To OP: Whilst travelling to Alpha Centauri seems like an almost impossible or pointless venture to us now, I'd like to remind everyone of the HUGE advancements we've made in only the last 30 years. As long as I can remember with any certainty. When I went to university we queued outside public phone boxes to ring home because no-one had a mobile phone. Take me back to then now with a working Wi-Fi connection and my smart phone and my student self simply wouldn't BELIEVE what I was seeing! Being able to grab any piece of information I could literally think of, any slice of film or music or...just...anything, watch it on an HD screen WHICH ISN'T EVEN CONNECTED TO ANYTHING...and I would have probably fainted or died with excitement, possibly both. Within a couple hundred years none of us can really imagine where we'll be or what we'll be able to do, let's be honest, so I'm a cautious optimist regarding our future as a species. Yes, we have many problems and yes, we have plenty of possible doom scenarios that could destroy us, but we also have HUMAN BEINGS. Again, therein lies some problems but the majority of people are good people. The London riots of 2011 were shocking, a minority of disgruntled people decided to just go nuts for a few nights, London burned. But then the people came out, the good people, the people who had lost businesses and homes and the sense of security, they came in their thousands with brushes and mops and rubber gloves, to clean the mess and make it right again, chanting against the rioters. That is why we'll be a galaxy spanning civilisation one day, because we can be, and we humans are awesome.

Beautiful!

Have a look at my Mun return mission blog if you like, see here if you want some inspiration. It's pretty much all stock with some asparagus staging. If that phrase means nothing to you, google 'kerbal asparagus' and away you go Good luck, you got dis!

Adding/removing music
Monkeh replied to Toa Aerrow's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I love this idea. Please Squad, can we have nice things? -
This one also made it to Laythe easy enough. Although looking back at that old craft, I see many things that could be improved upon. It's amazing how much you learn whilst playing this game. So many things I thought I'd never be able to do seem trivial now. Still lots more ahead of me as well.

I'd add both. Keep your options open. Maybe have large ones on the ends, medium ones in the middle and small ones elsewhere. More options is good. When I made a mun base my lander became a rover that became the base. Here's some pictures to illustrate my idiocy. All that before I even knew wheels had brakes, hence the unretracted landing legs acting as brakes. Doh. Also, think I was getting around 2 fps at that point. Literally. 17 Kerbals in all in that scrsenshot, pretty sure a few more were somewhere nearby, but just getting those out took ages at 2 fps. Anyway, good luck, you got dis.

Best advice is to accept a long interplanetary burn from those efficient but weak ass nukes.

Help with decouplers and Liquid Fuel Engines
Monkeh replied to Beadon's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Decouplers are also not fuel cross feed capable, this means fuel from above them cannot get to an engine below. -
Carried on with trying to get to Duna and back only using the toroidal and round tanks. Not quite got enough delta v yet, getting close though and a few more tweaks and we go for it I reckon. Nice mod

If you're enjoying the demo that much then you definitely need to be buying the full game. So much stuff to see and do. I'm 400 odd hours in and I've only scratched the surface. Only downside is I can't get enough. I'm always coming up with new stuff to try and do, often failing. Check out the screenshots in my Sig, some inspiration perhaps. Good luck and have fun. Quick tip for you after watching the video, burn at the apoapsis and periapsis for best efficiency and more circular orbits.

Painting the map!
Monkeh replied to Whirligig Girl's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Actual exploration is a key drive behind any space programme surely. If mapping and scanning don't make it into v1.0 then Squad are idiots. Pro tip: Squad aren't idiots. -
Fannie Melange, a down and out Parisian scientist, produces the world's first mass manipulator in December 2154. The results of her experiments cause the Earth to lose 85% of its current mass before being shut down. Our atmosphere vents to space and people can jump to the moon. It goes down in history as, 'Not a bad day'!

Even the atoms in the 1 dimensional remains of your kerbal are flattened by the g's. Infinitely smooth Kerbal soup anyone?
-
About to head off the Mun and become my first kerbal to return home.

I bought myself a double header recently of a new watch: Also I needed a new headset thanks to the rubbish Rokkat Kave breaking, which is great, because it was rubbish. I got a Cyborg F.R.E.Q 7 and it's amazingly good. I like to spend all of my money on me just before Christmas.

Radial decouplers - why don't they work?
Monkeh replied to alkopop79's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
The key is to remember it's your mouse pointer that is the attachment point. Line up with the detachment manifold and slowly raise up or down in the centre. I use the detachment manifolds all the time, no problems. -
Manoeuvre on the ascend node - why takes hours?
Monkeh replied to alkopop79's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
The numbers it's coming out with may be calculated with the rcs thrusters as the main push. Just a guess. -
Your question about photons inheriting the speed from the vessel could apply to a car as well. You don't need to going a significant fraction of c to realise it can't work that way. A car may only be travelling at 30 mph but c+30 mph is still >c. Even walking forward with a torch would achieve a similar result.

Making long distance journeys more challenging
Monkeh replied to Algiark's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
there's a little more to it than just 'building bigger rockets' but i get what you mean. Problems with the realism mode is where do you stop? First off food and water, then oxygen, then radiation shielding, then micrometeorite shower shields, then solar flare shielding, then exercise bays to reduce muscle wasting and bone de-calcification, then psych reports to assess mental health, then 'fun bays' for recreational...ermm...recreation, toilets...the list goes on and on. So you want all that programmed, balanced and made fun? Ermm, not gonna happen I'm afraid.
