Suggestions for a Duna Lander?
Monkeh replied to MrZayas1's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I recently went to Duna, (and nearly all the way home again!), a couple of times with differing craft. There's this one here: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/entries/1080-My-mission-to-Duna-and-why-this-is-one-of-the-best-games-ever-made My second attempt is documented here: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/60009-The-harsh-realities-of-engineering-Home-Sweet-Home-Mk2-To-Duna-and-back They should give you plenty of ideas. Basically you'll need a lifter and an interplanetary stage, probably using low thrust/high efficiency nukes. this will mean long burn times, to Duna, probably around 10 minutes or so, so start out the burn half way from your maneuver node, (so if it will take 12 minutes then start at t-6 minutes), and then the lander. The best way to do it with a single launch is to work each stage with enough delta v and not a lot more. For this I'd highly recommend the Engineer Redux. It does all the maths for you and gives a nice read out of how much delta v you have at what thrust to weight. Incredibly useful. You need around 4,400 m/s to get into LKO. From there it's 800 or so to escape the sun's SOI. From there around 1,500 ish I think, to get to Duna and a few hundred to slow down again once there. Then you'll need an injection burn of not a lot to get into the atmosphere. Parachutes will help but will not slow you down completely, you need some thrust at the start of the atmosphere and at the end to help you slow down. To get home again you'll need around 2000 m/s to achieve Dunan orbit and around 1,800 or so to get back again. All of these numbers are approximate, but using those and the engineer you can build a much more accurate rocket that doesn't waste fuel or weight anywhere. Good luck. -
Please do show me where I insulted anyone. Point out where I whinged and moaned, please do. You are entitled to listen to whoever you so please, naturally, but the players of KSP need to realise that Squad owe them absolutely nothing, nada, zilch, nil. The game was bought 'as is'. They are under no obligation to add anything else at all. No multiplayer, no resources, hell, they could even take everything out again and there would be nothing you could do but try to get to the Mun without maneuver nodes. My point is just that, Squad owe you, me and us absolutely nothing. Whether you listen to me or not, that fact is still a fact.

Voicing opinion is fine. Moaning and whinging and throwing insults around about fraud and what not is not the same thing. If a player bought this game expecting this feature or that feature to be implemented in the 'final' version, then they only have themselves to blame. It is clearly stated everywhere that, "Still in development....things can change...blah blah blah", and I dare anyone on this forum to honestly state they haven't had their monies worth already. Obviously my post was tongue in cheek, of course they're not going to abandon KSP for some nasty words written on a forum, the point was they could if they wanted to and be breaking no law.

What life looks like on other planets? (scientific discussion)
Monkeh replied to tetryds's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I think that every organism on the planet still grows it's young in an aquatic environment. Eggs, after all, are just a small, enclosed 'sea', wombs and water births of many a creature, it's all about creating a tiny little ocean just for your offspring to grow up in. We all came from the sea and we all carry the sea with us when we re-produce. -
Not sure what you mean. The only use of 'we' in my post was where I was speaking 'for' Squad. It was a fantasy thought process. KSP multiplayer is already a reality. A mod exists that makes it possible and it works. Just to make myself clear. You paid for some software that wasn't finished and will be updated. You paid for what was there already, not for what they may, or may not, add in the future. Squad can do WHATEVER THEY LIKE with their software, make it into a hotdog eating competiton simulator...WITH REAL PHYSICS! if they so desired and you could do absolutely nothing to stop them. Just enjoy what they've given us and hope what YOU want is added in time.
-
Well of course it's not going to happen, the point is they could, if they wanted, do exactly that and be breaking no laws or committing no crime. People should remember that. Also, shooting yourself in the foot used to happen quite a lot. People did it on purpose to get out of a situation they didn't like or feel they should stay in... Squad could come to work this morning and see all this and maybe feel that a bit of foot pain can be lived with. Just sayin'. Edit: Sorry KasperVld, some people have very annoying attitudes, I was simply trying to provide a wake up call.

