Yes it is possible, read my post above again. Your transfer stage fairing can close on the base of the payload fairing by clicking on its base. I do exactly the same thing you want to do...
-
From the sounds of it, your fairing for the transfer stage goes around the entire payload and it's fairing yes? If that's the case, you don't have to do this. You can use only one as mentioned above. Or, make an inline fairing. For your transfer stage fairing, bring it up around the transfer stage to the base of the fairing for your payload. Now click on the payload fairing's base and it will close onto that base (it should say Close Fairing in green). And then you have no part clipping. It will create a cylindrical fairing around the transfer stage.

New stock parts - thoughts?
xtoro replied to Foxster's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Less parts would be ideal, unless they change the game to load on demand, in which case the amount of parts wouldn't matter. But without LOD, less parts, or more precisely, less parts, but more useful/flexible parts would be best. For example, procedural tanks would eliminate all the tanks except for the procedural one. Same with wings, structural parts, RCS tanks, batteries etc. As well as the ability to swap out tank contents. I know all these things exist in mods, and I use them. My parts list is very very low because of this. In my fuel tanks part section for example, I have 3 tanks. -
Orbital period not as stable as expected
xtoro replied to Cairol's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
This is where I go into my persistent file to make changes for my RemoteTech network around Kerbin. I get them as close as I can to geosynchronous orbits, exit the game and open up my persistent file. Find both crafts, and under the orbit{ section, I make sure the SMA=##### are identical. Then they stay in sync as long as I dont move them. Some may call it cheaty, but it's your game, do what you want. In my roleplay aspect of it, the satellites are just doing their own automatic adjustments to stay in position... -
New stock parts - thoughts?
xtoro replied to Foxster's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
As mentioned, larger nuke. And a larger more powerful RTG or reactor so I don't have to carry fuel and fuel cells past Jool (ie Sarnus and beyond) where solar panels become useless. -
Building Wings. (I couldn't!)
xtoro replied to Clipperride's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
This! And a tip for all those rectangular wing parts: Some attach by the short side, some from the long side. The thing to remember when looking at the part thumbnails is that the right side in the thumbnail is the side that will attach to something. -
When you enter Duna's SOI, make a maneuver node at the periapsis. Pull retro until you have the desired orbit. Now next to your NavBall you have dV, burn time and time to node. Take the burn time, divide it by half, and start your burn when the time to node matches half the burn time. Of course you want to be burning towards the blue maneuver node... If it's a very very long burn and your orbit is getting wonky, you can steer a little towards radial or anti-radial to make adjustments as you burn.

The first few decades or Russia's space program was very Kerbal. Lots of failures and explosions.

Why does my rocket keep exploding?
xtoro replied to Clear Air Turbulence's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
What does it say after the explosions when you press F3 to bring up the flight log? My guess is that you're separating the tanks on top and bottom first, and right after separation, MechJeb is changing your pitch causing one of the tanks to collide with either the center tank or its engine, or both. MechJeb sometimes makes drastic pitch changes after separating large stages because of the big change in TWR. It can also overcompensate for the sudden change in CoM causing the rocket to pitch downwards. -
This. I've been using fins for a while now and it's all I use to separate stages in atmo. Cheap and easy, and no damage. I only use 2 at the top, angled away. Sometimes you can even get away with using only one small fin per booster/tank because it will pull away from the center stack before it goes into a crazy spin.

KSP 2.0 - What would you expect (or wish) for a sequel?
xtoro replied to carlorizzante's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Scannable radiation belts around Jool for example that would cause probes to heat up or malfunction or lose comms, so you would need to avoid them. As well as posing risk of death to Kerbals for being in them too long. Perhaps adding radiation shielding parts to counter this. So possibly a new resource of rads that accumulate when in those spots. And EVA would =instant death. Micrometeorite or similar damages to ships that an engineer must look for and repair. If damage is to a tank, it would slowly leak, damage to a solar panel or RTG or antenna would cause it to not work etc... This could be something that would take you out of a time warp and notify you of the damage. More things to do on the ground that require more planning. Like taking a surface sample requires searching for a good one and not just any old clump or rock or sand, and you need a piece of equipment to do this and not just put it in your pocket... -
Mixed. Laptop is Crucial M4 SSD, PC is 10k rpm RAID array. I find my raid array loads a bit faster but that could be because of the 4.5Ghz i7 CPU...

