  1. Failures like that are why it's important to have actual pilots on space missions. I've recently read The Right Stuff, where I learned about Gordon Cooper's manual reentry and landing flying after all the spacecraft automatic systems quit on him in the last Mercury mission - if he hadn't had the manual controls the astronauts demanded, he would likely have died and that could have been it for NASA. If there are human beings onboard, one of them needs to be able to have the necessary skills to bring the craft home.
  2. Aw, I thought it was incredibly cool, if not as earth-shattering as Kerbtown.
  3. I know this probably isn't as big a deal to everyone else here who have taken the Grand Tour twelve times with an SSTO, but this album chronicles the creation of my first successful spaceplane, the F-20C Super Space Peregrine. This is my favorite screenshot from the mission, click through for complete report and more shots.
  4. This whole thread is nothing but beautiful, beautiful win. Thank you, FractalUK. I'm not to the point in my KSP career where I would feel (technologically) justified in using the Warp Drive or the other technologies contained within - I only had my first successful manned flight an ingame month ago, and Jeb's been sitting on the Mun, waiting for rescue for a week - but I really look forward to being able to use this plugin eventually, once my Kerbals start climbing the Kardashev scale in earnest.
  5. This is one of my favorite threads. I haven't downloaded KerbTown, and I probably won't until there are some user-created cities, etc, to place around Kerbin (I am having enough fun with launching rockets and trying to rescue my first Mun mission right now to go mucking about with changing the placement of objects in the world just yet). But I love to see how modders are taking this great game ever further, and this is one of the strongest threads of that right now.
  6. Thanks! I had tried everything I could think of, but I didn't think of changing the directory out of ProgramFiles, which is a protected directory. That worked. So I'll have my stock .21.1 install and my modded .20.2 that I can both play now! Thanks again!
  7. Hi, I've just installed FAR into a brand-new fresh install of KSP .20.2.etc, but I can't get it to work. I've followed the included instructions, unzipping the GameData and Ships folder into my KSP root folder and merging them with the folders already there. The new vehicles show up in the SPH and VAB no problem, but the FAR CAS button doesn't seem to exist, and neither does the in-flight UI. This is the first mod I've installed, so what am I doing wrong? I did also try Firespitter's Planes and Propellers on a separate copy of KSP, which mostly worked, but didn't work completely either - no sounds, no animation. I've been futzing with it for hours and I'm kind of fed up.
  8. The Mohole reminds me greatly of the Star Gate from Clarke's original 2001 novel: the second monolith is actually on the surface of Saturn's moon Japetus instead in Jupiter orbit. He appears to fall into it and is transported across the galaxy... much like your original explorer.
