What happened was that it was going so fast that everything tore off, including the parachute (FAR's aerodynamic failures accounted for some but not all of this, I swear). The capsule slowed down to around 200 m/s before disintegrating at splashdown.

My favorite is Apollo 7, due to how interesting it is. Read through the Wikipedia article if you're curious (which I found quite humorous). Schirra also has to be one of my favorite astronauts since he's quite funny on all of his missions, including Apollo 7.

I saw it this morning from where I live near Oxnard. It was amazing. The sky was COMPLETELY clear and there wasn't a single cloud in the sky. It started out as a relatively long fireball that ascended and expanded, which turned into a small red dot when the 3 SRBs burned out. Then something awesome happened: the first stage started making this contrail: What was cool about it was that it got larger as the vehicle ascended and immediately cut out at MECO. Here's a picture a few minutes later: And one by my friend: It was great.
