Ok, thanks for that info, I have a followup on the CPU choices, you mentioned there the Intel I5 4690K I looked that up and I cannot see how you have deemed the performance of that chip in comparison to others. I5 4690K, (Haswell) 4 cores 3.5GHz clock and 6mb cache £180 AMD FX-6350, 6 cores 3.9GHz clock and 8mb cache, £98 ... these are the main advertised specifications so I'm guessing (possibly wrongly) they are the indicators of performance. Can you explain to me why the AMD has bigger numbers, is 2/3 (nearer 1/2 actually) the price and yet you rate it lower than the Intel?

Hey guys, I have a generic question about how to choose components for my next machine. I am looking to upgrade (probably total rebuild tbh its 6yr old) my current system as the power supply has started (maybe 8+ months ago) to grind its bearings into dust. Currently I have; AMD Phenom II 550 BlackEd 3.1GHz (Dual Core) Radeon HD 7870 1Ghz 2GB GDDR5 (I thought this bit was salvagable as its not as old, but Fallout lists it as minimum req) 8 GB RAM I have built a few PCs before but these days I have not really kept up with developments and am at a bit of a loss as to which specifications of certain components I should be spending my money on. I am not particularly chasing bleeding edge performance, but I try to get as much as I can for what I spend which is why I tend to go for AMD. My current thinking was leaning towards the AMD FX-6350 3.9GHz Hex core, which has the same clock speed as the 8370 but for 2/3 the price ... would I really miss the extra 2 cores? Another one, is Graphics cards, Radeon R7 and R9, is that a simple upgrade or are they aimed at different tasks? £150 is about the cutoff between the top of R7 and the bottom of R9 territory. Any advice on which specifications of different components to rate against each other would be muchly appreciated :)

So, we'll put the expenses for this one under 'flight test' yeah? -
20 tonnes to LKO? Wow ..... somebody just put the big boy trousers on!! As ever another beautiful video, I dont know how long it takes you to do all the camera shots and that (also the custom graphics too) but it is definitely worth the effort! one impressed reader here :) Looking at that craft on the pad I would have expected serious wobble between the core and the two boosters flapping about like wings, yet the vid shows them rock steady. The only connections I can see are the separators and a pair of struts at the top, what kind of magic is this?? Where is your impact experiment coming form? I know Interstellar had one but you are not running that, crashing stuff into stuff is something even I can do!

3D printing may well replace casting for 'heavy-ish' industry purposes, but the major problem you have is the ability to produce a surface with a smooth enough finish to be gas/liquid tight against an adjacent component, ie cylinder block / cylinder head. You will still require a machining process to skim the surfaces to accurate tolerances. 3D printing however is perfect for 'bolt-on' components like brackets and other components with open tolerances that have enough leeway to mate on rough surfaces.

Day 262, Minmus (Continued) Day 263, KSC Day 264, Minmus My excuse for a short episode this time is spending Saturday at the Cosmonaut exhibition at the London Science Museum. Impressive display of early Soviet space tech, mostly from Energia private collection... very very Kerbal !! If anyone gets the chance to visit London before March its definitely worth a visit. -

"The KSC hereby denies any and all claims that the currently unfolding tragedy involving Scientist Nelsy Kerman was anything other than simple mis-calculation. Any claims, or leaked documentation clearly stating the fact, that this was a cheap ploy to boost ratings are to be considered heresy of the highest order!" -

Germany, cold! but at least drier than the UK atm Hardly foolish, the name would certainly indicate female to the majority of readers. But without further ado, right back to the rockety bits! Day 254, KSC Day 254, Minmus Day 255, Minmus So yeah, a little mis-calculation there on my part, I really didnt realise how long it takes to fall back from Minmus. Ooops, sorry Nelsy!! I hope you dont starve to death in the cold dark void between planets -
BAE seem to think Skylon will fly, they just bought a decent portion of Reaction Engines stock. Plus another UK government cash injection.

Modded 64k Career game UPDATE Year2 Day36 (09/05/2017)
Shania_L replied to Shania_L's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
The tech tree is possibly the only stock aspect of this game, (with an odd personal tweak to an individual part or two). Bear in mind this is still a 0.90 install, due to incompatibilities I will wait until I max out the techtree (and thus avoid any issues from repeated science making progress easy) before I try to upgrade to 1.0.x (or perhaps 1.1 if I take ages at it Also, yes I am back now, so I'll get another episode out ASAP, thanks for all your patience and continued interest in my play -
Modded 64k Career game UPDATE Year2 Day36 (09/05/2017)
Shania_L replied to Shania_L's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
I had to inclination change before ejection burn due to Minmus not being anywhere near an equator crossing point of its orbit. Had I ejected then incline changed I would have missed Minmus by a long way and ended up quite embarrassed Yes its a very in-efficient way to get to Minmus, but the craft was already in equatorial orbit, to match Medea for its re-fuelling, so its a case of bite the bullet, either wait ages for a plane alignment, or burn an extra 600Dv to incline the orbit. Medusa has the Dv to spare so I went for it. For future launches its something I'm going to have to work on, if I launch at an angle from the ground (as I do for direct ascent missions) then I'll never get LKO meet-ups between sub-craft, or I am going to have to wait for Minmus to cross Kerbins equator and launch equatorialy. Not sure 2 weeks in a German factory counts as a vacation!! I expect Ussari boots on Duna before I return! -
Modded 64k Career game UPDATE Year2 Day36 (09/05/2017)

