Eve GDBAA Mission - Good idea?
Specialist290 replied to MedwedianPresident's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Sounds like a very ambitious flight profile. I'd love to see how it works out As others have noted, your main concern is likely going to be the need for a fairly large and powerful rocket, even with the balloon-assisted ascent. Eve is a little more massive than Kerbin, so you'll probably need a pretty potent "kick" to get up to orbital velocity, even from higher in the atmosphere. -
Unfortunately not my area of expertise. I'll leave this for another mod to field. If there were, we'd never tell you, now, would we? But on a serious note, we moderators do come from a diverse set of backgrounds, and we do all have our own different views on certain subjects, which does cause some friction from time to time (and not strictly always regarding moderation actions, either). Nevertheless, I believe that among the criteria for moderator selection are a demonstrated willingness to sacrifice your time and effort to be helpful to the community as a whole and the maturity to recognize that holding a different opinion from someone on certain issues doesn't mean you can't still have a beneficial and productive relationship with them, which I think helps to winnow out the sorts of people inclined to play "office politics" games.

Another service announcement: I've managed to coerce recruit my fellow moderator Red Iron Crown to serve as my assistant in maintaining the list for the time being while my Internet situation is getting sorted out. For the time being, it may be more timely to submit recommendations via PM to him rather than me (although I'll still be taking them, and will work on them when I can). And, as always, feel free to continue posting recommendations here in the thread if you prefer.

Yeah, tonight was basically the probe checking in to let NASA know how the data collection went. They'll probably be busy processing whatever it's gathered through the night.

The Name Change Thread (WARNING! ONE TIME ONLY!)
Specialist290 replied to Souper's topic in Kerbal Network
Aye, as we now have an official name change request thread, this one appears to have outlived its purpose. Closing -
PSA: how to not waste ore when mining asteroids
Specialist290 replied to Laie's topic in KSP1 Tutorials
I understand your frustration over the impression that your thread was miscategorized, but consider: The purpose of the Tutorials subforum is to provide a catalog of gameplay advice created by players to share with other players, particularly if it addresses a problem that they might have due to not understanding or misinterpreting the game mechanics. We ask that player-submitted bug reports include certain key pieces of information found in our bug reporting guidelines, to make it easier for the developers to reproduce and identify the issue in question. As your post didn't include that information and, moreover, appears to be written as if the intended audience is the player base as a whole rather than testing personnel, we judged that it would serve its purpose better General Discussion is indeed a high-traffic area, as you've pointed out, but it is, as the name implies, meant for "General Kerbal Space Program discussion, on topics that do not fit the forums below [in the roster order as viewed from the main forum index]." Since we judged that, on its surface, the post's intention to inform other players of how they could make better use of the tools available to them to their benefit fits within the Tutorial mandate best, we felt that the best course of action was to move it into the Tutorials subforum. You are, of course, free to make a new support request in the appropriate forum if you so choose, but as this post corresponds with most of the other content already contained within the Tutorials subforum in both form and in its target audience, we believe that it is best if it remains in the Tutorials subforum. -
I'm not confident enough to put a number on it, but yes, after a certain amount of time, you do tend to notice that certain topics and ideas have a sort of "life cycle" where someone will start a forum thread on them, the thread becomes popular, then it starts to lose steam as most of the more active participants have already said their piece and move onto something else, whereupon the thread slips off the front page and the topic lies still until someone starts a new thread (or revives the old one, though we generally don't encourage people to do the latter frivolously past a certain point because information often becomes outdated). (I've also been active on enough forums for long enough to know that that sort of phenomenon has existed much longer than Reddit has. Most forums tend to have certain major discussion trends that get rehashed and refined over time.)

You can put your fears at ease: Today's devnotes are out!

General rule of thumb for security systems: A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. For computer security in particular, that "weakest link" is often the users themselves.

Moving this over to our Tutorials section -
Looks like we have two new threads on the same bit of news. Merging

Eh, it's not entirely a bad thing. We do get the power and the tools to encourage an environment where everyone else can have reasonable, intelligent, and constructive discussions about the matters that are closest to their own hearts, which I personally consider to be worth the price

Impressive work! Beautiful in it's simplicity, and the situation is all too familiar.

Thus demonstrating that the worst trolls on a forum get punished with bans, while the best trolls get punished by being forced to deal with the worst trolls all day

The Positive Forum Movement (Updated 4 December 2015)
Specialist290 replied to Deddly's topic in Kerbal Network
As I've said multiple times in the past to multiple people: Ultimately, you're accountable for your own behavior regardless of what the other person did first. Someone else breaking the rules doesn't excuse your own obligation to follow them in dealing with that person. Always strive to take the high road; don't let someone else drag you down to their level. And, as others have already pointed out, should there be any real need for a particular poster to be corrected, the "Report Post" button will quickly and discreetly alert those of us who are appropriately equipped to take action. -
Paydirt -- Finding Good Ore Deposits

Duly noted. I'll make the necessary adjustments. -
Alright, ladies and gentlemen, let's not let this get personal.

Impressive work! I'll have to take a better look once I have a more stable Internet connection (currently still getting adjusted to my "home away from home" for my summer job, which has some interesting complications of its own to work out), but this is looking like it would make an excellent addition to the Drawing Board.

I'll have to give this a more thorough once-over once my Internet connection situation stabilizes, but this is looking like it might be an excellent candidate for the Drawing Board -
Welcome to the forums! Glad to hear you've been enjoying yourself. Make yourself at home!
