*This post has been brought to you by one of the most OCD people on the Forum. Sorry if any of the below statements bother you.* Hello everyone! This is UpsilonAerospace. Recently, there have been quite a few little things that have been bugging me immensely with the Vehicle Assembly Building and the Spaceplane Hangar. If someone at SQUAD took maybe fifteen minutes to mop these up, the game would look a lot more polished and professional, in my opinion. The lack of this polish is quite worrying to me, and (with all due respect to SQUAD) it comes off as shoddy and careless. I should mention before I get any further that the Engineer's report and other features are very nice... but they don't help my frustration much. So, here's what I dislike about the VAB/SPH. > The Clouds. It's adding insult to injury that we can't get clouds in 1.0, except for the ones hanging outside of the VAB/SPH. This is misleading to new players ("The sky looks different in the VAB/SPH than it does in the game! Has some part of my install gone wrong?") and it's been there for far too many versions. > Part Rotation. When you mouse over the parts arranged on the right side of the screen, there is an enlarged image of the part rotating. With some of these (the Mk2 Lander-Can), the part doesn't rotate about its center, but instead traces a wide loop: the 'center of revolution' appears to be the hatch. With some of these (Big ol' "Mammoth" engine cluster), the part is located too high up, so that the top of it is off the little image. With some of them (the Command Seat), there is no image of the part at all. This is one of those things that could probably be fixed without much trouble, so it's strange that it still exists. > Part Specs. For many engines, the basic part specifications next to the part image have a scroll bar next to them, as they are ever-so-slightly too large to fit on the lines provided. If the scroll bar is used, the additional information to the right of it flickers in and out precariously. > Grammar Errors. There are some pretty serious grammar errors in part descriptions. My personal favorite is this one, in the 'Flea' booster's description: "The RT-5 can be seen in use at many space programs, perhaps possibly because it is the only option for many space programs, but nevertheless, this small booster provides a nice kick to launch small payloads to considerable heights." This sentence is a train wreck. Other errors that appear commonly are joining an independent clause to a dependent clause using a comma and the word "and" (seen in the Mobile Processing Lab, among other places); starting or ending the description with a sentence fragment (very common); and improper lists ("The 'Drogue' parachute is small, deploys high up, and certainly not enough to stop you smashing into the ground..." - Radial-Mount Drogue 'Chute). >Reusing Descriptions. This is especially true with the structural wings. Structural Wings of type B, C, and D and Swept Wings of types A and B all have the exact same, incredibly undescriptive two-sentence description. Likewise, the five types of Wing Connectors say only "A vaguely wing-shaped board;" "A vaguely wing-shaped board. Use at your own risk;" or "Found in a trash bin next to the wing factory." All three of the Mk3 cargo bays say the exact same bland little statements as well. Typing a description should take only a couple of minutes, so reusing descriptions strikes me as lazy (sorry). It seems as if this problem has only gotten worse as the versions progressed: the earlier parts' descriptions seem to be much more high-quality that the ones used today. It would be so easy to fix these things. Unless you know something about programming that I don't (which is definitely possible), it seems as if these little issues would take only a couple of minutes to address. And yet, they weren't addressed... for KSP's biggest release. This is one of my top priorities in the coming hotfix. Can you please, please take a little while to fix these things, guys? If you find any other errors with "the little things," please let me know. Sure, they're little, but when combined, they become much larger. Thanks for your time. -Upsilon

