I'm with F2O2 and a nitro-carbane. Only way to explain some of the booms.

Music to Launch Rockets To - KSP Music Thread

.the 50% youtube links make trickier to do, at least at work. But it shouldn't be too much other than cut and paste... I've tracked a few other threads: Music to listen to when launching rockets, http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/12210-music-to-listen-to-when-launching-rockets/ Great music for KSP adventures, http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/94667-great-music-for-ksp-adventures/ Im making a big music playlist for ksp, http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/75631-im-making-a-big-music-playlist-for-ksp/ KSP Plugin Songs! has anybody done a compilation list for this thread? -
Anybody got any tips for planning multiple burns pump a ship out of the Kerbin SOI? My plan is to start around 75000, pump my way up to the Mün and sling shot out of the SOI. With my first attempt at round three I would have to burn more dv to slingshot past the Mün than to burn the rest of the way out.

Game modes, playing style, mods and the definition of fun
steuben replied to Hupf's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I play bi-modaly. full career for the gameplay challenges, money and part constraints. sandbox for modeling, booms, goofing around, playing with designs and ideas for career, etc. I play with some mods hyper-edit, ker, rcs build-aid, hanger extender, kkv, kerbalcam. but no parts packs or resource packs. -
At larger sizes more structure is needed to keep things from going squish. The square-cube law and all that, ex a doubling of each dimension means a factor of 8 increase in mass, and a halving of each dimension means 1/8th the mass. there will be a point where structure vs fuel support (pipes, heating, pressure regulation, hidden snacks) dominates the mass. at low masses of fuel you just have to keep the fuel in place. at low mass plastic wrap and a couple of zip-ties will work. but for larger masses you will need 1/8 aluminium skin and a steel frame.

more like a third. teutonic and what ever the parent of Russian is balance the rest.

maybe reversed Spanish is an optimal, either local or global in the calculus sense, language and gradually all space faring races converge towards it. given the nature of kerbals i'm not too surprised that they optimized language before ... other things.

I suck at math need help.
steuben replied to halbert5150's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
i'm seconding lack of brackets on this one. sqrt(2*r1/r1+r2) will simplify to sqrt(2+r2), since the r1/r1 goes to 1. you might mean sqrt(2*r1/(r1+r2)) similar for sqrt(2*r2/r1+r2) -

Formatting is off for me as well. "A Turtle Stops Flying" was pretty bad, so much radio chatter in that one. I just copied and pasted from my offline copies. I like the idea of the tags, atm. I will let me link all of my Tales of the Swam together, forum wise. I just hope that there won't be a tag collision. -
First: KasperVld, once you get a chance to breathe, you deserve a couple of rounds of either ethane hydroxide or hydroxyl-methyl-methane, in the 50% to 60% by volume range. A migration of this relative scale is no mean feat. For it to have gone as smooth as it has is to your, and squad's credit. I've lived some horror stories and been on all three sides of the fence of several migrations. Second the First: The only good change is the stuff in my pocket. I hate change. Change is bad. Change is evil. Change will be our doom. Waily waily, waily. Second the Second: Since I have zippo control over it, I'm going to kerb up and work with it. Third the First: The general ordering of sections. I agree, "Gameplay and Technical Support" should be above "General KSP" Third the Second: The threads in Gameplay Questions and Tutorials need a last posted date on them when looking at it from the forum level. Third the Third: the broken internal links. it has been discussed at length, so I won't add to it. but it would be a nice long term project... or something to hand to that poor intern <evil laugh>.

What do you think of the new Q&A format here?
steuben replied to cantab's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
it needs a last posted line like the other fora.. forums... forex. given the changes over time from new aero, part rebalancing, etc. an answer from .23 won't work in 1.0.5, and may point people in the wrong direction. -
The first two are wet mass, the second dry mass. She has about 3k more oxidizer and ~1500 LF than she needs on the ascent. On the return she have any fuel loading. I'm testing with a fuel set of tanks from 1000kx1000k. So I maybe too heavy coming back in. There are two large reaction wheels tucked in the cargo bay. I'm going try a half orbit in the 70-50k altitude band later and see what kind of mess I make. There's a RC001S in front of the cockpit so no kerbals have been lost... yet.

I can get my plane up. Nicely rendezvous with the station at 1,000,000mx1,000,000m. But when bringing it home I either end up with bits of roasted bird or a tumbling bird without space for recovery. I don't have the intuition enough to tell if it is control authority, speed, col/com, approach, etc. Digging around I found this thread: How to get a Space Shuttle down from orbit. But it looks like it is from 1.0.4 aero versus 1.0.5. But, if I'm interpreting it right, get the bird down to about 1400 mps by 25000, and then fly it the rest of the way with engines and airbrakes. I'll edit in some pics, with COL and wet/dry COM, when I get to my KSP machine.

totm oct 2023 Post Your Cinematics Here! (Cinematic Enthusiasts)
steuben replied to Halban's topic in KSP Fan Works
Can someone help me with this kinda stuff? I'm very new to video making :P So, I want to cut out some parts of my vid (damnit OBS you hath failed me!) and add music. (and mute out the games sound) I've tried using the Youtube Video Editor, and dragged in the vid and some (CC) music, but all it does it play the video once I drag it in... I really wanna make some cool cinematics but this is pulling me back... Anyone know what to do?
When i've had to do stuff like that I've used a multi-track editor like adobe's premiere pro. But that's a pretty heavy tool. I'm sure there are cheaper/free options like it out there. -
Is it possible to dock the Mk2 clamp-o-tron in the SPH/VAB? Or am I looking at having to do some work with the offset and make root tools?

