Bronze required tin who was hard to get in the Middle east, England was one source but it was very far away

Asia Minor was part of a trade network that Mesopotamia/the Middle East from the time of Middle Egypt. It had vast resources of tin, copper, and iron ore. Not to mention that, but the Minoans and the later Mycenaeans who superseded them were expert seamen. We know both Egypt, Babylon, and Hittite civilizations were getting their tin from Asia Minor because of mineralogy studies and archaeology. In fact, it was one of the reasons the Romans wanted to control Asia Minor so bad - the mineral/metal wealth of Asia Minor.

There's a common myth that trade was limited in the Ancient Era - and that is just that - a myth.

I want FTL so so badly.  But I also want the game to remain true to known science.  As true as is reasonable within the context of a video game.

With KSP2 going "interstellar" by 1.0, it is going to have to have FTL, unless we are talking about creating generational Kerbal spacecraft. But while that would be challenging, it would not be anything we cannot already do in KSP (original) now. It might be more of a challenge if there were some sort of stock life support we had to consider it as part of a generational journey. However, with the way KSP2 was introduced, they did say that FTL would be part of the stock game once it was complete.

So, I'm torn here.  Part of me wants Star Trek style warp drive.  But, at the same time I want it based in reality.

I totally get it. I do. I am a huge Star Trek fan; for my 35th birthday and while in graduate school, a few of my friends took me to a Star Trek convention (I was wearing a full captain's uniform from TOS), and I was "promoted" - complete with certificate - to commodore at that convention in Saint Louis! It was a blast! Anyway, yeah, I'd rather have realism over science fiction, too. But, in case I ever wanted a good ol' Star Trek-style warp, I am sure that some thrifty modder will give us that effect in KSP2!

I'm still holding out hope that the physicists will figure out how to get us past light speed.

Although I am an historian by vocation, I study the history of space travel and the ideas and theories behind manned spaceflight since the early 19th Century. Even though our species, humankind, has longed to reach out to the stars before that, spaceflight and the concept of it really became a part of the minds of many after Jules Verne made it fashionable reading. He seasoned the minds of his readers with the ideas of what could be possible. And with my love of science fiction fed in my youth by television shows such as Star Trek, Space 1999, UFO, and old sci-fi serials from the 1950s and 1960s (thanks to U.S. Armed Forces Radio and Television Services-Europe!), I've always looked towards our future (as a species) with hope and optimism.

I am hoping by your statement you are referring to real life physicists... so, that's how I've been crafting my response. To be honest, I was captivated by the television and watched with great anticipation every Skylab and shuttle launch until my time in college, the military, and return to college made it impossible to do so. Even now, I am amazed each time I am able to watch a cargo or passenger capsule dock with the ISS. But in reality, I am disappointed in how little, globally, we have progressed as a species in our efforts to colonize the Moon, Mars, and the asteroids in the Asteroid Belt. But then again, I am tainted by the many years of reading Azimov, Clarke, Sagan and the other great science fiction writers of the past.

I'm much more modest, I had all sorts of alarms, new science, a few part packs, graphical improvements, a mechjeb and, in general, thats all. Other than Kopernicus, there wasn't much that bothered me.

Mechjeb needed to be updated with each major game update because of game physics. I remember one time I didn't bother to update it (somewhere around 0.90) and boy, was I surprised! Not only did it not dock my shuttle with the station, but I left my computer to grab a soda to come back and find Mechjeb flew the shuttle through the station! There were parts everywhere!

To this day, in either my 1.3 or my 1.12 game, I never leave Mechjeb unattended!

I can't agree. Kopernicus always broke on any patch, but this was a deliberate act of the developer.

BDA also broke with nearly every patch. And there were some of the other mods that changed aerodynamics from the souposphere that KSP had in the beginning. Infernal Robotics also required updating, and I believe that with major updates (not the minor bug fixes), KAS/KIS also required updating frequently.

Yes, I exaggerated the 4,000 mods. At most, I always ran with about 120. :)

Some big updates did break most of the mods, but it didn't happen too often, once a year or two.

