Got my stock mission to the Mun & back into orbit, but didn't have time for the rendezvous & docking with the command module

Is there a possibility for full on reusability.
Cavscout74 replied to OPBlue's topic in KSP1 Mods Discussions
No the one I was referring to was on Kerbin. It was a 2 stage rocket, with both stages recovered, re-stacked & refueled and a new payload brought out & attached. The person who did it even had a gif of it on the signature block -
As usual, I started missing the little green folks after a while, and did a little messing around again today. Tried to slap together an Apollo style Mun mission, but ran out of time before I finished it. Been a long time since I played stock

Cavscout74 replied to OPBlue's topic in KSP1 Mods Discussions
There was someone on here that did it stock, had a nice video and everything. I don't remember who it was, and it was well over a year ago -
Start with all the "dumb" reasons - Do you have either a pilot or probe core? Does the probe core have power? Does the probe core have a good communications link? Does the rover have either RCS or reaction wheels? At one point or another I've missed pretty much every one of those

I actually fired up KSP for the first time in a while, tinkered with some of the new EVA gear, then a quick round of golf: On the negative side, shortly after taking this image, the rover decided it was done with the laws of physics and started rotating in place with no control input & despite the brakes being set. I guess some things don't change

I have used Thuds attached to a decoupler (and set to allow fuel flow) to mimic the Atlas stage and a half, but it hardly qualifies as a replica. I also use a mod engine for the sustainer engine, usually a Valiant from Restock Plus. Sometimes I'll add Spiders or Twitches to mimic the verniers

What kind of launch vehicles do you like to use?
Cavscout74 replied to skrpt kddz's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Primarily expendable launchers. I used to use a lot of reusables, but got tired of having to land them. The breaking point was after lofting a large set of craft for a Jool mission, I had 10 boosters to deorbit & land (I'd also forgotten 2 or so from prior missions). I use a fair number of spaceplanes for crew transfer as well - late career, I tend to build several good size ships to take crews back & forth to the other planets, and have spaceplanes to handle the crews at Kerbin (and Laythe) -
I rebuilt my old wheeled command vehicle into a tracked version that handles much better & built a tracked rescue & firefighting vehicle from scratch to replace my wheeled version All-Terrain Rescue Vehicle - Tracked (ATRV-T) Can reach over 120kmh on land & 46 kmh on water (compared to 95 kmh & 25 kmh for the original 6-wheel ATRV), holds about 1800 liters of water for fire fighting and can carry 2 crew, 5 passengers & 1 casualty in a medical bed Mobile Command Vehicle (MCV) Featuring an electric drive powered by a turbine-generator installation, capable of roughly 100 kmh on land and about 24 kmh on water.

In my experience, you get a few tourists that want to do solar trips, but most still want Mun/Minmus. I usually either combine the handful of solar orbit tourists with crew training flights or screen the contracts carefully & avoid those. When you go to any other planet, that's what really opens up the flood gates of tourists going further away.

That's what I thought I would be doing, many years ago. Good luck & study hard

totm march 2020 So what song is stuck in your head today?
Cavscout74 replied to SmileyTRex's topic in The Lounge
The stupid theme song to "Secret Life of Pets 2" We have an 18mo old in the house and that is his favorite movie to watch. Again. And Again. And.... you get the picture -
broken wheels/landing struts: has it ever happened?
Cavscout74 replied to king of nowhere's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Had it happen more than once. I feel like they've made the wheels a little tougher at some point, because it hardly ever happens now. Most memorable wheel breakage was my first ever landing on Laythe, found a reasonably flat area to set a spaceplane down on - it was a modified version of @XLjedi's Star Ranger - and it turned out to not be as flat as I thought on the fly over. I broke all three landing gear, but I had an engineer on board so it wasn't a problem. I was just thrilled I finally landed on Laythe without explosions -
Found out what the ocean looks like when your map wind overlay is all red: Also, I guess that wave-piercing hull design works

In addition to secret projects, even non-secret operations that people don't understand cause plenty of UFO sightings. Several years ago, I was watching some UFO conspiracy show once with my dad (yes it really was the best thing on tv at the time) and there was a guy on it describing seeing weird lights in the desert, like a ring of sparks that suddenly appeared, then took off and disappeared. He even drew a sketch of what he thought he saw - and admittedly, his sketch and description sounded pretty far out there. Along with the story of the hidden UFO base under the desert. Except I had also recently gotten out of the army and my last duty station was in the California desert where I often participated in night helicopter insertions. Guess what happens when a bunch of sand gets kicked up & rotors swing though it? A fairly bright ring of sparks at the rotor tips. Looks a lot like what this guy described, and the place he described seeing it had something - VOR station, remote weather station, something, I don't recall - that might have been a reason for someone to fly a helicopter out to check on.

