Okay guys, I'm bringing it back! I love air races and you people haven't made one in awhile so... I beat my own high score on this one. 3:14, enjoy.

10 Million Fund Career Speedrun
ralanboyle replied to Ksp Slingshooter's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I'm slowly working on this. Can we get more info about your completion? You didn't share any of your missions. -
SSTOs don't have to be big and hard to fly! Make an SSTO that can also fly under the R&D bridge. Challenge 1. Take off from runway 09-27 2. Reach Orbit 3. Fly under the bridge. Rules: No decoupling. Aircraft but remain undamaged. No Part Mods No Physics Mods No Autopilot Extras: Wrong Way - Do it Westbound Its Cold - Polar Orbit First Things First - Fly Under the Bridge First I Got Lost - Fly under the Island Hanger instead and land there Party Bus - Take 4+ Kerbals Finishers RAlanBoyle xxx xxx Here's Mine.

I'm not sure what my duties are as judge, but I say extra points for the spin breaking from hypersonic to subsonic. -
Crater lake express

Okay, those are some fast airplanes but I went a little more "Kerbalesque." I'm not sure if we are timing to touchdown or full stop. So touchdown is 10:33 and full stop is 10:41. With practice, I bet I could do sub-9 minutes. Sorry the audio is weird, I noticed after posting and can't be bothered to fix it. -
Alright then, I'll do it: Here is 4.

Okay, here you go. Its a 2 stage vehicle. Booster stage is VTOL SSTO, with propulsive landing at KSC. Ship is a 2 crew Space-plane with glide landing on the runway.

Hey, reusable ship challenges are always fun and I will probably submit an entry. I see you are new, welcome! Since this challenge can be completed in so many different ways you might consider a scoring system or a number of medals. Here are a few examples from other challenges: Cheapest, most crew capacity, all stages return to KSC, lightest, no parachutes, single stage, etc. Generally, people either apply a numeric value to things like this or they make up some silly reward for them. Like, most Crew Capacity earns either 50 points or, a Gold Star... Just a suggestion; again, welcome.

Okay okay, We've done the SSTO challenges and the races around the world. But how about a staged/relay race? How many times can get a single ship around Kerbin, landing back at (or near) KSC after each orbit? Just take off in any ship you want, orbit, then land at (or near) KSC. Then do it again in the same ship without refueling, then do it again, and again... maybe again... Rules: This is a single ship challenge, no docking, or switching ships. I know lots of people are bad at landing on the runway, don't worry about that. Just land close to KSC, this keeps the distance traveled level for everyone. Also, as a nod to those who are landing impaired; no need to come to a stop, touch-and-goes are fine. This is NOT an SSTO challenge, stage all you want. No Parts mods or physics mods, DLC is fine. Videos are always best. If you are doing screenshots, you need to show your fuel and staging in each orbit and at each landing. Hall of Fame: (1) Amateur Hour ... (2) Want a Cookie? ... Check your staging (don't do it)

So, I have an SSTA... kinda feels like that breaks this challenge. So maybe a "No ISRU" rule? -
I am quite sure I can do much better but I've run out of time for today. I believe my score is 400. Launch from KSC: 15 pts Reach LKO orbit: 50 pts Crewed (with safe return): 40 pts Enter Munar SOI: 35 pts Enter Minmus SOI: 45 pts Leave Kerbin SOI: 40 pts Mun orbit: 20 pts Minmus orbit: 15 pts Crewed Minmus landing: 40 pts Cross Duna orbit: 100 pts

So, you explained the scoring but you never said what the goal is. What is the challenge?

Got it, I didn’t know they fixed the bug.

Just use the air intake bug to achieve a super high suborbit then use fuel drain the reach orbit. Should be doable.

Alright, I got to 1.22. I'm pretty sure I can get above 2 but I probably won't bother unless this heats up.

I think the math is off by some % because it is always wrong but the error increase with distance. So it generally worked better with closer transfers to bodies with bigger gravity wells. So Mun worked okay, but Minmus did not. Also, gravity wells are bigger so it actually takes less DV than usual to orbit once you do intercept.

I have to say, I hope more people try this challenge. It is harder than I expected. KSP has taught me a lot about orbital mechanics and this takes it to a whole new level, because the whole "Bodies on Rails" thing really messes with physics!

Alright, I've finished. When I set out I expected this to be tough because of the size of the ships needed to fight gravity. As it turned out, it was tough because of the size ships needed to overcome the inefficiencies in orbital transfers... Those transfers are goofy! I've edited the experience into 4 videos. I did it in 19 Launches, 17 are documented. I left out a tourist trip to Duna and one to Mun because they were identical to the ones in the videos and nobody has time for that. Also, the last launch isn't needed but I wanted to build and SSTO. I think my total is 2500. Part 1: Start Up https://youtu.be/-e2du9u4pxY Part 2: Mun/ Minmus https://youtu.be/GyyNwHjD0hg Part 3: Mun/ Minmus/ Duna/ Ike https://youtu.be/nln0rphaVXY Part 4: Duna/ Ike/ Eve/ Gilly/ Jool 5/ SSTO https://youtu.be/1pegMQ7plRQ

I felt like this really needed a pace time. So here you go 17:10. Also, I ran this several times and found over heating to be a major issue.

Yes, my design can be run more efficiently, and it now has but I moved on to other challenges and can't be bothered to make a new video...
-
Alright, Goliathud 1 Weighs 149T, but she has 756 m/s dv left at orbit.
-
Yeah, this will be a fun opportunity to do direct “straight” transfers. Maybe with Distant Object Enhancement I can just snipe a planet... it’ll have to wait though since I’m doing the double gravity challenge now, then I plan to do the real time career run... I am on a month long work trip with lots of down time so...
-
Sooooo, obviously it is possible to hit all of the bodies (though some, like Gilly, will take forever in real time, and some boss level sniping). Is there a scoring system or other goal?
-
Thanks for this. I was just going to guess but this'll speed things up.