Hello everyone! My name is UpsilonAerospace (you may know me). Today, I'm going to start a long, painful, grindy trek towards the conquest of space! This mission report will likely stretch into the dozens of pages, take months to complete, and be (to put it nicely) more interesting at some times than others. I'm not sure why I'm doing it, but I'm doing it anyway. And you can follow along. Realistic Space Program: Career Done Very Differently! A Kerbal Space Program Experiment ~~~ The goal of this project is to create an accurate representation of a space program. I'll try to 'hack' career mode to properly represent a real-life space center. While I won't try for accurate replicas of various space missions, I'll nonetheless play the game as if it was real life. I'll try to keep my Kerbals as safe as possible, and I'll follow a 'logical' progression of steps that nonetheless never happens in the average career game. ~~~ So, what does this mean? I'll start off with a "rover" that uses command pod torque and use it to drive around the KSC. I'll also have a Kerbal walk around the space center, collecting information (Science) about the various parts of our Tier-1 launchpad and buildings. After all, how can we launch things from the space center if we haven't even seen the buildings up close? This will (hopefully) eventually give enough Science to unlock a Stayputnik. I can then build some unmanned planes to test aerodynamics around the KSC - and hopefully give me funds for setting altitude and distance records. (I don't think that ground exploration will give me any funds, but at least the overall cost of this is very low.) I can then build a manned plane... and test it with a Stayputnik before flying a Kerbal. I'll likely use some of these planes to survey the immediate area. By this time, I'll likely have some rudimentary science experiments that I can run in the various biomes surrounding the KSC: the Grasslands, Shores, and Sea. Finally, I'll begin to build unmanned rockets and flying them into suborbital space. I'll do my best to return the rockets in one piece: after all, it's dangerous to drop pieces on the space center! I'll build a craft with an empty capsule and fly it successfully twice before putting a Kerbal on it. After this, this space program will begin to look a bit more typical, with some exceptions. I won't fly an untested design with a Kerbal on it. I'll try not to drop any parts without a parachute, especially if they're falling onto a land mass. I won't do part-test contracts with manned craft. If my Kerbals are flying for more than a week, I'll provide multiple pods per Kerbal for a bit of stretching room. If I strand a Kerbal, I'll have to rescue him as soon as possible. If a Kerbal dies, I'll have to fix the problem and then test the rocket unmanned to make sure a Kerbal would survive. I'll try to rotate Kerbals, especially after difficult or record-setting flights. In short, I'll try to be as safe and responsible as possible. Yep, this is going to be a long adventure. ~~~ I'll try to post YouTube videos, photos, written dialogue, and other forms of 'mixed media' to make the experience worth watching. I have a feeling that this will take about as long as Scott Manley's Interstellar Quest... I sincerely hope not. Anyway, please let me know what you think! I'll probably have the first installment up tomorrow. Thanks for checking this out! Wish me luck. -Upsilon

A brief letter to SQUAD about the website: Dear SQUAD, If you scroll down to the bottom of the KSP website, there's a picture of a rather nasty-looking (sorry) rocket made in some older version of the game; it even has the red launch tower behind it. Also, there's clouds in the 'atmosphere' above it. Clearly, this isn't the version of KSP that we know and love. I'd love to see Kerbal Space Program properly represented on the Kerbal Space Program website, which means a rocket made in a version of the game less than a year and a half old. Also, no clouds. Would you mind at least considering these changes? Other than that, I love the new website and am looking forward to playing KSP 1.0. (By the way, sorry if this has already been mentioned. I just got back from college and haven't had time to read the entirety of this thread yet.) Sincerely, Upsilon

I probably won't be posting on the Forum any time soon (except to update the Oscar-B awards). I'm predicting that people trying to download from the main site will crash everything for about an hour. There'll be angry posts all around, and once the dust settles, some people will have problems with a bad download. They'll have to re-download, and they won't be happy. About five hours after release, someone will find a game-breaking bug with a certain combination of parts or maybe Career mode. Because SQUAD will be inundated with low-quality bug reports, there will be many more bugs that are found but not easy to replicate. There will be a lot of bile addressed towards SQUAD and its lack of wider testing. SQUAD will scramble to make a hotfix, eventually producing it close to a week after the update. The magic will have been lost. Opposition towards SQUAD will be at an all-time high. The Forums will be full of sometimes-heated discussions, just as a great number of new players enter and further disturb the 'normal balance.' I really, really hope this won't happen... but I'm worried that it will. Judging by previous updates, it seems like this scenario is all too likely. So, here's a moment of silence, not only for the old KSP, but for the Forum before 1.0 was released. See you guys on the other side. Best of luck. -Upsilon

Remember the good ol' days? I've been playing since 0.14, and KSP has come so far since then! It's almost unbelievable to go back to the old versions and see what was missing. ...Thanks for sticking with this game, SQUAD. Your 325?-page thread means that there's a lot of people who appreciate your efforts. (oh, and am I the only person here who isn't spam-posting? That's rather a shame...) -Upsilon