In which much refuelling takes place, much orbital shuffling occurs, also new 2 manned missions ! Day 244, KSC Day 245, KSC Day 245, KSC Day 246, KSC Day 247, KSC Day 247, Mun Orbit Day 252, KSC Day 253, KSC On an OOG note, I will be out of the country on work for the next 2 weeks so am going to be unable to post (or play) until the beginning of November. But rest assured I am returning and have plenty of ideas for more launches, and a replacement for Hector!! -
80, 96, 60 years? wow damn, err are those all on stock sized systems? I have OPM on a 6.4scale install, I think I may have just realised just what kind of a challenge this might be

Europe and Russia planning a lunar south pole mission?
Shania_L replied to PB666's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Not likely, ESA has been burned trying to co-operate with NASA on big budget missions before, that is the whole reason Exo-Mars is collaborative with Russia. NASA is too tied in with the 'current' ruling party in the US, one little election and they shift gears in another direction, then whoops that multi billion mission we were working on? well we're not doing it anymore sux to be you. -
That would be your love affair with solid boosters and face melting G forces yes? I may be further ahead in terms of "things done" (I have no idea how much actual in-game time you have burned though) but then you are tying your game in much closer to a cohesive storyline to a level I can only dream of. I will freely admit though, I am slightly less restricted than you by (still) using 0.90 I do not have to deal with RealFuels ullage simulation and limited ignitions. This can drastically simplify my orbital craft by having a single engine that can do circularisation, orbital adjustments and then retro burn. Then ofcourse there is the equatorial launchpad

Whispers of the Kraken (Epilogue: Revelations of the Kraken)
Shania_L replied to CatastrophicFailure's topic in KSP Fan Works
Once you get past "Hey baby - wanna come back to my place," whatever you put on the end is irrelevant to your actually intent Also, its probably just me but I got the 'other' meaning for latex straight off ..., but I still cannot figure out the link between latex and tattoos ... ? -
Have you even looked at the technical specs of Skylon? Reaction Engines state that it is a demonstration design, they are an engine company, even so the design is 4.6m x 12m and 15 tonnes (D1 variant) to 300km LEO. That is plenty for an imaging satellite, plenty for a smaller GSO sat+boost stage. There is a design on their website for an upper stage that can put 4 tonnes into GSO. I said in my previous post, leave the massive payloads to brute force rockets, Skylon isnt trying to compete for the massive launches, 15 tonnes is more than enough for regular Low Orbit missions, crew and cargo delivery to ISS etc. Even if noone picks up on the Skylon design itself, you can bet that the armed forces are salivating over the SABRE engine, that if nothing else will get built.
-
Virgin Galactic got a contract recently for 300 LEO satellites, launch them a few at a time, put it up in a few months. Also the frequency of launch allows you to get away with the reduced payload capacity. Launch an ISS supply on a dragon maybe once every 6 months, but Skylon could put fresh food on (or floating above) the table every week. Who ever thought you would need to be able to get across the Atlantic faster than a cruise liner? Well, once planes could do it we certainly found many reasons why.
-
Skylon itself is a sound idea, many independent studies have verified it as "possible" the thing that will kill it is capitalism or politics. Reaction Engines already has an agreement with the US Airforce (PDF) so expect them to suck all the secrets and then build their own "totally not a copy" Skylon off in the US somewhere. The guys running Reaction Engines have fallen foul of Government cancelling tech projects before, Re Rolls Royce HOTOL, so they have stated they will not agree to become a government project. Its something I really want to see happen, and something that the space industry really needs. Save the brute force rockets for the ungainly or super heavy payloads, and let spaceplanes take the regular cargo and crew delivery missions. You cannot compare Skylon to the shuttle, they are entirely different beasts, the shuttle was essentially a disposable rocket with a massively oversized return capsule. Skylon doesnt have the same payload ability, but it is truly re-usable, to the point where there is nothing stopping you from launching the same ship twice a day.

Whispers of the Kraken (Epilogue: Revelations of the Kraken)
Shania_L replied to CatastrophicFailure's topic in KSP Fan Works
Note to self, read Fan Works before Mission reports. Even so was worth it for the storytelling, I am sure I have said it before, but awesome work I always look forwards to a new update. -
Awesome! Glorious just doesn't quite cover it, so you'll have to take a standard Glorious, and dunk it in pure refined Gloriousness and then put a cherry on top (sprinkles are optional), congrats on a great laun ... ohh wait what? Err, let me guess you never wanted that orbit anyway? You do realise that for the rest of the evening I will be touring the Soviet folk songs section of youtube?

Modded 64k Career game UPDATE Year2 Day36 (09/05/2017)
Shania_L replied to Shania_L's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Day 239, Mun Surface Day 242, Low Kerbin Orbit Day 243, Low Kerbin Orbit Day 244, Minmus Orbit A minor (50Dv) inclination change for Helmdar IIc-Mi to increase to 88 degrees to allow biome scanning of the poles. I am really going to have to find a way to make a good chunk of Funds pretty soon, as the vast majority of my missions are loss making. Saving up for the final R&D upgrade is becoming quite the challenge especially as my contract schedule is getting pretty stacked up with 3 star contracts I have accepted but dont want to spend out on the necessary craft to complete them. ISRU is a possibility, but Karbonite really doesnt have much of a value and it weighs a tonne!. Karborundum is massively valuable, but well out of my acquisition range unless I get a lucky jackpot asteroid passing through Kerbin SOI ... not that I have any means of detecting (or tracking) asteroids just yet. I will have to put a bit of thought into this, how to make a space program profitable ..... how does NASA do it? ... ohh wait -
o\ I make one post about a museum exhibit and you lot try to use it to get Val married!! However being proposed to under a lunar lander would def get a yes from me .... especially if it was on the Moon at the time On topic, I have managed to make arrangements to get to London some time in November, I'm so looking forwards to it! @ _Augustus_. The LK-3 never flew, it was intended to be used therefore it was a proposed lander. Proposed/Intended its a semantics thing, same meaning different word.
