  1. Upon fidgeting around and being restless last night, I spent a few hours doing research on different exoplanets (always calms me down and gets me ready for sleep!) but I was struck by 2 planets in particular... HIP 91258 b, and KIC 8435766 b... both were discovered right at the end of October. HIP is a gas giant, roughly the size of Jupiter, and whipping around it's host star at a distance of only .057AU, completing 1 orbit in only 5 days! KIC is in a similar boat, except it is even crazier! Orbiting it's star at a distance of only .0092AU, and completing an orbit in a blazing 8.52 HOURS, it has a little less than twice the mass of the earth! It is thought to be comprised of mostly rock and iron, and has an estimated dayside temperature of 2900*C! Well... my dream last night put me into a system with those 2 planets, in a KSP-like environment. I was an astronaut, as well as an engineer on a small space program based off of a tidally locked moon of the gas giant. Only half the moon was inhabitable, due to the vicinity to the host star, so an entire civilization had thrived on it's "back" side. The other side was a charred wasteland. The space program was trying to send missions to the tiny rocky planet that was whizzing around the star, because there had been some incredibly valuable resource discovered there or something. well anyway, there was a lot of crashing, burning up in the sun due to random gravitational assists from the void, and lots of KSP-ness... it was all very interesting looking back on it, but boy was it a stressful dream.
  2. I've always been interested in space, the universe, and such. I was pretty much self-taught on a lot of things at an early age, I just loved reading about the physics of space, and the planets. I haven't been playing KSP for all too long, almost a year now but before that, I was already up to date on all things space. To me, it's a game that I thoroughly enjoy playing, and it just so happens to line up perfectly with my interests. I'm in my senior year of mechanical engineering school, and although I really would love to work in aerospace, it just really isn't my thing. I tried taking a few classes, but there are more... er... terrestrial things that I'd rather do with my career. My main academic interest is manufacturing. Even before I started playing KSP, I had(still have) an app on my ipad that beeps at me whenever a new exoplanet is discovered
  3. Hey, I flew to the north pole, too! except with a cruddy craft using only the first tier of aero parts a BLAZING speed of about 300m/s... it took a while, but I've never done it before, so I wanted to try. I want to unlock the next few tiers, now. I've never known how to build a stable plane before, and now that I can, I want to actually try and design a cargo SSTO.
  4. I mean... someone was able to build a craft that could RETURN FROM THE SURFACE OF EVE using only the demo parts, so...
  5. That's tough, but really, there isn't a whole lot you can do about it if you've already done all you say. What sort of official involvement has this issue seen? Has the bullies parents been spoken with? Usually alerting parents to the situation can really get a point across. Are your parents involved? What grade are you in? Technically, you could file a restraining order, and depending on how it goes, he may have to be the one to relocate. I remember in high school, there was a serious sexual abuse case, and the girl (the victim) filed a restraining order against the guy, and the guy had to transfer schools. Think about it this way, too... What makes this kid so much better than you? Nothing. He is below you. He has to resort to putting others down to reassure his own self-worth. My advice: Don't make it physical, that would be the worst thing you could do. I know it might feel hard to resist, but that will just be ruining in the end. And about your friends: You say he is "turning your friends against you"? If someone is so easily swayed by some big tough bullies choice racial comments or whatever, that they are no longer your friends, were they really your friends in the first place? Just take the legal way, restraining orders, try and get the police involved (slander is pretty serious, depending on how old you are, and what is being said) It may seem like the "wussy" way out to hide behind things like that, but if you want to be successful later on in life, you can't be starting wars now.
  6. uh-oh... UH OH HAVE NO FEAR JEB! I WILL SAVE YOU! yeeeeeeeah I MADE THE BASKET TOO SMALL! *facepalm* don't worry, I got this all good, guys.
  7. that is pretty impressive! I have a friend who's into rocketry, he got his high-power license last year this was before he got it (wait for the last launch, it's worth it) and now he does stuff like this I still need to go to a launch with him sometime.
