I no longer use two monitors, but I do use a monitor so wide I have KSP running 1440p and can have my browser open beside it. Would love to have the map view separate. However, this would even further increase the divide between console and PC. And console players have been treated very poorly regarding updates. Would hope to see KSP2 giving them more love or design the game in such a way that updates for them can get released easier.

But since KSP2 will have multiplayer, this opens up the idea of a "mission control" role in multiplayer. Players 1,2,3 can't access map view, Player 4 can only access map view and is in communication with the other three, coordinating them to rendezvous or tells them when to point their rockets where and how long to throttle etc.

Definitely would not be everybody's cup of tea but I could imagine it being fun when playing together.

Yes, every new feature adds potential new pitfalls in development. There's no way around it. That's why good product managers /product owners prioritize their backlog based on what will yield the highest impact on the market. We'll see whether or not this will make it.

But it's fun contemplating it and having a discussion around it :)

i could care less about the console version. Why, after alllllllllll the trouble porting to console in KSP1, would they even, for a split second, consider KSP2 on console? Money! thats the only reason. It means nothing but trouble down the line. Ive said it before and ill say it again DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!

"mission control" If its web-based then anyone can simply goto player 4 web address (permissions) and all can see the same map and tracking and telemetry

If its web based you could have the map on a cell phone or tablet. All im saying is for people with one screen the map will look the same but if you have more than one screen give us the abilty to "pop-out" (undock/resize) the map and drag it to another screen.

I dont see this adding anything to the game beyond more room for technical debt. Its just more complexity and more code to maintain. Not only that, for users like me who dont use multiple monitors youd be forcing bloated code on us. How much idk. My opinion ofc.

forcing bloated code on you in what way? If you dont want a undocked map view then dont use the damm thing. If you worried about a couple more lines of code to undock a window your computer prolly wont run the game anyways. Oh Hey Mr Dev guys. Yeah ummmm AlamoVampire cant run the game on his 10 year old computer. Would you guys mind dumbing down the game and leaving out some features because some of us, for whatever reason, choose to run your new state-of-the-art game on a dinosaur computer? Thanks

bottom line is this. It will have multiplayer. If you dont want it then dont use it. If it has multimonitor support if you dont want it then dont use it. Why would you sit here and type out, in front of god and everybody, reasons to not add features to the game? Features mind you that you dont have to use BTW. Why would you advocate for that? If you cant use it then nobody should be able to use it? If its all about efficiency well then lets just get the devs to make atari's "pong". I have since 2011 never understood your way or others that advocate for same thing, reasons to dumb down the game. They did that with KSP1 multiplayer and here you guys are trying to do it with KSP2. I got news for you guys. Nate Simpson comes off (to me anyways) as a guy that will push the coding envelope. I have a feeling he will cram as much believable, realistic stuff into KSP2 as he can possibly do so i guess you guys will be the first ones crying in the support threads "KSP2 keeps crashing!" Right? Or on steam giving the bad reviews. Get with the times man!

We want to share an update for all of our Kerbal Space Program fans: We will now be releasing Kerbal Space Program 2 in Fall 2021.

As you all know, we’ve been working hard to make the best and most authentic KSP sequel possible. This is an ambitious goal. We are making a big, expansive game loaded with new features, but doing so will take longer than we previously anticipated. With everything going on in the world today due to the COVID-19 outbreak, we’re facing many unique challenges that require more time to safely iterate, create, test, and make KSP2 as great as it can be. We understand this isn’t the news you were hoping to see, but ultimately we need to make the best decision for the development of Kerbal Space Program 2. That said, we will continue to keep you updated with more feature videos, developer blogs, and other content to share our progress from now up to launch.

We appreciate everyone who has been on this journey with us, we really can’t wait to be flying alongside all of you, and we look forward to sharing more along the way. Safe launches to all the Kerbonauts out there and stay tuned!

Kerbal Space Program 2 Dev Team

what does COVID have to do with coding and testing? You guys cant code from home? You code, commit changes to repository, download and test. You can do this from home. You can teleconference any meetings. Yeah im not buying this excuse at all. There is absolutely no reason they cant develop this game from anywhere in the world with the devs in separate locations. Please dont treat us like kids like squad did. Just tell us the truth! Come on man whats the REAL reason? I bet I know! github-mark.png

  4. They did say its a complete rewrite of the code (thank god) so the code/api from KSP1 prolly wont work because the variables and methods, functions in the code will all be different. Im guessing most stock assets (not the code just the meshes and textures) will probably be carried over from KSP 1 if you look at the video. Just a guess

Pretty much this.  I suspect they're ferociously busy, and/or don't have anything in particular to share.