I'm going to make a series called "Doing Career Correctly!" in 1.0. My first craft will literally be two Mk1 command pods in an hourglass shape, with some Mystery Goo attached. I'll use it to roll around the KSC and collect Science. It will be very grindy. By this point, I'll hopefully have enough Science to get a Stayputnik, which I'll use for planes, along with a thrust-limited Flea booster and some of the little control surfaces. I'll fly around the KSC with my li'l remote-controlled plane, setting some altitude and speed records in the process. I'll then gradually unlock plane parts and maybe even a cockpit. After I can fly manned planes (hopefully using actual jet engines!). I'll play with those and break more records. Maybe I'll try out a parabola into the upper atmosphere and see how well it works. Then, I'll go ahead, grab a probe core and some SRB's, and try to get the thing into suborbital space and back safely. If I can manage that, it's time for Val to get off her couch and be a pilot at last! I won't fly manned missions to anywhere unless there's a successful unmanned mission first. I'll actually build dedicated rigs to test new parts (only one part at a time, because if I test two and the mission fails, I won't know the cause). I won't let any debris crash on land, for fear of disturbing the Kerbals who (presumably) live there. I will never terminate a mission, revert a flight, or quicksave. If a Kerbal is stranded somewhere, it is my job to immediately rescue him/her. If a Kerbal dies, I won't fly any more Kerbals until several successful unmanned tests are done. I'll provide two seats per Kerbal if a mission lasts more than a week. I'll try not to fly a Kerbal again until three or four other Kerballed missions have passed. No Better than Starting Manned, no mods, no nothing. I will play Kerbal Space Program like it is a real space program, and it will be incredibly difficult. But, at the very least, I'll be even more proud when I land my first Kerbal on the Mun or send him to Duna. If I don't go insane first. ...would anyone even watch this, if I made a YouTube series that didn't show too much of the grinding? -Upsilon [EDIT: On-topic, I rarely watch Twitch streams, but I tuned in this morning. Watched for about five minutes and was incredibly disappointed. I share the sentiments of many on this thread...]

10+ Things to do While Waiting for 1.0
BagelRabbit replied to SpenSpaceCorp's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Build a 2.7km high tower of SRB's and be amazed at the carnage and the destruction! ...and then light up those boosters, causing a massive air strike, hundreds of simultaneous explosions, and other glorious fun! Go on. Do it. You know you want to. -
Eve, Jool, Dres?, Duna?, Kerbin, Eeloo, Moho. [edit: derp.] Just food for thought. -Upsilon
-
Ooh! That looks cool! (I'm not sure 1.0 will fix it, though.) Recently, I've been playing around with symmetry: KSP: Ten-Plus-Sided Symmetry! (3:53) ...as well as having a lot of fun building and then destroying giant towers of SRBs. KSP: Tower of Death! (3:49) Lighting the SRB Tower! (1:21) ...so yeah. I can't wait for 1.0! -Upsilon

The Oscar-B Awards! (Results Are Out!!)
BagelRabbit replied to BagelRabbit's topic in Kerbal Network
Hi Rufledt! First off, if you want to judge, don't be afraid to send in an application! It's entirely possible for someone to be both a nominee and a judge. If you decided to judge, for example, you would rank all nominations in all categories... except for your own channel. Because channel rankings will be done by taking the mean of the judges' scores, you'll have just as good a chance of winning as anyone else. ~~~ After some careful thought, I've decided that you can send in one nomination per category. This was recommended by Hazard-ish and some other people seemed to want it too... so I decided to expand the rules. If you've already sent in one nomination, feel free to send in more. I would strongly recommend that you create a new post, rather than updating your earlier one, because I may not see your updated nomination in the sea of posts. Sorry for the continuous rule revisions. I hope you can understand that I'm trying to make the competition as good as it can be. Thanks for sticking with me. -Upsilon -
The Oscar-B Awards! (Results Are Out!!)
BagelRabbit replied to BagelRabbit's topic in Kerbal Network
Attention all Oscar-B nominees! Thanks to the efforts of ImJake, "Nominee" badges are now available to all nominees of the competition! Here's what the badges look like: To place this badge in your signature, simply copy the following: Thank you very much! Remember, placing this badge in your signature will both look cool and show that you make great videos! What more can you ask for? ~~~ So far, there's only been one application for judging! Please send me PMs if you're interested. Anyone can apply, even people who have been nominated for Oscar-B's already. Please send in those applications soon! I'm looking forward to reading them. ~~~ ...and keep those submissions coming! It's great to see all of the submissions that have been made so far, but there's still plenty more excellent members of the YouTube community to recognize! (Incidentally, do you want to be able to send in more than one nomination? I think that this has been one of the limiting factors to this competition so far.) Thanks for your input! -Upsilon -
I'll miss being able to fly things like this: It was nice to safely return a Kerbal to Kerbin with only a fraction of a Lander-Can's mass. Rest in peace, Wee Shuttle Mk2.