  8. You know... if I actually had a career, and money, instead of being poor and in college, I'd seriously consider buying that there engine... like, totally seriously. that isn't really that expensive at all, considering the price of the other things. EDIT: oh it's an auction... it's already up a big higher, but still... not too bad. EDIT EDIT:... buy the control panel and convert it into a KSP control panel... make the dials read correct, and run your missions only through IVA, and clip out the on-screen control panels TOTAL IMMERSION.
  9. Guess what class I got into? ME-743 Satellite Systems, Dynamics, and Control "General satellite systems with emphasis on spacecraft dynamics and control. Topics include general satellite information such as types of satellites, missions, and orbits, as well as satellite subsystems. Basic spacecraft dynamics and orbital mechanics topics are covered. Advanced topics include attitude and orbit estimation, and automatic attitude control. Prereq: ME 670 or permission." should be a big bundle of fun! I plan on injecting KSP into the course wherever possible (projects, homework, etc) I also plan on being the only person who knows the orbital jargon before the class starts hahaha The professor had done a bit of work on some of the the systems for the MAVEN satellite that launched for Mars just a few days ago she's pretty cool, she's already my advisor for my senior project... which is working on a robot for the NASA Robotic mining competition, which is based around mining materials on the moon/mars. I'll be all space-d out next semester
  10. I was having trouble with accidentally releasing stages too early, particularly on stressful, twitchy landings. so I started adding a bunch of empty stages between key staging components, so that "just in case"... I don't crack my return stage in half and fire the solid separatron booster stage while landing on the Mun.
  11. I'm interested in this! That'd be quite a challenge! I'm sort of tempted to try now...
  12. come up with an acronym that has as many K's in it as possible that sounds like something. I've started naming ships that way. My small kethane scanning probe around the mun that I launched yesterday is EKKS mI (extra-kerrestrial kethane scanner, the m is for Mun), and the first real manned craft that I have been re-using for munar encounters (for goo science!) has been dubbed KOEV I (Kerbal Outerspace Exploration Vehicle) I plan on continuing this nomenclature, and adding indicies when updates occur as more science is unlocked. The first orbital station I put up will be called KOOO I (kerbin orbital operations outpost)
  13. I think you might just need to develop a better science flow to optimize your unlocked parts. It took me only 3 flights to unlock the solar panels, so that just makes everything really easy after that. first flight was to kerbin orbit and back second flight was to munar orbit and back with a bunch of goo pods 3rd flight was to minimus orbit and back with a bunch of goo pods each time that I returned, I got out, took a surface sample, got back in the capsule to store it, got out and took another surface sample, and an EVA report then I recovered the kerbalnaught on his own, and then the capsule seperately, that way I got 2 seperate EVA reports and surface samples. I never even transmitted anything but crew reports. (I'm playing this career much more scientifically, instead of last time where I just spammed transmissions) I recently restarted my career mode (yesterday) to incorporate some mods that got updated and I learned the first time: go for the solar panels first time, every time. both of those moon missions were completed mostly without SAS of any kind, because I underestimated how many batteries I'd need... and I only had one of the tiny engines that doesn't create electricity on my last stage. It's possible, but pretty frustrating. backwards quoting My last minimus mission last night (to get the remaining science to unlock solar panels) was HAIR SPLITTING. It was SO CLOSE. I was completing my return burn after exiting minimus' SOI, and I DIDN'T have enough fuel to get into atmosphere! (uh oh)... but good thing I've been practicing moon return gravity braking, because the little kick that minimus gave me on it's way past was just enough to drop my periapsis to 20,000m, and I came in for a flawless aerobraking and landing. The whole time I was thinking "wow, it's really obnoxious how intense this is right now"
  14. Well... this may not seem like a big deal, but I feel like it'd be an easy addition to the next update. stop the birds from chirping when viewing the space center at night! (in the screen where you select where you want to go) maybe swap the sound clip over to some crickets, that'd give a much better ambience experience.