Squad made some software called KSP. It was a good piece of software and it became popular and sold lot's of copies before it had been finished. People who had bought the software did so with full knowledge that Squad didn't HAVE to add any more content should they not want to and they were paying for an unfinished product. These people then get on their high horse, a fictional, wispy horse of very little substance, and started calling Squad all kinds of names after their plans for the game changed a bit. Do you know what I would do if I were Squad? I'd say, stuff you you ungrateful, entitled bunch of moaners, here's what we're going to do. We've just made a decent amount of cash after being on Steam for this length of time, our bank balance is looking very healthy thank you. Now then, all of this poo storm you've created has made us upset. We realized that multiplayer is possible and got all excited that we could bring you THE most requested feature, by a huge margin, of any and all and we also found that the resources system we had designed wasn't very fun to play with. We were going to change tack, give you all multiplayer and then go back to sort some resources out as well, but now, now, after the behaviour you've shown this weekend, we've decided to stop all development of KSP as of today. We're laughing all the way to the bank and all of you who called us nasty names are to blame for the cessation of this project. Please consider 0.23 to be 1.0 and the last update from Squad for KSP. We shall pop up again in a short time with new nicknames and a new project and the best bit is you'll pay for that one early as well because you won't recognize us. SUCKERS!

I understand it's because a three dimensional 'brane had the idea to touch another three dimensional 'brane' 'floating' in four dimensional space. If that is the case then the big bang may not have happened at an infinitely small point and all the problems of physics breaking down there may not be actual, real problems. The energy released by trans-dimensional membranes crashing into each other must be unimaginable. I love this theory for it's simpleness, I mean, everyone can understand two things whacking into one another and producing energy via heat or sound for example, no-one can wrap their heads around infinitely small, dense and energetic points, doesn't make sense, but if those 'branes collided over an area that would correspond to a galaxy or two then all the problematic physics simply melt away into the trans-dimensional sub space. I love making psuedo-scince phrases up...hark at me with my trans-dimensional sub space. Now what the three dimensional 'branes are doing 'floating' in a four dimensional space is another question altogether, but at least for our universe it's an explanation that doesn't break physics. At least I know that I know nothing

Your football team is playing, your girlfriend is off work, it's the weekend and all you can think about is your mission to Eve...

Update coming soon?
-
Well that just sucks. Next time, there's always the next time. I also had a Duna mission go horribly wrong recently, my problem was an upside down girder connection. Upside down...that was all. Reduce your pain by reading about mine here: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/60009-The-harsh-realities-of-engineering-Home-Sweet-Home-Mk2-To-Duna-and-back . You're welcome. I managed to take far too many pictures

If we're talking about adding lots of parts and having to move them each time what I do is just add one, move it to the right stage and then copy that part with 'Alt LMB' and add another one on. Doing that will not only copy the part, (and any child parts), but also it's current stage as well. So with sepratrons add one, move stage, copy and repeat.

Eve Launch simulation
Monkeh replied to 700NitroXpress's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Then you'll need many and more delta v to escape, around 11,000 m/s iirc. -
Eve Launch simulation
Monkeh replied to 700NitroXpress's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
If you're very good at maths and fancy sitting down and solving equations, I suppose yeah... Easier to either use hyperedit and just shove the craft onto Eve or use the Engineer redux when building and set it to give you a readout for Eve. I believe you need from 7,000 to 11,000 delta v to escape, depending on height above 'sea' level of the starting point. -
Eve Launch simulation
Monkeh replied to 700NitroXpress's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Throttle control isn't going to mimic higher gravity and more atmosphere. It will just make the fuel your carrying last longer. I suppose you could work it all out that if you throttle at 70% and assume the tanks are dry when they have 23% of their starting fuel left or something... I shouldn't have started this reply, I'm off, cya and good luck. -
BANGARANG! The user below me has a birth mark.

Annnnnnddddd THIS is why suicide burns are a bad way of landing. Try to set up a nice circular orbit and then come in nice and horizontal. Kill the horizontal speed and then drop slowly to the surface. You get to pick where you land then as well with the maneuver nodes. Scan for anomalies or kethane deposits and land next to them or just try to land next to a crater. But yeah, suicide burns use more delta v...I think, than a nice circular orbit followed by a little landing burn.

perkele-noun Devil perkele, saatana Welcome. Best ship name. Now I'm thinking of re-naming this one: To the, 'Does My Bum Look Big In This?' or maybe, 'The Fat Bar Steward'. Not sure yet.

How do I fix my rocket
Monkeh replied to LadyAthena's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I'd highly recommend the Engineer redux. That will give you stage by stage readings of your thrust to weight and delta v. You can then add fuel and engines and see instantly how much further, or not, you'll go. Then you can build more exact stages. Lifter can have exactly 4,500 m/s to get to orbit, going to Jool? Pack another 2,500 or so on the next stage etc. -
Docking: How do I get closer?
Monkeh replied to Skorpychan's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I very nearly got to Duna and back without docking. It was badly built in the last stages. My bad. Check out my blog post if you can be bothered. Might help you out some. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/60009-The-harsh-realities-of-engineering-Home-Sweet-Home-Mk2-To-Duna-and-back -
