How Many Satellites is too Many Satellites?
User Unrelated replied to Poryy's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I still want to see someone circumnavigate minmus with a satellite... one big ring! I'm not sure if it would actually work, based on game loading dynamics, though. I once "had to" (wanted to) move my main Kerbin station due to a large density of debris around it's orbit (I chose a LKO parking orbit of around 100Km, which is a pretty common orbit to be dropping fuel tanks and such.) I also came within a couple thousand meters of it on a particularly speedy ascent to high-orbit one time, that was scary. Now my main habitation station is WAY the heck out at 3000Km, because I figured out that it doesn't take all that much more fuel to plop stuff up there. -
I called myself a pro after I landed on the Mun in one piece but then I tried docking and realized there was still much to learn I called myself the king of outer space after I mastered LKO docking but that feeling lasted but minutes until I tried landing on another planet I then called myself the best KSP player alive when I landed a small probe on Eve But thinking about how to get it back really baffled me and ruined the excitement I deemed myself the master of the universe when I pulled off a tour of the Jool system but then trying to land a base on Laythe really pushed me to my limits And then, one day, I decided to concrete myself in the history books as the greatest Kerbonaught of all time so I legally changed my name to Scott Manley but my mom made me change it back

You Will Not Go To Space Today - Post your fails here!

uuh... Hey where'd that payload go? -
Worked on my budget minded Minmus Express one-way shuttle. Patbald got to test the new design... He was a little weary when he found out that the main ascent stage was a surplus intercontinental ballistic missile, but everything ended up working fine. He was sent up to retrieve a lost load of science. Girbald had a bit of trouble when he ran out of EVA fuel at 200m on his way back to the capsule from a trip to the top of a nearby mountain, and the craft was left stranded. (the pod in the second pic isn't landed, it's on it's descent. You can see the stranded craft down in the distance. I also started a high-orbit space station It has one of 2 habitation modules attached right now, I forgot to take screenshots. and just because:

I am currently using "Modern Spacecraft Dynamics & Control" by Marshall Kaplan in my satellite dynamics course. ... "modern", as in, it was printed in 1976 (My copy is a hard-cover with embossed silver and gold lettering!) it seems pretty decent, though. It's quite thorough, and quite clinical... gets straight to the point. It covers everything from the basics, to attitude control, to advanced orbital thingies that I haven't even bothered looking at yet.

Things you've caught yourself doing after a KSP binge
User Unrelated replied to kyle5432's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I am in a satellite dynamics class at university, and we do a lot of in-class discussion about space related news and such... More than once, I have said "Duna" for Mars, and "Jool" for jupiter, out loud, in class discussion. Nobody else seems to understand, so I guess I am the only one who plays KSP, which seems strange. I also sometimes will sit near a window while I eat my food, and watch cars drive by, and sometimes my brain expects them to randomly traction-roll and explode like rovers do at higher speeds. I do that too, but it was my fluid dynamics professor's fault, not KSP's -
Whackjob, you're a bad influence on me. I was tired this morning, and thought "...well, Whackjob likes coffee, so......." and now I think I am addicted to the stuff. I have no idea how I've gone 21 years without having tasted the delicious morningtime elixir. Sugar is for the weak

let's do this. "Roll to determine the structural integrity of the linkage between LT-2 Landing strut and Mobile Processing Lab MPL-LG-2" 'uuuh... 8, plus knowledge engineering... so 12.' "The linkage fails. You touch down on the Mun at 7.8m/s, and the landing leg separates from the vessel with a loud and echoing CRACK. Your lander flops on it's side in a cloud of dust and failure." ... 'I wish to radially attach this Rockomax Jumbo-64 fuel tank to that TT-70 Radial Decoupler, in 4x symmetry.' "Roll knowledge strutting, with a -4 symmetry penalty" hahahahaha I would so play the turds out of a KSP tabletop. I probably couldn't find anyone to play with, though... my friends are all obsessed with roleplay-heavy future-mech campaigns

OH! You can see the reaction wheels ghostly silhouette on the image in the VAB, that's clever!... and a LOT of reaction wheels. I was building a relatively large (for me) vessel the other day, and a mod that I have adds radial reaction wheels. I wondered what would happen if I tossed them on in 8x symmetry... it just snapped my rocket in half! haha

Be careful with cloning ships! I had a similar problem with a landed Mun base. I landed a new science module right next to it (PERFECT landing!) and it looked funny, and was glitching inside of itself. I quit and had a look at the persistence file, and there weren't exactly copies of the ship itself, but there were AT LEAST FIFTY copies of almost every part on the base all cloned into the same vessel, so I had a 3000+ part ship crammed into the space of a 40 part ship, which would explain the massive lag. I spent a good HOUR sifting through and deleting all of the cloned parts and then re-loaded, only to find that the game hung on re-load of the ship, and it just happened again. And then this happened http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/32027-You-Will-Not-Go-To-Space-Today-Post-your-fails-here%21?p=933229#post933229 It wasn't a mod... it just sort of happened that once, and hasn't happened since. I now make backups of my persistence file before and after every time I play, though. That was my 3rd corrupted save without a backup in less than a month.

