SRB camera mounts and SOUND AFTER MACH 1
softweir replied to TeeGee's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Exactly so! -
I would guess things like "a) Throttle to 100% - Check"; "b) Cargo bay doors closed - check"; "c) Snacks loaded - check!" More serious items would be for things like batteries, solar sails, RCS fuel and all those other odd items we tend to leave off ships. I have lost count of the number of rockets that went dead becasue I forgot to make sure they had electricity generation on board!

[1.3.1] Ferram Aerospace Research: v0.15.9.1 "Liepmann" 4/2/18
softweir replied to ferram4's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Maybe you lost altitude during the turns? If you lose any altitude during braking manoeuvres then that will put airspeed right back on - but you will end up slower than if you just lost the altitude.- 14,073 replies

Why were the SSMEs at risk of damage if run dry?
softweir replied to photogineer's topic in Science & Spaceflight
iirc, the SSMEs' turbo-pumps used the fuel or oxygen as lubricant, and if they ran dry they would probably seize up - which at those revs would be severely destructive! -
Yes, I've had that odd little hallucination of hearing my name in an empty place. Just once - but very disturbing for a few moments! Another odd one is - when there is very noisy traffic in the street - of thinking I can almost hear voices or phones ringing which go the moment there is a pause in the traffic. One's ears are attuned to hear voices, and when there is sufficient noise of the right sort of pitch they can be fooled.

They don't lie - they tell you what is most likely to happen to people in your area. But they can never tell you what will happen to you because weather is irregular and happens in patches - one place might have a thunderstorm, 3 kilometres away there is no storm, and there is no way they know exactly which places will get storms and which won't. The British Meteorological Office reports the probability of rain etc, so in effect they say "over that part of the country, fewer than 5% of places will experience rain" or "80% of places will experience rain".

Each mod has its own copy of KSAPIExtensions in its folder. Recent versions of KSAPIExtensions are OK with this, but older versions can't cope and start messing with each other. The solution is to make sure each and every mod you use is using the latest KSPAPIExtensions. I don't know if you can just download the latest and shove it in each mod folder (being sure to delete the old copy!), but it's worth a try. EDIT: May not be relevant to the mod in question. I'll check! EDIT EDIT: Nope, sorry, not relevant - I have no idea how KW and PF are interacting!

KSP doesn't have a proper installer that has a certificate to prove to Windows that KSP is legitimate software. Windows doesn't like uncertified programs in Program files, and moves any files saved by those programs in a weird place outside Program files. If you move KSP outside Program files, Windows stops caring. KSP needs a proper certificate, and needs to start using My Documents for saving files, NOT wherever it was installed!

parts [1.10.x] SDHI Service Module System (V4.0.4 / 11 October 2020)
softweir replied to sumghai's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Last I read, Stupid_Chris agreed that it is a problem with RealChutes and is working on it. -
[0.21+] Kosmos Spacecraft Design Bureau: Updated (9/27/13)
softweir replied to Normak's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
KOSOS uses Firespitter for the double-axis solar panels, so that will need updating as well as KOSMOS. I also seem to remember the latest version had one or maybe two parts with broken collision hulls. -
[1.3.1] Ferram Aerospace Research: v0.15.9.1 "Liepmann" 4/2/18
softweir replied to ferram4's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
It sounds to me as if you may have excessive thrust to weight. On the pad you need to keep the thrust down to between 1.2 and 1.4 times weight, and have each stage start at roughly the same ratio. Keep an eye on the time to Apoapsis: it should stick at around 30 to 45 seconds. If it goes above that, throttle down a bit. If you are using MechJeb, go for an early start to the gravity turn, and keep it very low and flat. To get to LKO you need about 3,5000m/s of dV. If you were using the stock aerodynamics then this would result in failure because you'd lose far too much dV fighting the aerodynamic soup. With FAR, you can use much lighter engines, so the apparent inefficiency of a low, flat gravity turn is compensated for by having to loft much less engine mass and having much less drag.- 14,073 replies

What's not in KSP: European Extremely Large Telescope update
softweir replied to Sky_walker's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Interesting news! Thanks for that. -
What will happen if Skylon succeeds?
softweir replied to MrHappyFace's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I assumed that was the case. Or it may be black because nobody knows what colour it will be, and the technical artist decided black looked nice and clean and different from most concept art. In a similar vein, I can remember that a lot of early NASA-sourced shuttle concept art was pure white until a very late stage before Enterprise started being tested. It was only once the technical artists saw all those carbon-black areas that they realised the ceramic tiles only covered part of the shuttle! -
What will happen if Skylon succeeds?
softweir replied to MrHappyFace's topic in Science & Spaceflight
It will also bring Kessler Syndrome doom a step nearer. Doom I say, DOOOOM! But yeah, if Skylon works as hoped then it will seriously put the cat amongst the space-launch pigeons. If it doesn't work as well as hoped - like shuttle - then a lot of backers will wake up one morning with a lot less money than they thought they would have. -
Oh... Rats. Oh well!

I don't know for certain, but I would suspect that an enlarged heart combined with high blood pressure would make you ill if you went up to any altitude, even if you are taking medications that keep you well at ground level. If you get ill when piloting a plane, you put your life in danger. If you have passengers, you put their lives in danger. The only way to know for certain is to report the problems and wait for the medical examiners to make a decision. If you lied, then you would be committing a crime, AND you would be putting yourself and any passengers in danger. Killing yourself because of a lie is a very sad way to go. Killing other people because of a lie is a very criminal way to go.

Indeed. For instance, I suffered a cardiomyopathy about 15 years ago which caused some parts of my heart to stretch like rubber balloons. After I spent about 5 years taking numerous heart drugs the chambers shrank back down, and for most purposes I am "cured". However, my heart remains just slightly damaged, and if I were to fly there would be a serious danger of my collapsing - and if I were piloting, I would take a whole bunch of people with me. The diabetes and cystic fibrosis which I also have are bad for piloting, but the heart damage is a strict no-no!

[1.12.3+] RealChute Parachute Systems v1.4.9.5 | 20/10/24
softweir replied to stupid_chris's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
In the VAB, switch to Action Groups editing and then right-click the parachute. That will bring up the complete RealChutes settings dialog (which is too complex to implement as tweakables). -
All you need to do is right-click on the tanks of the descent stage and set them to zeroes. That will simulate the descent stage being dry for the purposes of RCS Build Aid.