Bear in mind that the large majority of development time is spent on stuff that would be utterly un-interesting to anyone who's not a programmer working on the project.  Stuff that players would actually be interested in and/or be able to see (e.g. game features) tends to come later in the cycle.

Also, bear in mind that any time they want to release some info, it's not just a simple matter of "okay, take five minutes out of my day to write up a post and fire it off".  It takes a lot of prep time and decision-making before choosing to release such a thing.  It's non-trivial.

Sure, but you can't "keep the community aware" of development if the development is a bunch of stuff that would be boring and/or incomprehensible to 99%+ of the prospective audience, which is what about 99% of the work in producing software is like.

I don't think it's even slightly strange.  I think they had the "big media push" because PAX is a big deal and they wanted to have something out for that, and they put a lot of effort into getting something presentable for public consumption.

And then go dark because they're, well, busy, and also likely haven't come up with anything demo-able during that time.

You'd know because you'd be too busy to post on the forums for the time being.  :sticktongue:

Have you ever been part of a software development project?  Here's what the typical monthly update would look like:

    • "Spent weeks ironing out <list of obscure bugs, described in terms that make no sense to you>."
    • "Well, we worked on the physics calculations, and managed to optimize <gibberish> so that the <jargon> is now <cryptic number> better than <other cryptic number>."
    • "Refactored <thing you'll never see> so that <obscure internal development process> will be <better in some way that makes no sense to you unless you're a developer>."

Seriously, there's nothing interesting or readable for most of this stuff.  Ever watched a big skyscraper being built?  For the first two-thirds of the construction period, it's just "dig a big hole in the ground".  Important and labor-intensive, but not especially watchable. "Oh, today the hole got <small amount> deeper."  Software's kinda like that, too.  A few bits are very interesting to watch, but most of it isn't.

Okay, so suppose they did post an update.  There's an excellent chance that it would basically just be:

"UPDATE:  We're doing a whole bunch of programming.  The end."

There's an excellent chance that there simply isn't anything that would be at all interesting or meaningful to anyone who's not working there.

    ^ Also this.  ;)

    ^ Also this.

what this guy said. especially the part about watching a hole being dug. Im watching the SpaceX starship being built and its the same thing.....A metal <something> was attached and raised up and attached  to <some part> of the rocket Most of the work is going on inside of the ship out of view.

    Be patient guys...its coming

  6. Lol i think multiplayer is a great idea been wanting it for years. For those who dont like the idea of multiplayer 2 things:

    1: to bad

2: dont play multiplayer play single player. pretty simple huh? (You have absolutely no argument now )

Me and my friends are going to enjoy every single minute of multiplayer. You know its funny when i was asking about multiplayer in KSP1 I got all these reply's like "I should just deal with it" that KSP will NEVER have multiplayer. (Alot of the same people back then are commenting in this very thread!) Well guess what? Shoe is on the other foot now....YOU should prolly "Just deal with it!" because its coming baby! Whooo Hoooo!

  7. no no its cool i like your opinion. I do find it puzzling a little. let me explain. Over the years on this forum i was a BIG advocate for multiplayer (ksp1) I was frankly shocked by how many people were opposed to multiplayer in KSP. For various reasons mind you. Some were performance concerns some were realisim breaking concerns and some were just "leave the game alone" concerns some were "multiplayer isnt possible in KSP". My argument was "Just because it has multiplayer does not mean you have to use it just play single player." All of them were proven wrong with the luna multiplayer mod. But here we are with KSP2 now with multiplayer being developed in parallel with the game and I have not heard one negative feedback about it. I find it puzzling. Now move forward and here i am throwing out an idea about Voxel terrain. You are the second one that is opposed to it. And I understand where you are coming from. But now i find myself going back to those multiplayer discussions back in the day and thinking hummmm What if? But thanks for you honest comments. Good conversation. Thanks

Voxel/editable terrain would be pretty neat, but it would definitely be beyond the scope of what they're planning of KSP2. And they've stated outright that there will be "no terraforming" or other kinds of terrain editing. So yeah, mining will just extract resources from the solid ground. Not necessarily realistic, but the realism of Kerbal has always been to do with the space flight more than the infrastructure supporting it.

i hear ya. Was just thinking though a ice covered moon like Europa with a ocean under the ice. How you going to get to it without drilling?

No Man Sky doesn't have to deal with a thousand part craft. lol

Let's get KSP 2 running well under load before tackling big projects like voxel terrain.

i hear ya. Was just thinking though a ice covered moon like Europa with a ocean under the ice. How you going to get to it without drilling? Just seems like a waste for all those underwater craft/parts to not do it. Besides isnt it the PQS system that has to render everything anyways and its already in the game. What difference would it make to render surface "A" or the now changed surface "B"? Up close at terrain level may lead to some load at the time of editing but at a distance should decrease load because PQS is decreasing?