Had some "...wut" moments, and some facepalm moments. wut?... wut...? facepalm. and I got some neat shots with hull-cam. if only there were shadows... (I have to run my textures and shadows at minimum)

[1.1]Hullcam VDS - mod adopted by linuxgamer
User Unrelated replied to Albert VDS's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I am running the latest version of both. I just got the L-tech stuff, but I only plan on using the plugin, not the parts, so we'll see if this still works. -
[1.10.0] Final Frontier - kerbal individual merits 1.10.0-3485
User Unrelated replied to Nereid's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I think that would be a fun idea! I also have another little idea that popped into my head yesterday... Probably not anything that you would want to focus on right now, but for in the future, if you want ideas... Maybe a similar "ribboning" system for saved ships? I don't know how you would do it, but if you saved a ship, and then did multiple missions with it (as I usually end up doing), it could have a similar thing to an individual Kerbal. Not neccesarily that the rocket parts themselves all survived, but more the DESIGN of the rocket is getting the achievements. There'd prbably be issues with things like "adding one extra part to the ship to give it new science functionality" etc... How would you determine what is the "same" ship? Because technically you could make a ship, then save it, and then delete everything and make a completely different ship and save it in the same file... Just a thought I had Also, I know it might be sort of a pain with how fast you are pushing updates out, but a current download, with a running chengelog would be very nice to see in the original post. (the first post is still displaying 0.1.6c as the most recent update) -
[1.1]Hullcam VDS - mod adopted by linuxgamer
User Unrelated replied to Albert VDS's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
So, if I am understanding this right, these cameras are supposed to be able to do science? Is it only certain ones? I can't seem to make any of mine do anything remotely scientific. Do I also need to install some plugin from L-tech? I am also having a similar issue as stated recently about the hotkeys for changing cameras, and exiting the camera view not working. I've tried changing the config to a bunch of different things and nothing works. -
I forgot that hullcam was a thing. I was trying to remember what the mod was called... I'll go check it out, it'd be cool anyway.

I need this camera thing need need need. I feel like there should be some new guidelines to include a mod list with screenshots hahaha

Both my toolbar folder, and Final Frontier folder are in my gamedata as separate folders, and everything is working fine. -
[1.10.0] Final Frontier - kerbal individual merits 1.10.0-3485
User Unrelated replied to Nereid's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I'm still using 0.1.5c, and the "first" ribbons seem to be working for me. I'm probably just going to leave it as-is and wait for a bigger update Don't want to break anything trying to fix something that isn't broken! Definitely a fantastic mod, though! My save got corrupted the other day for some unknown reason (not related to your mod, thankfully), and I've since sorted it out, and removed a few mods to make it stable, and have started a new career fresh with your mod. It will be awesome to see how it goes Right now, this mod is #2 on my favorite mod list, right below KAS, and right above Interstellar -
Flags are not "Flights in Progress"
User Unrelated replied to jfjohnny5's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I had a flag "crash into the mun" last night... "Fish Taco Crater" is the flag name. It was sort of a strange chain of events that led up to it, but it is possible! I'd count anything that has left the surface of Kerbin a "flight in progress"... Except flags. -
I did that, and nothing was happening. It's the same way that I have to do it for the stock science lab, so naturally, that was the first thing I tried.

You Will Not Go To Space Today - Post your fails here!
User Unrelated replied to Mastodon's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I angered the Mun. what the heck are those "panel06"s? The first picture where it says "structural failure of linkage between XXXX and container type A"... those were light pylons that were in no way attatched to the ship. Everything just disintegrated all at once. And in picture #3... "Fish Taco Crater"....... that was a flag. The result: a corrupted save file. Fun! This all started when I landed Fish Sticks I in a PERFECT vicinity to Fish Taco III... FTIII started to **** out, and I was curious... I could pull seemingly infinite kerbals out on EVA and then the game just gave up. here's the before... After is just a black screen. -
I really have no idea, but I never knew that existed and now I want to go there.

Pragmatic alternative to perfect orbits
User Unrelated replied to lodestar's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I've got 8 different comms sats up right now. 4 in LKO, 2 a big higher up with comm dish coverage out to Minmus, and 2 around Mun for surface exploration. I used Engineer redux to get the orbital periods perfect, to within 1 second (If the accuracy went lower, I would have done that, too) so far, I'm about 2 years in after the first LKO sat launched... None of them have really moved and I have even used one of the comm dish sats as a time-warp ship (to wait for the Mun to turn around so I could land on the bright side) As long as the orbital periods are good, then everything should be fine. My LKO cluster is pretty messy on the inclination end, but all of the orbits are relatively round... I use a combination of designing heavy satelites, and a single ANT engine, or linear RCS port to get the fine-adjustment necessary to form nice orbits.