  15. A few days ago I docked in complete darkness, using only the green highlight as I hovered my mouse over the target port, and 4 little green lights on batteries around the other port. it took me only 20 minutes, maybe a bit less, I think, to orbit, rendezvous, and dock a habitation module, and a portion of the ascent stage that still had a bunch of fuel (which is going to be used to relocate the power module from this station to a station around the Mun so I can replace the kerbin station power module with a bigger one) On the rendezvous burn, I got within 700m of the station without trying too hard, it was FLAWLESS. (even I was surprised!) WITH RCS, but still... I'm working on it!
  16. the only thing here is... how does the game know when an object becomes close enough in order to need to calculate it, if it hasn't been continuously calculating it's location?... I think that's really why it doesn't matter how far away things are. I think it might calculate based on SOI, that would make sense... no need to be calculating ship orbits over on jool if you're heading for the mun. I wonder if the OP tested only in the SOI of Kerbin?
  17. most of the time I bring up pandora on my ipad, and put "audiomachine", or "2 steps from hell" as an artist and plug it into my surround sound. great stuff! it sets an amazing mood for some epic orbital views and such...
  18. That'd be fun! That would couple well with the other thing that I've been sort of wanting... a "harder" sort of game, as in, after your flight lasts, say, 30 seconds, you can no longer revert... ascent vehicle full of tourists blew up? Oops... no reverting! it'd make you think about your designs more when civilians (an your space budget) are hanging in the balance.
  19. are those prop-slowed lander probes? ME WANT! here's just some snippets of recent missions dat emergency (being dumb and hitting space too many times) landing skill. That's a tiny rockomax engine on the bottom. Wasn't designed to land... landed anyway... still transmitted science.
  20. build surface bases on other worlds, and design ships that are lighter, but need to make pit-stops. I had a neat idea for a re-useable ascent stage to put on duna or something that had rover wheels, and parachutes (can you re-pack parachutes in vanilla? I have realchutes, and EVA'd kerbals can re-pack chutes), so you could launch a vehicle that had stopped, then return the ascent stage to be refueled and used again. don't ask how you'd connect the 2 portions together... build a crane! idk, get creative.
  21. Here's mine, a small science outpost. As soon as I gather enough science to unlock the antimatter physics section from the interplanetary mod, I hope to launch up a new power module (just a bigger nuclear reactor), and turn it into an antimatter factory. I'll probably end up replacing it when I unlock the larger docking ports, it's real wiggly. I have another science pod out in munar orbit waiting for a reactor, so I might use the tug docked there to bring the power module from this station over there. I think I have enough fuel... quicksaves!
  22. I wonder if I could edit the saved ship to what I want (just the station part), toss it on the launch pad, save and then edit the persistent file, and just copy the new ship over the old ship?... Or would the persistent file contain one conglomeration of data for the whole docked bunch? I'll have to look into it. Yes, definitely would back everything up twice.
  23. I can't wait to see this thing land somewhere I can't remember if you mentioned... but what's the lucky celestial body that's going to get a giant log dropped on it?
  24. I've heard people speaking of editing .craft files... but what exactly does that do? Is there any way for me to edit a craft that is currently in orbit? I just want to add some aesthetics that I forgot in my hasty launch of a space station... I added surface mounted lights to the rest of the station, but the little command module at the end is bland and dark... I figured I wouldn't feel like that is cheating, since the lights are only aesthetic... see, the portion where the tug is docked doesn't have any lights on it... bleh. thanks!
  25. oh, I don't care about the water, my textures are already at quarter-res... I don't mind the game looking "bleh" as long as it works smoothly. Any instructions on where these configurations are in the settings file? And what should I put as new values? EDIT: found the settings file, digging for the water subdivision thingies... EDIT EDIT: found the subdivisions of the ocean... setting to a lowly 2 and launching to test. EDIT EDIT EDIT: I also limited the FPS to 30 to not stress my computer that, along with less subdivisions... it's like a whole new game! I can actually turn my textures up with no problems! awesome