And this could still take hours to update the game if you didn't have the various GitHub repositories bookmarked. Yeah, those days way before CKAN... (I still prefer manually updating mods).

They're not 'broken' now though, are they? Quite honestly, the only reason I stayed with KSP for so many hours/years is because of the modding scene... The community have expanded the game to such a beautiful degree.

I started playing KSP (the original) in 0.22 and every update up through 1.10 always meant that mods would be broken. And wow, you should have seen the forums then! For those of us around long enough to remember those days, there were all kinds of posts and threads that were...

How can it be? How can each update to this game kill every single mod I have downloaded? The development team is stupid and do not know what they are doing! This game is broken! Every update should not break my 4,000 installed mods...

I wasn't a moderator back in those early days, but I certainly was a forum member and may have posted a few of those comments. And I can also tell you there's a huge mod graveyard within this forum of mod makers who walked away because of it. Some of my favorite mods disappeared between .24 and .90. Some of more of them disappeared between .90 and 1.12. Right now, I have two different games going in the original KSP - one in 1.3 and another in 1.12. The 1.3.0 has mods in it that no longer work in KSP past that version because the mod's creator left and no one adopted the mod afterwards. Modders volunteer their time and their talents to bring us their creativity - and we never need to take their efforts lightly.

I really do not want to see that pattern repeated in KSP2. I'd rather not have to mod it at all. But if I do, I'd rather have a more stable modding base than to have modders become frustrated and walk away from it as they did with the original game.

    That's what I mean.

Opening the game to modding - at least in the way you mean here - is a huge undertaking.

And one that’s ill advised. I remember the days in KSP (original) when every update meant every mod was broken!
Nah, let’s bypass that massive headache, please!

Although, I think my idea of what the basic foundations are is different.  I would include science.  And colonies and interstellar.  I actually want colonies and interstellar really badly.

Oh, me, too! I was hoping that a DLC for the original KSP would add this. The more that’s handled in stock KSP2, the less mods I’ll need .

I certainly take issue with the idea that the moderators are shutting down all critical threads. I think what they are trying to do is maintain some decorum.

I'm going to go way out on a limb here. I'm responding to this because it is a constant criticism we often see on the forum. I've not been asked to respond to this by anyone on the moderation team or here, and am responding to this on my own. My response reflects only on me.

As a moderator, it is important to realize that I am a typical forum member like many of you. I love Kerbal Space Program and I love being a part of this community. In fact, when I was first approached by HarvesteR to do the very first images for the threads of the month, I jumped at the opportunity. When I was asked if I wanted to be a moderator, I jumped at that opportunity, too. And if I am ever asked to do anything more for the community, I will jump for those opportunities as well. Why, you ask? Because I want to give back to the gaming community that has given me so much. Many of you old timers and a few of you y'ung 'ns are as close as family to me. And if I can do my part to make it a better place, then I will do all I can to make it so.

As a moderator, I (as the other moderators I work with as a team) have to make some tough calls. Not only do we have to follow the forum guidelines, there are more guidelines - moderation guidelines - we adhere to. Those rules are to keep the forum as PG-13 rated as we can and to keep it as inviting as we can to everyone. At times, this means we do have to step in and edit posts where we can, or if we cannot edit them, hide problematic posts so that the decorum of the forum is maintained. At times, we have to temporarily lock threads. And on rare occasions, we have to hide them from view if they become too toxic. We do none of these things lightly or without any serious consideration as we do it all as a team and discuss it as much as possible. And when we do have to take more punitive action against forum members, it is not something we take great pleasure in doing. It is usually the last resort. But it is part of the responsibility we took on when each of us agreed to become a moderator.

There are times the position is rewarding. I enjoy helping out fellow forum members find mods they are looking for, problems with game or mod installations, or the like. I enjoy playing the forum games and good conversations just as any other forum member surely does. But there are days it sucks day old gym socks when the more serious aspects of moderation duties are forced to happen. I'd prefer if we could do things in other ways, like discussing our differences, than the name calling, the personal attacks, and other forum guideline breaking things we see that forces moderator action. For the most part, many of our forum members can do this very thing. Some cannot help it. So, in the meantime, do what you can do to make your corner of the forum a better place.

