Then I will add more legs. -
I wonder if it is possible to get my Kethane scans to show up on the maps that this or ISA provide....

The Versatility Marathon Challenge
Hodo replied to 700NitroXpress's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I may make some minor adjustments to this one. The only thing I am thinking I am going to change is get rid of those I beam landing legs in favor of actual landing legs like the original design. I am also going to remap the actions settings, as 1-6 on the XI-2 are already taken. Lucky its not my SVO-25B, that thing uses 1-8 on the action groups. -
I also have a VTOL SSTO, I haven't made a cargo version of it yet, but it does not use the tilting engines from the B9 pack. I actually couldn't get them to work right for about a week then I figured it out. But my SVO-9A does not have tilting engines and if I really wanted to I could stretch it a bit and add a cargo bay and lose the Kethane mining gear. It would then be able to lift about 36-40 tons without to much effort. I am not saying that you can't build VTOL SSTOs I am just saying I disagree with you.
-
I don't agree with this completely. If you are talking about moving 70-700 tons yes, then a VTOL SSTO on Kerbin is a waste. But if you are talking about 30-50 tons no it is completely practical. I have built a couple that can move that amount or more and maintain their VTOL abilities on Kerbin. Here is one of my last tested designs, it is a VTOL and is capable of lifting a maximum of around 45 tons, if you can fit it in the cargo bay. Then there was this, unfortunately I lost the craft file when I reinstalled the game due to a bug. It could haul 30 tons to orbit and back if needed. I have made a VTOL SSTO that could lift 50 tons into orbit, but it to was lost in the bug mentioned before.

The Versatility Marathon Challenge

I didn't bring any additional kerbals along on the mission, I had a separate craft that went along with the XI-2 to try and act as a mobile command station in Eve orbit. But that failed because I lost a kerbal due to the Kracken, but there were 5 kerbals in the other craft that also returned to Kerbin. But I am not going to ask that they be scored. I didn't use a SSTO to get anything to orbit or a NASA launcher. I also didn't detach anything other than the mission critical gear. So I think the only thing I can claim is, I didn't detach anything other than the mission critical gear. But I am pleased with that score. It's not great but not bad considering the nightmare that I had with that landing. -

It wasn't for the challenge, I already hold the top spot in the FAR Mod division, I was answering his question. Which is why I quoted him in the response. -
The Versatility Marathon Challenge

Well here is a simple write up on the mission. The XI-2 was already in orbit around Kerbin sitting at an orbit of 100km x 100km, or for me standard parking orbit. It had just refueled at KerSta-2, my space station that sits at a 100km x 100km orbit for any mission outside of the Kerbin sphere. The mission package had a critical fault with the landing module and was forced to be returned to KSC for testing. (the lander was eaten by the krakken) But the XI-2 continued on its mission to Eve with the probe attached. After a 3hr and change deceleration burn into Eve, the XI-2 and crew arrived into a aerobraking orbit of Eve. After the orbit was stabilized at 108km x 110km north to south, the crew of the XI-2 proceeded to deploy the probe down to the surface of the planet near the coordinates of the energy readings. A second ship arrived a few days after the XI-2 to provide additional communications coverage and reduce the signal delay on the probe, but unfortunately the XI-3 had a illness that claimed one of the crew. (Bug caused me to lose a second lander and another crewman, but he wasn't killed he just went back to the KSC) The probe was dropped and worked perfectly on decent, but unfortunately like all missions there was a glitch in the software. The flight computer failed to deploy the landing gear so the probe landed on its side, undamaged but on its side. And with the 74 second signal delay from Kerbin to Eve it was impossible to attempt to right it. The XI-2 and XI-3 returned to Kerbin as soon as the launch window opened up. And returned several months later performing another aerobraking maneuver to achieve orbit again. The XI-3 having served its use was set to burn up in atmosphere, the crew abandoned it and used a crew shuttle to come home. (had nothing to do with the mission but I am sure it was being asked) (I just realized I have no pictures of that. Its not like it has gone anywhere it is still in orbit around Kerbin.) There was one debris generated and it was a decoupler. The probe landed close to those coordinates but because I do not use Mechjeb and had to manually program in the flight plan and controls 15minutes before the actual event I am just happy as peaches that it landed on that island at all. -

Is he still setting up for the Eve mission or is he on the third mission? I am also wondering what my abysmal score is from the Eve mission. I would be surprised if it broke 100. -
[1.3.1] Ferram Aerospace Research: v0.15.9.1 "Liepmann" 4/2/18
Hodo replied to ferram4's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
You have three options. 1- Procedural Fairings (like everyone has said) 2- KW pack has a fairing part in it. (but it is just like the Procedural Fairings) 3- B9 parts, and learn to use the large 3m cargo bay. I have two of those three, and I can tell you now, when I launched my communications module for my space station I used the B9 pack cargo bay. But that was because I was using one of my SSTOs to do it. I launched all of my communications satellites in the first network I setup in RemoteTech2, with procedural fairings. Because even the little satellites are about as aerodynamic as a wall.- 14,073 replies

The MachingBird Challenge!
Hodo replied to TheHengeProphet's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Well I just proved it can be done, but I had to use B9 parts and the SABRE engines, and change over to the rocket mode when I hit mach 5.5. As you can see over 3,260m/s or about Mach 9.7! -

True, but PS2 also runs a physics engine. But PS2s game engine utilizes all 4 cores of the processor not just one and lets you use the GPU to run physics if needed. But that has nothing to do with the challenge. -

I doubt its the i5, I can run Planetside 2 at near max settings at a steady 60FPS in the thickest battles since the performance update. Even before I was getting a steady 30-40FPS. -

I read about the Unity engines limitations when I first got the game. But the game shouldn't use more than 3.4GB of RAM. It isn't written in 64bit only 32 bit so it can't recognize more than about 3.4GB. My CPU is an i5-3470 running at 3.20GHZ normal clocked, with 8GB of RAM on a W7/64. I will download the new module thanks for the lower part count. I am still considering retiring the XI-2 and replacing it with one of my SSTOs that I have that I know will do anything it is asked. -

There is a maximum altitude for this challenge, I think its 36km max. But this is also why I use FAR and DRE, I refuse to deal with KSPs lackluster aerodynamic model and re-entry model. I tried it back when I first got the game, and my first attempt to launch a rocket and achieve orbit was a success, not only a success but I was orbiting at 350km x 350km day 1 launch 1. So I got those two mods and the game became far more challenging and interesting. -

I am not using a laptop and I am still limited. My i5 quad core with 8GB of RAM and a NVIDIA 260GTX does not like large parts count. Its not even that the game is taxing my computer, it wont dedicate more than 1 core to KSP anyway, it is however the fact the game wont let me use my GPU to do the physics calculations, which the Nvidia cards do so well. I think I may look at the craft and see if I can tweak it by dumping parts I know I can replace with the same weight and function just less parts count. Oh I built a lifter that can get it to orbit, or anything for that matter. SP-406 EDIT- After I spent the past 2 hours building the most powerful SSTO lifter I have ever designed. You make a smaller version... LOL figures. Well at least I have something to refuel my space station in one trip now. -
After ignoring my SP line for far to long, I decided it was time for a BIGGER lifter. So I built the SP-406. Capable of lifting 108 tons into an orbit of 100km x 100km. That's 3 orange tanks!!!!

Quick question about the monstrosity you want on Moho, ok two. 1- is it a subassembly or a regular craft file? 2- Is there anyway to reduce the parts count down? 150 parts is pretty hefty for some, and may actually make this mission impossible for my current craft due to the parts count, not because of the mass or any other reason.
