  1. zero i think he means alt tab out and close it immediately - as in, end process immediately. that should do the trick - unless you pass through an autosave in the time it takes you to close it.
  2. and you are missing the point of the suggestion. the suggestion wasn't pop-ups, pop-overs or the like, it was a small decal on the side of ya rocket. you choose it. Also if you'd read the rest of the thread you'd notice that there are two layers to the suggestion. having decals you get ingame cash for (gameplay), and having those decals actually sponsored (this bit you vaguely address) Bostlabs: what do you feel about the gameplay element?
  3. How about we let the OP develop his example and see how he comes up with a solution rather then discuss it ourselves the problem is timewarp - we've given our suggestions and our responses to suggestions, now we let the guy under the bonnet see what he thinks works. the only reason to lock the thread would be a repeat of old discussions, i think we've summerised the old discussions and are done now. OP back to you keep up the (genuinely) good work and show us where you go!
  4. This is A solution - it wouldnt be a good enough solution for most people though. its fine for mun and minmus (ish), but for interplanetry missions you can easily be looking at a year of ingame time, its highly doubtful a server would remain up for that time. at this stage its highly doubtful there would be no savebreaking updates in that time! Of course this could be a limitation thats irrelivent. equally with the lowest common warp idea, thats all well and good but A) you'd HAVE to have kerbal alarm clock. you would not be able to do what payload says, you wanna go to duna? well you have to wait while bob messes around on the mun in his rover, and if you leave you may come back to your ship zooming past its target. The problem isnt that people arent creative about how to get it to work, its a simple matter of if you want things to exist in the same universe they need to be on the same timeline, and for servers bigger than "me and my friend" that means they need to be consistant (to allow planning) and flexable (to allow moderately long flights). The best solution i have seen is the passive multiplayer - where the gaming experience was shared, but you werent influencing each others game. Whelp: ninja'd
  5. ROFLCopter: everybody is unique, even just the sensitivity of your nose to certain compounds is "random*". you sense compounds in the air by having a whole load of sense cells that detect a specific region (for example if you were detecting words, you may have a "th" sensor and a "sh" sensor and a "at" sensor ect). to detect specific compounds you use population coding to work out what is in your nose. (again that example: "hmmm my 'at' and 'th' sensors are going off. obviously its that i can sense). So now we have your personalised smell sensitivity thingy. but do you LIKE what you smell. Your body likes 3 types of things, things that are important (salient), things that are GOOD (erm, goodness?) and things that are assosiated with either of the previous ones. Its likely petrol (gasoline) falls into either the salient or associated bits. SO: either we all had excellent times just before/during being in a petrol station (toilet break/stretch = relief = good; food = satisfing = good; happy car journey = good) OR the specific levels of smell we sense are just slightly more nommy than other people! *random not used properly - genetics and environment, definately not random but yeah, you get the point PS: i love the smell of all solvents, i dont "sniff" them, but i enjoy them when the smell wafts over me.
  6. I think your edit sums up my view now. it could be a nice quirky feature that could help you out in a tight spot (or be used for pure comic irony), IF carried out well. real world stuff doesnt seem likely from a pure technical/financial POV, but nobody seems to like the idea either, which i get, i think i'm moving that way myself - it would have the potential to break the immersion without epic work. BTW: to everyone just saying "no" or some variant. clearly you didnt read the tag [Discussion], not [Poll]. Just saying.
  7. hehe don't worry you aren't annoying! KasperVld explains it better. to achieve that orbit, burn out from kerbin orbit until you are orbiting the sun, then change your orbit as much as your fuel allowances allow (you will need the same fuel again plus wriggle room) i suggest increasing your Ap (high bit of orbit), then timewarp til you are 180 degrees from kerbin and perform the opposite manoeuvre to get your orbit the same as kerbin. if that doesn't make sense feel free to ask for clarification - i suck at explaining so don't worry The more fuel you burn the faster you will get to the right place but you can do it for as little as you care for (hypothetically a 1m/s burn at each end would acheive it.... evenutually)
  8. I fire my LES as a seperate stage just after the final staging of ascent (so payload+final stage). although you are right, any point where only parachutes are needed is fine. Though often the parachutes are part of the LES, for payloads that wont be returning.
