  1. I once made a nearly SSTO with about 21 orange tanks; obviously wasn't full when it reached orbit (and certainly could have used a refueler that big lol), but it had about .25 times the weight of the fuel in engines too with well over 1000 parts, so it would have been damn near impossible to make a lifter to put it into orbit full lol. I've been hearing talk about people trying to put a kiloton into orbit, I'd be amazed if anybody can do that for sure =3
  2. Sorry, came into the thread on the fourth page past midnight being half asleep, didn't bother reading the other pages XD entirely my fault, as well as the poster who I replied to I suppose. I simply wanted to inform is all =3
  3. Just wanted to point out that gravity (even on Kerbin) is way too high for ion engines. If I remember correctly, the highest possible acceleration you can get with ion engines at the ideal maximum TWR is just above 1 m/s^2. Compared to the acceleration due to gravity on Kerbin at 9.81 m/s^2, you've got a massive problem of an impossible TWR situation lol. They can be used to get some efficient Delta-V, but they're nowhere close to being enough for a winged SSTO on Kerbin or Eve; trust me, people have tried.
  4. Sorry, just wanted to point out that "westerly" means from the west, not to the west. An "Easterly orbit" would indeed be one that is orbiting from east to west, or retrograde as you are mentioning. "Northerly, Easterly, etc." are really only terms used for weather, as it indicates what direction the weather is coming from; it doesn't have much use otherwise and just causes confusion.
  5. Well, it's just a matter of how easily you can visualize your orbit. However, it is a bit easier to figure out if you're using a different conic patch draw mode (this thread should help you choose a better one if you so desire). It can be changed in the settings.cfg file, "CONIC_PATCH_DRAW_MODE = ...", the default quite a while ago was mode 1, and I grew quite familiar with it, but a few updates ago the devs changed it to mode 3. I don't think any of the other ones are that useful, but mode 1 is the easiest to visualize when you're trying to get a desired orbit around the target body, rather than the body you're currently orbiting. Mode 1 will be helpful for orbiting the correct way around a planet or moon, and Mode 3 is really helpful for free-return trajectories and gravity assists. Really though, with enough practice, any mode will be easy enough to visualize.
  6. I've got another one, happened SO many times that I eventually made a habit of resetting the ASAS whenever I stage (hitting the spacebar and F at the same time): Me: "Ah, dead straight ascent with ASAS on, I should end up in a perfectly equatorial orbit when I circularize. Oh, fuel is almost gone, time to stage!" *stages without resetting the ASAS* ASAS: "All the weight and stuff just changed, I'm gonna point 5 degrees to the North just to spite you." Me: "FFFFFFFFFFFFFF"
  7. I'm surprised nobody has put it quite this way; I feel like an accomplished or "pro" player is somebody who can be given a range of tasks (even some that haven't been done or would be deemed by some as impossible or highly improbable) and do it. For quite a while players didn't think it was possible to circumnavigate Kerbin by boat, and about a month ago me and one other person managed to do it. They did it with refueling stops at buoys around the planet, and I did it without refueling at all (but using drop tanks). I even started a grand tour with stock parts and no refueling, with a 2000+ part ship. I haven't continued it since I got to Laythe, but I feel like I do have enough Delta-V to finish the mission. I suppose anybody reading this thread can already tell that I'm going to say that I think I'm a "pro" player, and it's true, I do feel that way; I even think I'm better than Scott Manley in a few aspects. However, there are still players better than me, especially those who can put more time into the game than I can. I don't know if it would be possible to label anybody as the best player at KSP, especially since so many parts of the game require different skills that need to be learned separately. I'm definitely weak in the design department, yet some have make freaking helicopters... I DON'T EVEN. So yeah, somebody who can take a task and perform it well and without excessive trial and error, would in my opinion be an accomplished player. I take on challenges on the forum often because I like showing off and setting the bar high, or being the first to get on the scoreboard, or be the first to break a boundary that was impossible for others to pass before I figured out the right configuration of parts or w/e. I even like accomplishing all bonus objectives for challenges if possible XD I challenge myself in challenges... yeah lol. But that's how I've come to my definition; if it can be done and you can figure it out on your own, you're an accomplished/pro player.
  8. wobblewobblewobblewobble *turns off the gimbals on a few engines* "Ah, much better!" *stages* "Hey, I think we left something behind!" as the ASAS turns the rocket around to look at the spent stage _________________ Oh, back in .16: *has ASAS on upside-down on lander, although at that point I had no idea which way was right because the lander was attached upside-down Apollo-style* *turns on ASAS because even fine-tune controls wasn't fine enough* "I HAVE NO IDEA WHICH WAY I'M POINTING!!!!!!!!!!!111!1" *lander proceeds to spin around randomly at about 1,000 RPM* Mission Control: "Yeah, I think our pilot is a bloody red mist floating around inside the pod now..."
