible to escape, but it might require an incredible effort. -
Nice shout-out from the mars curiosity team [reddit link]

We need to convince them to put a small Jeb portrait decal (With sunglasses, of course) on one of their next projects. -
[Writing] Where the hell has this thing been?
AlternNocturn replied to leopardenthusiast's topic in KSP Fan Works
Yep, it was bound to happen. A KSP creepypasta. I liked it. Normally I don't like cliche'd and cheesy creepypasta but I enjoyed this. -
Two absolutely different games, with two absolutely different goals. Both are very fun when you know what you're doing.

I changed my mind about my original plan. My new plan: big rockets and lots of luck and good timing.

I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I'm trying to calculate tH first, but every time I put the numbers in, I don't get the same numbers that you do! I thought it was tH = 3.14 (sqrt(13500000+40500000)^3/8(1.167922e9)) but I keep getting the wrong answer. Then I put it into a calculator proper and I get an entirely different answer, which is also wrong! It's not jsut that either, I keep getting wrong answers for all of them! Help!!! If I can't figure this out, I'm going to have to rely on MechJeb to do my transfers. This is impossible for me.

In one of Scott Manley's videos (szyzyg as he's known on the Youtubes), he boosts the orbit of a lone Kerbal from one ship in orbit to another in orbit. After he performed that maneuver, I very quickly realized how similar it was to going to another planet: The Kerbal being the spacecraft and the two vehicles being the planets. The best part about that video, he included the math required to perform such a maneuver, so once I have a very good interplanetary vehicle, I'll be studying the math behind that up until planets come out.

Future-proofing, I think. People like to add little things to their rockets to make them seem more like real vehicles, so we get the aesthetic stuff before there's a use for them. Mod packs have been doing that for ages.

Kerbal Space Program For Steam Greenlight?
AlternNocturn replied to GamerGuy09's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I love Steam as a service (Killer sales, lots of useful features, very unintrusive DRM, achievements system, community features, auto-updating, etc. etc.), but I don't think KSP would work on that platform, even when it's fully completed. I really don't see what KSP can gain from being on Steam. Achievements would be a bit silly, and I don't really think I'll be using the overlay for anything. Although if you want KSP on Steam for the overlay, add it to your library as a non-Steam game. You won't get achievements or time spent playing and it won't be recorded on your account, but you do get the convenience of Steam and the overlay. -
The thread for all things Curiosity related
AlternNocturn replied to zombiphylax's topic in The Lounge
I got invited to the NASA Tweetup to see it launch, now I get to watch it land. I'm so excited. -
As it is right now, I really like the Anvil I. Attach some SRBs and a "Centaur stage" within the upper shroud, instant interplanetary mission. I'll be using this when planets come out next update. My only problem with the Anvil I, of course, is the fact that the shrouds don't work with radial symmetry. Besides that, really good rocket, looking forward to the other Anvil launch vehicles.

How did you find out about Kerbal Space Program
AlternNocturn replied to Grand Lander's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I can\'t remember, although I probably saw someone mention it on a forum. What I do remember is when I saw the name, I thought, 'a game about building a space rockets!? Gimme!', looked it up, downloaded it (forgot what version it was, it was the one right before struts came out), and suddenly it appeared on my personal 'best games of all time' list. Bought the game as soon as it went premium. -
Here\'s what I did just now as a proof of concept using the Anvil I mod rocket and some KW parts (3x 1m fuel tank and the most powerful 1m engine). There needs to be three phases of burn (and I do mean phases, multiple stages may be involved in each phase). One phase to take off from the surface of Kerbin, which could be SRBs and LFEs, 'heavy configuration' with crossfeeding parallel fuel tanks, anything to get out of the atmosphere. Second phase is to get to orbit, obviously. The third phase is to do the transfer. The rocket needs to get mostly out of the atmosphere before the orbital stage is initiated. Then the orbital phase needs to put the ship into an orbit, and the transfer phase needs to have enough fuel to accelerate to escape velocity and put the apoapsis at the required distance. There has to be a clean break between each phase, for example you can\'t complete the orbit with the transfer stage or you won\'t have enough fuel. This is how I did it, you could also use teh Orbital Construction mod to build a big rocket in orbit and send it on its way.