  9. simplest answer is then, place yourself in the same orbit as kerbin with a 180* phase difference. its the only way to be consistantly far away from kerbin without leaving the system
  10. Agree with every word. people make out that internet connectivity is evil because people can do x y z. usually x is physically impossible, y they can do anyway and all three are illegal under existing laws. BTW: add in that in addition to any illegal actions (stealing your money, crashing your car) its also illegal to gain unauthorised access to computers and networks. even by guessing the password. As the world becomes more connected - crime fighting will step up to the plate and become better at tracking and sorting out the issues. And a final note: the invention of the car has caused unumerable deaths, rediculously high levels of crime, and been financially crippling to millions. but its been great for society. (not the deaths, crime or crippling... that sucked, but the cars are kinda useful)
  11. the main problem still is "what happens when you timewarp" that has been and always will be the sticking point both technically and design wise.
  12. And all doors can be lockpicked or battered down. all windows be smashed and all pockets picked. every system designed to limit access can be bypassed/forced. my point is the hacking is lower risk then physical crime is now. the problem still comes back to the individual its protecting - locking ymself out my house or dropping my key on the pavement is the physical side. forgetting my pincode or saying it outloud as i type it is the digital equivilent. the system is only as secure as the weakest link. US. That said. the wifi enabled toilets they released they hardcoded the pincode into the system as 0000 with no way to change it. so... perhaps the weakest link there was the hardware/software designer. but surely you'd buy it, try and change the pin, and if you couldnt send it packing.
  13. No Jwenting, they are selling themselves to the next people who want a reliable, effective and cheap (ish) launch vehicle. They are a brand, and they have excellent brand management. even if they never use a grasshopper based design - its given them excellent PR. The point is, the decal on the side gets them more revenue from future customers then it costs in paint and weight. advertising is about broadly targetting your audiance - half of all people watching TV dont require feminine hygiene products, but its worth the money. even if 1 person saw their rocket and remembered it at the next board meeting that one decal is worth $50 million. advertising is a flak cannon not a patriot missile. Anywho, i dont want to dominate this discussion any more Other opinions of the OP's gameplay idea? edit @Spacehole: ok so we get that you are against real life companies buying ad space on your rocket. what about the other half of the suggestion - fake comic companies that only serve to provide you with a small budget increase ingame. We know decals were originally planned - could this be a use for them?
  14. Planning Boomer, planning. i do agree that vaguely shortterm concerns (fuel boiling off) would be far too intense for me. batteries on the other hand fit the bill - especially in an environment where in order to pay for your trip to moho you have to launch 10 satellites or 2 mun landings or something. giving a spacecraft an end of life means its worth doing again. otherwise you'll run out of missions to do around LKO very quickly! and replacing batteries should be a thing - not even undocking them and docking a new one. walking up with a "battery replacement kit" or something. or for the solarpanels "a cloth" to get their efficiency back should be a thing. that way you can decide its worth replacing the battery (space station) or sending up a new one (small sat). equally you could have "backup" batteries that dont get used unless the primaries are out - thus protecting them again degradation until they are needed or perhaps so they replace the primaries automatically when they reach a certain level. THOUGHTS! obviously i'm talking career mode here.
  15. The privacy issues i raised myself. and the performance issues are irrelevant given the following: You have misunderstood the OP's point - deliberately or not i dont care. He is not saying you pause the game midflight with a pop up for a dishwasher tablet. he is not saying you have to watch a video while it loads. he is not saying you get an ingame benefit from watching a video or paying real money (all of which i detest i should add) he is suggesting that you can, note CAN not MUST, gain ingame money by placing a decal (very small memory impact as its just a texture overlay, and wont be massive) on your rocket. He also suggests that squad may be able to profit from this by having the decals genuinely sponsored. btw: inversion = immersion? thats what i've assumed. So, how do you feel about having decals that when placed gain you ingame money (career mode, obviously), perhaps a nice comic "kerbal Life insurance - For when THIS happens". And how would you feel if Squad benefited from you having the OPTION to instead put a real life symbol on the side of your rocket. (i'd suggest a one off payment to squad or per game, rather then active monitoring to avoid peoples privacy concerns.) @Boomerdog: thats more the level of contribution this discussion needs Maybe if it was an option unlocked only when you were short on cash?
  16. Whats really interesting here is that the problem only comes about when it changes from kerb cola - which earns squad no money - to Coca Cola, which would (assuming the premise of the OP is correct, which would be a case for laywers and salesmen). Yes, Because ads pay for the internet. as a whole. OP i would suggest for now focusing on the gameplay element instead of the buisness end. a suggestion to impliment kerbin based ads on bits of your rocket would gain support. My thought would be to see if you could get RL companies to sponsor their kerbin equivelent - KerbaCola for example. But i feel the pure buisness end would be highly unfeasible - most games pay companies to allow them to use their product in the game (or are allowed to use them in exchange for the free advertising). THE GAMEPLAY ELEMENT is a great idea for career mode. especially if placement was important - $1000 for visible on launch. $500 for visible on mission complete. $100 for visible at any other time. maybe.... although maybe that would over complicate it. would stop spamming of logos for free rockets.