Thanks for putting up with my rant - oh, and by the way, I think that once KSP2 is released in its final form, it will be a good game. Remember, in the gaming world (or at least until recent times) an early release game did not count as actually being released until it reached 1.0. :)

So, to answer the OP, what will drive me away from KSP? Not the community, I have made too many friends. Not the game, because I will play KSP as long as I have a system that can run KSP (the original) and believe that KSP2 will be fine. And I am eagerly anticipating that once KSP2 is in its final form, we will see a KSP3. So, yeah, I am here to stay...

  9. Okay, folks, your friendly community moderator here...

I had to step in and put on my moderator hat and remove a few posts here. Just to let you know why, they were removed for one or more of the following reasons:

    • They were off-topic. The OP is literally "Please, give the community KSP1's source code... Since the development team would and will be focused at KSP2, could you give us the source code, so we might look at it and, maybe, fix some things in it to make KSP1 a better game. I'm begging you to do it."
    • Responses to the OP should be either in support of or against this idea, not beating each other in the head and verbally abusive to one another. Insulting comments are never allowed on this forum. In fact, we have Forum Guideline 2.2d that states: Insults and threats, stalking, bullying or any other behavior construed to be of a potentially rude, slanderous, accusatory, combative or otherwise harassing nature to/of another person. So, yeah, we gotta watch how we address others. It's always okay to address the comments, never okay to attack the forum member. Some of the comments came close to attacking the person.
    • The posts removed appeared to be arguing for the sake of argument. Yeah, let's not do that.
    • Nesting spoilers within spoilers within spoilers makes it more difficult for moderators to do our job. So, yeah, those comments had to go, too. Especially when they do not contribute to the overall conversation and are also off-topic.

Anyhow, now that all that has been taken care of, let's go back to discussing the pros and cons of the OP, shall we? Just keep it within the guidelines...

  10. Okay, folks, your friendly moderator again. Tempers are getting high. Let’s keep the focus on the game and less on whose opinion on transparency or lack of transparency is right/wrong or just plain nerfed.

As a reminder, no personal attacks, threats of violence, or any other violations of the forum guidelines. So, have fun, engage in healthy debate, but stay in the lines.

Some posts have been removed that were not within the forum guidelines.

  11. Hey, folks - I hate to have to put on my moderator hat, but kinda have to for just a moment. Long before I was a moderator, I, too was a regular forum player back when KSP (the original) was in 0.22. And believe me, there were tons of bugs, a lot like we are experiencing now in KSP2. Some of the bugs were downright funny and others were infuriating, often crashing the game to the desktop and corrupting the saved game file. Ah, yeah, those were the days.

KSP2 is no different. We all knew there would be bugs with KSP2 being in EA. And while you are free to disagree with one another, personally attacking one another is never the right thing to do. Also, being rude is also never a good thing. And while we are on the topic of those forum guidelines, those are still applicable on ANY and all parts of the forum. So, when any member of the moderation team does make a decision to merge threads or hide posts, the decision was not made in haste or without great thought. But we have an obligation to follow the rules of moderation we've been given. And as Forum Guideline 3.3 states:

    Quote

Do not openly discuss action (or inaction) taken by the moderators (bans, warnings etc.). If you have concerns about a moderator action, see 3.4 below.

    3.4 Contesting moderation action

All of the moderators are active community members who try to set a good example and apply the guidelines as appropriately as possible, but they are only human and can make mistakes from time to time. If you disagree with something they have done, please contact them or a senior moderator privately, and the issue will be re-examined.

So, with that, we have had to remove a few more posts from this thread.

Please continue to keep the discussion on the topic of the OP; do not toss out personal attacks, and please do not publicly discuss moderation actions taken by the moderation team.