My guess is he had a lot of ideas but without any means to work on them, he never ran into the problems that prevent them from existing now. Wireless power - maybe. Most of the rest - science fantasy. As to your #3, the wingless flying vehicles, I don't recall - though I'm no expert - any reference to electro-magnetic craft. The only references I remember were to using bladeless turbines to make them fly. And while bladeless turbines exist, they are generally far less efficient and where they are used, they are used as pumps for fluid transport rather than propulsion. What little I do know about them, I doubt they would be capable of making anything fly. I think he was relatively sincere, just that his ideas weren't workable even if he had gotten funding. Interesting topic though, I'm curious to see what others think.

I want to land a rover on the Mun.
Cavscout74 replied to EDS_Pilot's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Basically yes. It has fuel tanks on the side for the landing engines, then a clamp-o-tron jr attached to a pair of robotic pivots that dock the rover to the cradle. Somewhere I stuck a probe core on the cradle so it could be controlled without the rover. Finally a hinge & more panels front & back for ramps. I'm not on my game computer right now but if you're interested I can probably post the design on KerbalX later. Edit: Tried it, but there are parts from multiple mods even after I tried to get rid of the non-stock parts. I'll look some more, but I know it'll be at a minimum Tweakscale & both DLC's -
I haven't tried the test version. I like the concept of the modular engines but I'm afraid the execution will annoy me. Either way, not much motivation to pour myself deep into a ship project right now It was starting to take shape, too:
-
I could take it or leave it. I'm glad they are limiting it to naval weapons and not individual weapons though. Almost every other option in the last vote was more appealing to me. I'm in a hurry for them to get out the modular engines. I have stopped work on just about everything because I see no reason to invest dozens of hours into a design only to have to rebuild it before I finish with it. Granted that could happen any time, but knowing modular engines are in testing and coming soon makes designing a diesel powered ship feel pointless right now.

Glad I could help. If I had a dollar for every silly little "oops" I've made in that game..... I could at least pay off my car, maybe not quite my house yet though. Gimme another month though. My ATRV used to have an automatic fire suppression system for the engine compartment because I wrecked it once and caught the engine on fire, but the wreck also broke the buttons to activate the manual fire suppression system. So i tested and confirmed that a burning engine heats up the surrounding area (an obvious assumption but still needed to test it), then I installed a temp probe in the engine compartment and a micro-controller to handle both the regular pump controls (for fighting fires with the water cannon) and the engine fire suppression system, with the temp being the trigger to activate. All seemed to work great and I was pretty pleased with myself. Until fighting a forest fire and suddenly my water cannon pressure dropped in half. Guess what? The forest fire was hot enough to trigger the engine fire suppression, and killing my water cannon pressure and tripling my water usage. I ended up fighting the rest of it with the hand-held fire extinguishers I had on board. Now I'm back to a manual system, but the button is mounted on the divider between the crew & engine compartments, far from anything that could be hit in a collision

It's my understanding that since they changed weather in 1.0, instead of everywhere being 5*C the ambient temp now varies, and it adds to the temp of the engines letting quite a few designs that used to work now overheat. Also, you should probably gear it so you're turning a lower rps as that still determines your fuel burn, not the throttle setting, and will also help reduce the amount of heat generated. My All-Terrain Rescue Vehicle (ATRV) runs a pair of medium diesels, each with a heat sink and usually stabilizes around 50-60*C. Also, at max speed, the engines are only turning around 10-12rps. The only time I've had an overheating problem, it was due to accidentally deleting a pipe segment. For boats I don't usually bother with radiators or heat sinks, I just route the coolant through fluid ports in the bottom of the hull so you have a continuous flow of fresh coolant in & all the hot out. You shouldn't need pumps unless you are moving the fluids long distances (>10m IIRC)

Pretty sad when your employer tries to do something nice but is so screwed up they can't even get it right. I came into work today to find a nice, framed certificate sitting on my desk, recognizing my 15 years of service to the company. Really makes me want to say "Thanks guys, but you do realize I've only actually been here 13 years & 2 months? " If you wanted to add the first time I worked here & got laid off, that would only bring it to 14 years. At least they haven't posted a job opening for a deceased employee without telling their coworkers the missing employee was deceased first. Oh wait, they did that too....

What a small world - I was also home sick from elementary school, although I was dozing when it happened. And yes, the shuttle is the one I identify with the most as its what was flying while I grew up.