To Mech-Jeb or not to Mech-Jeb, that is the question...
AlternNocturn replied to Vostok's topic in KSP1 Mods Discussions
Sometimes I like to alternate. I\'ll fly ships manually for several launches, then when I get bored I\'ll start using MechJeb rockets for several launches, then when I get bored of THAT then I\'ll go back to making and flying ships without it. There are only two types of missions where I always, always use MechJeb, and that\'s for cargo missions and satellite deployments. I used to use it for rendezvous before I actually performed one manually. MechJeb is a very useful learning tool. Without it, I would never have known how to do that rendezvous manually. -
Notice the words above it say 'Caution'. I think the traditional yellow and black stripes looked tacky on the new capsule since it\'s supposed to be really futuristic so C7 made his own caution indicator.

So, when I try to build a rocket with the new larger parts, my rockets tend to be unstable and hard to control. They wobble a lot, so much so in fact that one of my rockets shook itself to pieces just from the force of the vectoring engines during my gravity turn. The impression I\'m getting from the new parts is that they\'re far from finished. There\'s not even an SAS scaled for the new parts. Which is understandable since they had a lot to do in just a short time that they just couldn\'t get them done in time. That\'s perfectly fine, but I think I\'ll hold off on using the new engines, command pod and fuel tanks for now. They look really good, and are very well made, but I\'m pretty sure that they\'re going to be very hard to use until the team works on them a bit more. I really do appreciate the work you guys at Squad do and I\'m still extremely grateful the new parts even made it in at all.

I\'m going to go skydiving. On the Mun. Jeb will be first, of course.
-
I\'ve had stable orbits near 2km, perfectly equatorial. I was looking for Munoliths.

So I just got a really cool idea. For those of us on here that have fictional aerospace agencies, why don\'t we make Google+ pages for them? We could post mission status updates or show off our latest reliable launch vehicles for getting to Minmus or the Mun. Then we could all circle each other and do hangouts or something. And as a bonus, if anyone were to stumble upon our little community and start sharing our posts, boom, publicity. I\'m not sure exactly what I\'m going to do with my agency, but I\'m sure I\'ll come up with stuff as I play. So who\'s with me? NOTE: If you have a Google account, chances are you already have a G+ account as well. If you don\'t want to use Google+ personally, you could just ignore your personal profile and make the G+ page. EDIT: Random question: is the name Nexus Aerospace already taken?
-
Nice! I had my first Stock-only Minmus landing when .15 came out, but I used a tutorial to get there. Congrats on getting there on your own!
-
Yes. Yes. YES! I have ideas for this. Grand, wonderful ideas. I\'m talking mini shuttles dispensed from the main craft. I\'m talking ships that can drop up to three or more manned rovers at a time. I\'m talking building a Mun base by dropping each part from orbit, from the same craft. My mind is running wild with ideas. ???

[STOP PRESS] Ballmer could have actually DONE SOMETHING WELL!
AlternNocturn replied to thorfinn's topic in The Lounge
'It\'s like a laptop only without a keyboard.' Yeah, that\'s what the Windows XP tablet was when it was released earlier this decade, before Steve Jobs even had the idea for the iPad. Microsoft is half competing with Apple, half making their older tablet PCs more accessible and easier to use for everyone with an actual Tablet interface built-in to the OS. Also, about Windows 8, let\'s be honest, it\'s for touchscreens only, which is why the only way I\'m going to actually use Win8 is through the Surface. It doesn\'t quite belong on desktops despite the fact that you\'ll be spending pretty much the whole time in the desktop interface. Personally if the specs an price are good, I\'ll be getting the Pro version. I\'ve been looking for a reason to justify getting a tablet and the Surface is the perfect thing. -
I have to admit, this thread caused me to do a bit more research on gimbals since I really love learning about gyroscope-based mechanisms. I\'m really glad our gimbals are quaternion since launching rockets in this game with anything else would be a lot more frustrating.

I thought the dev team already conquered the Kraken.