  17. there is already a mod that gets boil off of LOX. i think its the modular fuels mod? and with batteries ect its probably a good idea, but do a mod of it first - proof of concept so to speak. shouldnt be too hard - but remember that modern batteries the "cycle" is not the number of times the battery has been discharged/charged. its the number of full discharge/charge cycled you would have to do the same amount of power transfer. IE: 2 half cycles are 1 cycle. Anyway, this would be fun to play with. dont think propellent degredation would be of benifit - but electricity would work, espeically given how OP solar panels are ATM. if they degraded over time (years) that would make their values much more viable.
  18. hehe in a way bommerdog. but the launch vehicle on the pad is an impressive billboard. Why do you think SpaceX has its name on all its stuff? in case someone nicks it?
  19. Fundamentally: yes thats a good idea. you get kerbucks and a bit of realism, at the same time the devs get either a lump sum for including it in the game (reverse licencing i suppose) or perhaps a per "click" ad, though the latter would be a bit tricky to implement without some feedback system people would moan about. My main concern would be that it would be a dangerous slippery slope which could potentially interfere with gameplay. @zeroignite: Thats very narrow minded of you. you aren't paying anyone (any more then you have), and you can chose to use the ads for your benefit. And why shouldn't they take advantage of your playtime for extra revenue? its not even as if it would be pop up ads, you personally would be going "yes i think i'll put a cola sign on the side of this rocket to offset the extra SRB". Its an interesting idea, very unlikely to be implemented with real companies for squads benefit, but it wouldn't surprise me if a kerbal based solution similar to this was available.
  20. You read XKCD What If? I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and saying you didn't just zoom the camera in for them... Can you get it actually around the planet? rather then at 250km like a halo?
  21. I can completely understand where you are going up until facebook. but beyond that i think you may be overestimating the hackablity of such things. also bear in mind there are "analogue" equivilents to almost everything you just said. your energy company can turn your power supply off anytime it likes - but it doesnt because you wouldnt be paying you. Who turns lights off to burgle places? if the lights are on - turning them off is suspicious and noticeable! Also, its a risk that you are there! smart locks are a bad idea, but mostly because they arent overly reliable and you need a physical key backup in case. kinda agree with you on that one. Your car is electronic as it is already (if bought within the last 5 years or so) - and i bet it supports bluetooth. but more importantly there is no way to completely disable a car, for that exact reason, the best the technology can come up with is to disable the engine or force it into neutral, anything else is blindingly dangerous and there are failsafes to prevent it. And as for the smart fridge spying on you - if the terms of your insurance are that you eat smoothies everyday then you damned well have those damned smoothies, if not, then why the hell would they care?! And that final point refers to all of them. even if some hacker or police kid COULD cause you to die a horrible car related death (which they could do with a rock) why would they? assuming it was random you'd have more chance of winning the lottery . and if it wasnt random - well there are easier low tech ways to kill a guy. The biggest threat from all of this is targeted advertising! imagine a world where everytime your favourite flavour chocolate (chocolate) came on offer your fridge notified you. i'd be ruined! You are by all means free to beleive what you will and not be connected to the internet - but the statements you make above are overreactions to very low probability chances (assuming they exist at all). That said - I'm careful with what i put online and would never trust the security of my physical items solely with a wifi device. If it isnt insured/protected against online tinkering i dont use it. also, i wish i had a car that WASNT electronic so i could fix the damned thing. PS: thats a wall of text - sorry, do spoiler tags work these day?
  22. But IPv6 doesnt have NATs! NATs are good! (says nobody who knows anything ever)
  23. Need, No. Want, Yes. think about the present: any time you phone up a company you can here the tapping of keys. everything about you financially is already there. Use google search? your preferences, topics that interest you ect, are all online. there are now wi-fi enabled cameras, phones, tvs, coffee machines, lights, windows, blinds, heating, car, trains, planes. Need i go on? in the future it will be near impossible NOT to be connected.
  24. jwenting: true, but thats just being pedantic and annoying and missing the point. and actually a horse would start faster and stay ahead until the human caught up. so really being pedantic and annoying the statement would be a horse can't outrun a human. back in the day humans hunted deer ect, by chasing them until one of them dropped dead from exhaustion.
