Show off your Kethane Mining Designs!!
Mesklin replied to Amphiprion's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Here is my last one - heavy (120 t fully loaded) space tug and kethane miner in one thing for Jool-5 expedition. Fully automatic, equipped with scanner, drills and converter. For electrical power for mining operations I am using kethane reactor - this device is lighter then big solar panel and can produce more energy. -
If you will use pure rocket ascend it will consume 3300-3500 of dV, with jets or RAPIER it will be more cheap. Lander with small lander cabin, 2 FL-T100 tanks (with half oxidizer), one RAPIER, 3 circular intakes and 2 small parachutes can easily land and return to Laythe orbit with spare fuel. Also this craft has possibilities for some landing maneuvers (Laythe has very small quantity of hard surface for landing)

Mun Flea (ion SSTO for Mun round-trip) Start mass - 5.2 t Ion dV on LKO ~4500 m/s 1 turbojet and 4 ion engines (at the bottom of craft)

Open Source Construction Techniques for Craft Aesthetics
Mesklin replied to GusTurbo's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Here is sequence of actions for create cute, seamless plane body. You should place struts between to small fuel tanks (pictures 12,13), without it construction will be to wobbly. -
Off your engine and close intakes as fast as possibly after touch surface, it should help

Fully reusable 2-stages DH-1 in variations
Mesklin replied to Mesklin's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Thanks, GusTurbo, i also love final result for second stages for this series , it is very high density packing (like russian space tug Briz-M) and no unphysical clipping. I intersected almost only construction details with functional details (like tanks, engines and so on) -
Fully reusable 2-stages DH-1 in variations
Mesklin replied to Mesklin's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
It is not so big problem, adding 3 more aerospikes, replacing turbo jets by basic jets (only for landing purposes, like original design), adding one more big tank and finally, it can fly almost with same effectiveness. See picture, not so elegant like precursor, but it is flying, 24t more on launchpad - totally 106t -
The Reusable Launch Platform Challenge

What is about my DH-1 ship series (cargo variant), is it legal using jets or not? -
[Showcase] Showoff Your Rep-Worthy Crafts
Mesklin replied to Redrobin's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Here is my ultralight Eve round-trip expedition with start mass only 34.5 t On low Kerbin orbit Landing on Eve Ready to return back to Eve orbit Moving to return vessel -
Rover "Longnose", equipped landing engines and two sizes docking ports (dV - ~2.5 km/s, enough for Mun, Moho, Dres, Vall landing and return to orbit)

There's no way for this SSTO to get into orbit, is there?

Brilliant, you are already on the half way to the space. From this point on nuke and set pitch to 30, then gradually down throttle (best way is using options "Prevent jet flameout"). Next climb till throttle reach 1/3, off jets and full thrust, set pitch to 50-55. Next wait for stopping decreasing vertical speed, wait some time and start gradually decrease pitch (I recommend do not overshot 100 m/s for vertical speed). Congratulation, you are in space today P.S. Your original spaceplan from post also can reach orbit, I checked it -
Here is my small hydroplane (spaceplan also), prepared for future big Laythe oceanic expedition Bottom view Hi-speed water maneuvering (top speed on the water - ~100 m/s)

Let me introduce several crafts inspired by DH-1 rocket concept. In brief it fully reusable 2 stages system: first stage flying vertically and deliver out of atmosphere second stage, then first stage land back to launchpad with help from jet engines. Second stage accelerate only horizontally and reach low Earth orbit. After payload delivering second stage land back to runway on parawing (see detail in Wiki). Here is my realization of Mun round-trip ship Here is concept picture Variants of crafts: 4 passengers+pilot - This craft has ~1300 m/s dV on LKO, can reach Mun/Minmus orbit and dock with station (theoretically can reach Dune/Eve orbit). After refueling craft has 3500 m/s dv and can make Dune round-trip if you have goo piloting skills. 4 passengers craft 2 passengers+pilot - This craft has ~2000 m/s dV on LKO, can make Minmus round-trip or reach Mun orbit and dock with station, then return back to Kerbin without refueling. After refueling craft has 4056 m/s dv and can easy make Dune round-trip. 2 passengers craft Mun round-trip ship - can make comfort flight for 1 kerbal to Mun and back in Apollo style. Mun ship Cargo ship - can deliver to LKO up to ~9t of payload. Craft with using of Procedural Fairings mod - Cargo ship PF Stock only craft All crafts in one file

Here is my rolling stone with small Kethane help - VTOL to anywhere "Nautilus". Equipped with kethane scanner, drill and converter, can reach almost any body in Kerbol system (include Tylo with small trick/except Eve), land, refuel, return to orbit and continue moving (Mobilus in mobile). Also it is rover, stable and fast enough on low and high gravity bodies (tested on Mun, Vall, Kerbin and Tylo), if you made landing in kethane desert, you can travel on wheels to the nearest kethane deposit (you can use MechJeb's rover autopilot). Can land in the liquid, but can not move in it and mine kethane. Fully fueled craft has ~4 km/s of dV after stored kethane conversion. See this device in action in Jool-5 Kethane mission Craft is here, unfortunately this craft is not so sexy as Rune's plane, more standard SSTO will be late -
You are not alone in it

The ultimate awesome lifter challenge!
Mesklin replied to quasarrgames's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Here is my lifter - "Super Hexagon", can deliver to LKO ~146 t (4 orange tanks) Start lifter mass - 67.4t, parts count - 217, almost 3 intakes per engines, but less then 3 . 18 turbojets+3 RAPIERs -

2 stages fully reusable rocket based launch system (like DH-1). 4 passengers, 1 pilot, Mun orbit capable, dock and return without refueling Vertical ascend Start horizontal acceleration First stage landed and ready for refuelling -
Short range SSTO "Vulture", about 1 km/s on LKO
