I have taken into account many of the problems you stated. The craft is actually decently aerodynamic and the blades are at their current settings for testing purposes. I do suspect it will need more Wheesleys as it takes a few moments to get up to speed after the Wheesleys reach their Maximum thrust. As for mass the craft is currently only 400 tons and now has two of these turboprops, I'll probably be able to finish it up tommorow, we'll just have to see how well it turns out! It's true, even empty those fuel tanks are pretty darn heavy. Cargo bays are actually quite a bit lighter, but they don't look nearly as smooth. However as I stated before the craft is currently doing fine for thrust, it has a thrust to weight of ~.9 currently, although in practice that will be lower.
-
I've always wanted to make an aircraft in the style of the Stipa-Caproni, and given my recent interest in turboprops, today I decided to make a big'un. This WIP currently has a single large turboprop that produces a massive 1850 kN of thrust, the engine is powered by a mere 4 Wheesleys, which together only produce 480 kN of thrust. The turboprop has a specific impulse of nearly 40500, making it over three times as efficient as a goliath. Theoretically once this craft is finished it could have unprecedented range.

Actually no, there were no cheats active. The reason there are no explosions is because that image was taken the exact frame that the craft flew apart, this isn't due to incredible timing on my part, the game was just frozen on that frame for several minutes, 2000+ parts will do that. Interestingly, in that frame the craft technically hadn't broken apart yet. This is evidenced by the spaghettified struts still connecting the parts. I assume that occurs every time a craft undergoes RUD.

UMMM, I don't have hack gravity on but my Pelican is floating away.... Help! OH GOOD LORD
-
Managed to get a lot of work done on my Boeing Pelican Today. The entire tail section is now finished, and overall I think the craft is coming along nicely. This beast is currently sitting at 1320 tonnes and 1320 parts, I swear that's a coincidence.
-
Was working on my Boeing Pelican when I realised that the front looks like a mouth with buck teeth without the nosecone. honestly, I think it's kind of disturbing.
-
So I've already built the turboprop that my Boeing Pelican is going to use. Ultimately 4 of these are going to power the ekranoplan. Just for kicks I decided to compare that turboprop with the little propeller biplane I built the other day. And... well It really puts things into perspective.
-
Testing my first ever prop-plane in the thick fogs of Eve. considering this thing only goes 30 m/s, I think it's safe to say I won't make it home for supper. EDIT: I forgot to actually post a picture, I guess I just expected people to use their imaginations.
-
Was doing some work on my Boeing Pelican when... well KSP apparently forgot that gravity and drag exists. EDIT: And not ten seconds later
-
It's only just dawning on me what I've gotten myself in to. So I'm making the Boeing Pelican ULTRA, a concept cargo Ekranoplan that would have been 120 meters long with a 150 meter wingspan. The nose alone has taken about 9 hours of work. The craft is already 964 tonnes and 784 parts. This craft will also be powered by stock turboprops. I'm not sure if I'm gonna make it out alive.
-
Started work on a new cargo "aircraft", the main cargo hold is now done. Ya think it's big enough?
-
Well, I don't see how using a glitch is equivalent to just straight up cheating. A lot of designs that people make exploit the physics and aerodynamics weirdnesses in the game.
-
I wouldn't be so sure! I made an optimized craft that utilizes the Ladder Drive, it is capable of surviving atmospheric reentry, has a seat for time warping, carries a full compliment of scientific equipment, and has sufficient TWR to land on low gravity moons. With further optimization It could also land on larger moons like the Mun, and maybe even worlds like moho. Here it is on Minmus. The craft is controlled via a probe core which is supplied by an RTG Here it is taking off. The only issues right now is that the thrust isn't perfectly in line with the rest of the spacecraft. However, I've found that for this specific issue having the Kerbal climb downwards rather than upwards produces much more centered and even thrust.
-
Ladder Drive update! Apparently the Kerbal doesn't even have to be moving in order to produce the effect. As long as the Kerbal's head is pressed against part of your spacecraft it will produce thrust. However the amount of thrust produced is very low
-
Just found a super OP glitch, just have your vessel set to whatever direction to wish, get a Kerbal out, and have them climb up or down a ladder that is blocked by part of your spacecraft, the Kerbal will magically propel your spacecraft. Why get out and push when you can exploit Kraken physics? Notice the decreasing orbital velocity. EDIT: Physics warp does not increase the rate of the effect, so when you go to 2x physics warp the acceleration generated by this glitch is halved, the effect balances out. And, yes I'm exploiting this for a craft that ran out of fuel. EDIT: This effect produces exactly 1 m/s^2 of acceleration, this roughly equals 2.7 kN of thrust, although I don't think the thrust is relevant, as I highly doubt the acceleration being 1 m/s^2 is a coincidence. Likely this is the acceleration of a Kerbal on a ladder. If this is the case than this effect may occur independent of the vessel mass, obviously creating the potential for enormous vessels to be propelled entirely by a single kerbal. Will have to do further testing, but for now I need to get Ferry and Gerdorf back home using this Kerbal powered K-Drive! Edit: Even if the acceleration is reduced on larger vessels, the applications of this glitch are still numerous. A vessel carrying scientific equipment utilizing this glitch could land on every moon smaller than the Mun in the Kerbal system. The ability to set the vessel's SAS to point at whatever necessary node or marker makes this glitch extremely practical to use, to the point where it's similar to using a regular rocket engine, only without the ability to throttle.
-
Hoh yeah! I was experimenting with a turboprop design when this happened, the glitch only occurs when the prop reaches max speed, so it can be turned on and off simply by throttling the engines, I believe this glitch is because of scatterer, although I've never experienced anything like this before. The glitch is shockingly consistent, even after reloading the game.
-
I feel like I'm getting a contact high from this
-
I just wanted to make a turboprop.... I didn't ask for any of this
-
@DeltaDizzy I'ma do more experimenting first... This is glorious though, Probably has something to do with scatterer.
-
I'M FREAKING OUT THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT A NORMAL I'm serious, this effect only happens when this craft is turned on... I think I've accidentally made my first glitch machine

Thank you so much! The high part count is pretty unfortunate, I could easily cut it in half just by replacing the engines with regular goliaths, I'm not sure if anybody would be interested in that or not. -

Get ready for lag! Oh and don't forget about the part about Unbreakable Joints, unless you want to witness the most violent rapid unplanned disassembly you'll ever see. Fly safe friend! -

Oh no! There are absolutely no modded or DLC or altered parts on any of my craft. My craft use entirely stock parts, with stock stats and stock textures, and entirely built with the stock vessel builder. Hence the words "Full Stock". Also don't worry about being a newbie, I've been playing the game less than a year myself, I started playing it only this last summer. -

Considering the stuff I make? I think about that mod ALL the time, but I want to keep my craft 100% stock so I don't intend to use it. This craft is built very modularly so it would be extremely easy to part weld it. Glad you like the craft BTW! -

Why thank you! I've reached the stage where literally no part count scares me anymore, and I can't tell if that's a detriment or an advantage.
