Ignorance of that statement is astounding. -
Project - sending a Jeb figurine into stratosphere

Rockets are totally irrelevant for this project, as was being explained in detail in earlier posts. -
Banned for being obvious.

[1.12.3+] RealChute Parachute Systems v1.4.9.5 | 20/10/24
lajoswinkler replied to stupid_chris's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I have a suggestion regarding the two conical parachutes you put on the top. They're too tall. It would be better if they looked similar to the shielded docking port. That's all. They work great. -

This is not technology, but an organism. Organisms can't deal with plasma. -
Project - sending a Jeb figurine into stratosphere
lajoswinkler replied to lajoswinkler's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Well, you could've just continued the original thread which already has tons of neccessary information like needed materials, designs concepts and goals, so no time is needed to be spent on repeating the known stuff. I'm not actually sure why did the idea die. Several people expressed the will not only to conduct parts of the process, but also to fund it by money or actual materials. Meanwhile, the CubeSat thread, which really isn't going anywhere (let alone to Phobos, lol) is still active. -
Godzilla's Atomic Breath - Feasible Explanation

"Feasible explanation" for something that can't exist in the first place? Sounds legit. -
Actual color photograph of comet 67P.
lajoswinkler replied to Fr8monkey's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Large objects with very low albedo actually look decently lit when viewed from distance because, with increasing distance, their angular diameter drops a lot more faster than the amount of light that reaches the sensor. Also, remember that the human eye is adaptable to even very low levels of light. Even with bright and dark stuff in the same field of vision, eye+brain can process an image quite well. I'm sure the comet would be quite apparent to a human eye at Rosetta's distances. What could suffer is eyes' ability to distinguish colours. With dropping luminosity, we're less and less able to perceive hue and saturation. I'm not sure how apparent would that be in this very case, but it has to be considered as a possibility. Consider these photos. Typical comets are just a bit more darker than coal. -
Alcoholism is something else. It's a severe addiction and not many people are truly alcoholics. I wasn't talking about them. Most of them would like to quit, but they can't. Hence they're addicts, obviously. I was referring to typical binge-drinking people. End of the work week and you see them in bars. In most European countries, especially post-socialist ones, the youth is horribly into such practice. They rarely drink during the week, but they get wasted at the weekend. I remember the time when this was something only Scandinavian countries were famous for, which was described as battling endemic anxiety because of disturbed melatonin levels when modern way of life clashes with northern nights and cloudy weather. It has spread since then. I've talked to my parents who were young in the 70s about this and they said there were obviously people who did binge drinking, but it wasn't nearly as widespread like today. Today it has become socially acceptable to drink enough to puke and lie in the park like a corpse, let alone get so wasted you don't remember what has happened. As someone who doesn't drink alcohol at all I find this disturbing, and I must say it does have a negative influence on my social life because it's difficult to be accepted in such society. I'm not one of those people who attack others because of their drinking, but most of them have a problem with my sobriety. I've talked to lots of people about this and they simply say they can't have fun without being at least tipsy anymore. They feel anxious, awkward, they lack the ability to have a meaningful and fun conversation, they clench their phones and don't look people in the eyes. It has become a widespread social disease. They are not addicted, they simply want to use ethanol as a weekend drug in order to be able to socialize and because they don't want to be outcasts and that's ....ing sad. They're the majority and they will not want a drug that removes the intoxication effect. What's even more scary is how even lots of sitcoms promote and glorify such way of life. What the future holds... I have no idea.

You would fail. Vast majority of people drink ethanol to intoxicate themselves. It's free drug and the cost of it is enormous per capita. If you remove the intoxication by something, rarely anyone would buy it. But kudos for positive thoughts.

Actual color photograph of comet 67P.
lajoswinkler replied to Fr8monkey's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Yeah, this is a simulated photo and in fact quite useless because no colour data has been released yet. They could've painted it green or purple. The brightness has been increased enormously, too. I wish ESA would release something an astronaut would actually see, holding on the probe. -
It's a simple question. Let's see the distribution around here.

Is leaving laptop constantly plugged in is killing it?
lajoswinkler replied to Aghanim's topic in Science & Spaceflight
It will make it last longer, and it won't be a small effect. In worst cases the battery drops to pathetic capacities after less than half a year, in other cases it's fine even after two years or more. -
Is leaving laptop constantly plugged in is killing it?
lajoswinkler replied to Aghanim's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Full charge is not advisable. High charge, yes, but not 100%. Optimum is 3/4 charge at 15-20°C and monthly charge to 100% and then discharge back to 3/4. The problem is that energy management software or the battery circuitry in many occasions simply doesn't support intelligent management, so it mostly goes 100, 99, 98, 99, 100, 99, 98, 97, 98, 99, 100 - it constantly charges and recharges in the almost full charge. That's lethal, and if the battery is being heated by the lousy heat management (HP, I'm looking at you!), it will drop in capacity in only a few months. -
The only thing it shares with KSP is space, and with Minecraft is "some cubes". That's it. Nothing else, move on.

One more I've captured from one movie. That's a painting by Jaroslav Panuška. Search for his paintings. Very disturbing stuff, which is weird for an artist who did most of his work in the first half of 20th century.

I'm not a fan of the series, but this is actually quite funny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXiY1_H7NkQ Here's my entry.

Is leaving laptop constantly plugged in is killing it?
lajoswinkler replied to Aghanim's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Yes, if the power management is set to constant 100% charge. It will ruin it in less than one year, and I'm being generous here. Source: experience and general knowledge in the field. Set the charge limit to 60% or, if your laptop is heating a lot, charge it to 60% and remove the battery and store it at few degrees below room temperature. Every few weeks, plug it in, charge it to 100%, then deplete it to 60%, remove, store. Don't drain it. -
Ja imam Windows 7 64-bit, a koristim 32-bitnu verziju KSP-a. Tu i tamo se sruÅ¡i, ali samo zbog velike koliÄÂine modova koje koristim. Bez njih radi bez problema.

I think my weird forum personality is reviving in me.
lajoswinkler replied to Sun's topic in The Lounge
That guy is trying so hard to sink in. Sinking in quicksand and mud is a myth. Those fluids are more dense than water, and humans float in water, therefore humans float in them, too. You can't sink and suffocate in them. The worst thing that can happen to you is to get stuck in it because those fluids aren't flowing normally. It's other animals which die in those, because they aren't smart as we are. They start panicking and then get locked inside. They get tired and they die from thirst or they're eaten by other animals. It's actually relatively easy to climb out. -
Bad news from NASA, should KSP follow suit?
lajoswinkler replied to kiwi1960's topic in Science & Spaceflight
True, enamel is basically glass, and the color is due to some ions. It will last as long as it can withstand thermal expansion and compression. If it's in a shade, that's probably millions of years. Not so sure about the ones in the sunshine. Monthly temperature oscillations are enormous. -

Both sides are blank because the material is not thick and opaque, and UV rays shine through. They are all very crumbly right now. A slight touch would probably tear them apart. -
The "h" dropping is common among rednecks around here.
