    Spacecraft bounce when hitting planets. You have a better chance of survival if you fire your engines to accelerate you towards the ground.

    That's great design by the MJ devs: if you can get most of the tech tree unlocked, you can get into orbit easily, therefore automating it makes sense.

    I used to rely on Mechjeb, but once I was in a career save without MJ, I managed fine without it. - - - Updated - - - Maybe you would only get MJ/autopilot if you had a really clunky flight computer.