Does anyone else feel dirty when using Mobile Research Labs?
xtoro replied to More Boosters's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I think they should produce another resource called "results" which you need physically bring back to KSC. Landing far from KSC would incur penalties in the same way recovered parts do for funds. They could also maybe throw in a minigame where you need to solve a puzzle now and then to keep the lab going. Like as if the scientists on board are stumped with the science and you need to help them out. -
Exactly. As a user of Microsoft since 3.1 AND Linux since my original Slackware distro I was using in the early 90's, I like both for different reasons. I still to this day use both with dual boot. I just think that a company making an OS that's on over 90% of all PC's must be doing something right. And I've purchased well over a dozen licenses for several PCs over my lifetime, but many of them were inexpensive upgrades. But one thing I did learn is that new versions of Windows require more recent builds. You can't take your 12 year old PC and slap Windows 10 on it expecting it to run great. If you have an old PC, stick with an old version, or upgrade your hardware. Linux is a totally different beast and runs well on older hardware provided you don't install all the newest gadgets that come with distros now. I'm not against either OS and I use both, and I think they're both great. Although until Squad fixes 64bit Windows KSP, I'll stick to playing it on Linux. Not because I prefer Linux, but because the Linux version of KSP runs flawlessly.

Agreed and funny! It's as much sense as buying a PC and screaming "how dare my ISP make me pay for internet access!"

Good names for Urlum (Outer Planet Mod Uranus Analog) Probe
xtoro replied to davidy12's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Going along with the naming of Uranus, it could be Caelus, Gaia, Aether, Hemera or Nyx. Plenty to choose from... -
mirror mode : how to change the symmetry plane ?
xtoro replied to Maukse's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Hit R to change symmetry to radial and you can place things top and bottom, then hit R again to switch back to mirror. Should work if I understand what you're trying to do correctly. -
Ok, how do you land on Eve?
xtoro replied to juanml82's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I've only landed a small probe so far, but seeing that rocket with wings made me think... Couldn't you have a rocket with wings that are attached via decouplers and glide down until you bleed off enough speed? You would just need to slow your vertical speed to keep from burning up... Then once you slow enough, depot chutes and decouple wings. So like, spaceplane going down, and rocket coming back up. I think I'm gonna give it a shot... -
Have you tried installing Kerbal Joint Reinforcement? It might help by preventing joints from bending...

This is why I wish the game was open source. Those who say "do something about it" don't realize that we can't. If we had code to work with, we COULD do something about it. There are plenty of hobby and professional programmers who play KSP and could help make the game run better. Look at any software or OS that became open source (WebOS) and how the homebrew community made improvements that would have probably never happened had it remained closed source.

Yeah my descent to Moho was quite steep. I'll be trying a different transfer next time... Science Jr, thermometer, barometer and 2 ScanSat modules. That's all I have unlocked so far in my 40% science career.... And the nuke gave me the most dV with LFO tanks. Not concerned about TWR, I just burn early. And this wasn't a landing mission, just orbit.

Is Linux ab... YES! But can I... YES! And will it... YES! What if I... YES! Linux, the only opera... YES!
-
It was a pretty simple probe. 450km PE, single nuke engine, some science onboard. Putting a maneuver node on the PE and pulling back to circularization showed me I needed 2700dV I think. I had 2300 left in my tank so I now have an egg of an orbit and can only scan the lower half of Dres when I get into range lol

Contemplating going back to playing Eve Online for a while, my other fav space game... I'm rich and can fly so many ships. Time to pull out the old stealth bomber and have some fun in wormholes I think....

God I wish I had access to KSP's source code... Optimizing code is my bag baby! Maybe if they overhaul 1.1 for U5 they can release the old source code, but probably not due to licensing etc... But it would be huge to get a whole community working on it and contributing to the base code...