http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/139996-Tales-From-the-Swan-A-Turtle-Stops-Flying?p=2304090 Looking at the ground bound white shirts in this one. I should really get one of those outfits, black pants, white shirt, slim black tie, rectangle thin rim glasses optional. I think I might need to work on my radio traffic. It seems easy to get lost in that. I think it is consistent both internally and close to real life. -
Erbur Kerman glanced up into the VIP room overlooking the control room. Dr. Reinhardt Kerman stood watching the video and data streams on the big boards. The first fuel plant for the Cygnus project was almost 400 meters above the Lesser Flats of Minmus and descending. “Mike-mike control. This is foxtrot papa hotel zeero fife, over.” The voice came over the speakers in the room. It was tinny but clear despite the compression and the radio hash that eight LV-Ns were throwing out. “Foxtrot papa hotel zero fife. This is Mike-Mike Control Bravo, go ahead”, one of the orbital stations controlling flight on and around Minmus. “Bravo, we are 400 meters to touch down. Descending at 15 emm pee ess, will begin burn to 5 emm pee ess in one tree seconds… mark.” “Zeero fife. Bravo. Ack” Erbur studied the telemetry on his monitor. All the systems on the hauler and the fuel plant were well within specification. He adjusted his glasses. Erbur looked up at Dr. Reinhardt again. He just stood, hands crossed behind his back, watching the big boards. “Foxtrot papa hotel zeero fife. This is foxtrot papa zeero zeero eight. Over” The fuel plant that was carried beneath the transport craft. “Foxtrot papa zeero zeero eight. Zeero fife. Go ahead.” “Zeero fife beginning landing procedures. Surface pads will deploy in five seconds.” The voice of the crew commander of the fuel plant. “Zeero eight, Zeero fife. Ack.” This was the part that worried Erbur. The landing pads would get near the exhaust stream of the LV-Ns. The exhaust splashing off them could destabilize the craft. Three hundred metres and falling did not offer any time to stabilize seven hundred tons. He pulled up the control systems readouts. He watched half of them go turn yellow from green; and then back to green. It was not a problem. He knew there would be questions. His boss would accept a half answer and a “we’re working on it.” Dr. Reinhardt would only accept there is no problem, regardless of the size. He closed the control system readouts. The legs on the fuel plant had locked down. With them deployed the plant looked like a turtle, an image that earned it its nickname. “Mike-mike control bravo. This is foxtrot papa hotel zeero fife. Beginning throttle up for 5 emm pee ess in two… one. Mark” “Zeero fife. Bravo. Ack” Before the mike cut out a rumble grew in the radio channel. It would be twenty seconds he would have simpler concerns. Concerns he could begin to solve. He started counting under his breath. Seventeen. On his desk in his office was a bottle of Foxtrot Tango Whiskey. A home crafted whiskey someone started distributing when the keel of the Cygnus was laid down. The first few bottles of the series had been hand labeled. Fifteen. On a shelf in his office were all of them to date. There were rumors of a set of casks laid down when the whole project started. They would be opened when the interstellar ships were complete. Thirteen. He wondered if he would get a chance to drink from those casks. He wondered why he would be drinking the bottle on his desk. “Foxtrot papa zeero zeero eight. Foxtrot papa hotel zeero fife. Throttle up for one emm pee ess.” “Zeero fife. Zeero eight. Ack” The rumble in the background of the radio grew louder. The telltale silences and squelches of digital audio being reduced to digital hash. Nine. How well would his data streams report back? He would have to check with the comms group on that. Seven. He pulled up the landing pad display. All of them showed cyan, down and unloaded. Five. “… zeero zeero … fife … splash expected … tight.” The radio signal now more distorted than it should have been. Three. High enough to jump down, even on Kerbin. One. A quarter of the pads turned green then the rest followed. Some of them blinked yellow and green as the hauler and the plant settled. “… zeero … zeero… throttle…” Erbur let go of the breath he didn’t know he was holding. “Zeero fife. Zeero eight. All pads green and loaded.” “Zeero eight. Zeero fife. Ack. Break. Mike-mike control bravo. Foxtrot papa hotel zeero fife. We are landed and stable.” Cheering broke out in the control room. “Zeero fife. Bravo. Good show guys. You’re buying back brownside.” “Foxtrot papa hotel zeero fife. Casey control. We copy you here. We’re all breathing again. Had a couple of guys pass out on the way down.” Erbur leaned back in his chair. He looked up into the VIP room. Dr. Reinhardt turned and walked out. His face was unexpressive. Erbur knew why he would be drinking the whiskey.

Lock focus in Tracking center
steuben replied to steuben's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
No luck. All I get is the tracks in the Kerbol SOI. Nothing in the Kerbin SOI, there is at least one rock on a collision course. No obvious mod either. -
Lock focus in Tracking center
steuben replied to steuben's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
looking to overlay the tracks of ~10 inbound asteroids. my initial approach was to grab screens of each rock's track and photoshop them together. but since I can't exactly match the focus position it means there is more assembly work then I would care for. -
Is there a way to lock the focus in the tracking center so that when I change objects the focus does not reset. If not possible in stock is there a mod I should be looking at?
-
Do you say KSP or spell it?
Yes. Though my kerbals tend to pronounce KSC as KAI-see.

I would like to keep the trajectories as coming from Kerbol orbit. Both for visual reasons and beacuse 70+ class-E rocks coming in from inter planetary space is well... kind of grand scale challenge to hand that to somebody and say catch. It sucks though that physics again trumps hollywood. It only takes 5-10m/s of dv to shift them to a safe distance.