  9. Sorry, I don't use mods XD I meant an impact. How many lasers and missiles you reckon I could fit on there though?
  10. Mod-u-lar! Besides, I think that Eve lander can absorb a pretty good blow from another vessel XD
  11. Yeah, for something designed to go EVERYWHERE (in one trip as well) aside from the Sun and the "surface" of Jool, it is pretty much overkill for any other task XD but hey, it'll save me time from having to make something else that will ultimately do less than what I already have lol.
  12. I actually think I've got the perfect monster ship for the job, my grand tour mothership and her fleet! http://i.imgur.com/OTezi09.jpg I'm pretty sure it can handle anything you throw at it. With the fleet attached, it can land on any body you want, aside from Jool. Also very modular, can dump excess weight easily. Don't need an Eve rescue? Dump the Eve lander. That alone nearly doubles the acceleration if the job needs to get done fast. Alternatively, keep the Eve lander and get tens of kilometers in extra Delta-V. I've got this in the bag XD
  13. omfg yes! Punkin Chunkin is so much fun to watch XD here's my entry, a "kannon" with 20 mainsails that pretty much obliterates itself when it's fired (video coming soon XD): Yeah, there are reentry effects on the way up... 51 km and change, NOT using the FAR mod After going splat: (I didn't even know it was possible to damage Kerbals with engine exhaust!) Ground distance is pretty far as well, so I'll include this entry in both categories (height and distance)
  14. Omg, I never thought to use fuel from those tiny probe tanks! XD time for me to try again!
  15. That's exactly what I did lol, my entry was pure plane, no dead weight.
  16. Do you really have to argue with the OP? What he has set out to say in the rules makes sense, and while downforce does make this challenge easier, it was the OP's intentions to ban it as to make it harder for people to get negative times. Also I would like to correct you and say that spoilers do in fact generate lift, just in the opposite direction from planes. Ever heard how F1 cars can drive upside-down in a tunnel because of downforce? Also yes, air-time is definitely there in everybody's entries, that's just the nature of travelling over hilly terrain at high speeds. The challenge comes from not destroying the rover when landing from a jump. However, FLYING is not in the nature of a ROVER challenge. Intentionally flying for any distance is not allowed, air time from jumps is ok. The Baja 1000 has plenty of jumps, would that make it ok for competitors in that race to strap wings and an engine to their cars and fly to the finish line? The degree to which some people can be dense is remarkable. Just learn when to give in, you can't win every fight.
  17. Take your time! It doesn't look like anybody else is having a go at this, so I still think you can get 3rd XD still, feel free to ask us for help =3
  18. Yeah, I just went to Minmus, the Mun, and still did a powered landing back on Kerbin XD WITH ONLY MAINSAILS! Goodness those things were OP back in .17 Hard to see, but note that the vertical speed indicator is 0 m/s and no throttle. Surface speed is only because it's slowly tilting sideways... Ok, so I only did touch-and-go's on both moons, but c'mon, do you really expect me to try and land that thing without falling over? XD
  19. I'm definitely one to push, since I don't usually do a lot of base building that would more efficiently work by carrying more at once. I instead like to go on long journeys to other planets with reasonably sized landers, where I think pushing is better since I think gimballing engines will have a slightly better effect. It's also a lighter, not having to build the engines radially and outwards. All in all, I think most people would agree that it depends on the payload.
  20. Oh Cooly, you and your Lugia XD I've been watching your YT channel for a while now btw. Also, I had to go back to .17 to find a crazy design, but I found one that I doubt would fly in .19 now XD (although, I might just try lmao). I present, the Massive C***, aptly named as it penetrates the heavens with its long, thick airframe, and will land on the Mun and return to make a powered landing on Kerbin! (Or, do a touch-and-go on the Mun as I did earlier, since it's hard landing such a tall rocket on a slope...) Also, it doesn't even have SAS!
  21. I remember your waterwheel! That's a great start to a thread, I can't wait to see some other crazy weird designs XD I might post one or two later if I can find something improbable enough in my save files lol. Oh, can we also post things that look like they work but absolutely failed despite a million design revisions? I think those would be good too lol, I know I have some of those XD Also I really love your RingaWingaDingDong, that thing is awesome lol
  22. I'm pretty sure there is one, let me make this post here and find out for you XD Nope, doesn't exist anymore. Used to be a checkbox if you went to edit your post.
  23. It's a self-propulsed projectile with wheels, for the most part XD Also Nao, I slow down when I get to the mountains, but I get to them at 170 m/s lol. It only goes 180 on flat ground, I should probably edit my last post there lol.
  24. I've been doing 170 up to the mountains now, I figured since that's the shortest stint, I might as well go full throttle, doesn't matter if I crash and burn. It's only past the mountains where I need to be careful =P it's odd though, it seems like after a certain amount of time, my whole rover just decides to crash on the smallest bumps. Also decides to crash my game as well XD I'm playing on max settings for everything btw.