The Oscar-B Awards! (Results Are Out!!)
BagelRabbit replied to BagelRabbit's topic in Kerbal Network
Alright, guys! I have some important news. ~~~ Applications for judging are now open. If you want to judge the Oscar-B's, please answer the questions presented on the original post and PM your answers to me. Applications are only accepted until May 27, so don't delay! I'm looking forward to your applications. ~~~ In addition, I think there needs to be some sort of Oscar-B badge that you can place in your signature! I would love to see a "Nominee" badge, a "Finalist" badge, a "Winner" badge, and a "Judge" badge. They should probably all be different colors and have a picture of an Oscar-B tank on them. (Although if you have a different idea, I would love to see it!) I'm wondering whether anyone with sufficient technical know-how would be able to do this? (I would, but I can't really design anything beyond MS Paint. ) If anyone is interested, send me a PM! I'll try to delete some of my previous PMs so I have room for all of this... ~~~ Finally, keep those entries coming, y'all! The list already look great, but there are loads of other people who deserve some attention as well - some that I know well and some that I'd love to know more about. (Oh, and I should mention that if your nomination hasn't appeared on the leaderboard, kindly submit it again. I'm doing my best to keep track of all of these entries.) Thanks, everyone! -Upsilon -
I'd bet my own $0.02USD that you can use the drill on the "fuel tanks" scattered around the launchpad to refuel your craft...

The Oscar-B Awards! (Results Are Out!!)
BagelRabbit replied to BagelRabbit's topic in Kerbal Network
Y'know, I'd have to say I agree with you here. I do think that the larger YouTubers will get over-represented, which would be a bit of a shame for the lesser-known but equally good YouTubers. As much as I'd love to judge this event myself, though, I don't think that would be fair either. I've gotten to know some YouTubers on this list quite well and like them a lot already, whereas I've barely heard of others. In addition, I have my own personal preferences when it comes to videos; others may not share my opinions. Finally, I'm worried that some people may be irritated if they're not chosen as a finalist or a winner, and may take out their irritation on me (whether it's warranted or not). I'll probably create a small judging group that can do a good job ranking YouTubers fairly. I would love for the group to be primarily comprised of YouTubers who have some experience... I'll probably write up an application form and attach it to the original post Soon. In the meantime, keep those submissions coming folks! -Upsilon Oh, and this is my 1,000th post! What a neat milestone to reach. -
The Oscar-B Awards! (Results Are Out!!)
BagelRabbit replied to BagelRabbit's topic in Kerbal Network
I should probably post the judging system on the OP, shouldn't I? Because there will be a lot of varied entries in many categories, I'm going to make a series of polls that all forum-goers can participate in. For the first poll, each person will select the three best entries in each category. After this is completed, the three entries that receive the most votes will move on to the 'Finals' round, where the best entry of the three will be chosen! These polls will likely begin a week after nominations end, to provide some chance for discussing the entries in detail and selecting the best one... and also because I would have scheduling conflicts otherwise (Curse you, Finals!). In other words, the community will decide who receives the Oscar-B's. This also means that you can safely nominate my channel without any risk of me declaring it the winner... (hint hint) I'm still deciding what channel to feature. There are a lot of them that haven't gotten mentioned yet, but that really should: Felsmak and Avera9eJoe for Best Underwatched Channel, Andrew Hansen for Best Inactive Channel, heretic391 or Marex333 for Best Showcase Channel... as a matter of fact, SQUAD's official channel hasn't been mentioned yet! The list goes on and on. -Upsilon -
Starting youtube, of course I have to play KSP!
BagelRabbit replied to Rufledt's topic in KSP Fan Works
Hello Rufledt! I must say that Gnou was being a bit harsh. That wasn't bad, especially for a first attempt! So, here's some tips you can use in the future, if you want: Watch other KSP YouTubers, especially people doing more-or-less what you do, and note what they do well and what they could do better. This will actually help a lot! Pretend that your microphone is your good friend and speak to it conversationally. I named my microphone "Sam" and drew a little happy face on it. I know it sounds weird, but it really works. Start off making videos where you know about everything that will happen. If there are staging errors, add them deliberately (it's cheating, I know, but it will help your commentary). If you showcase a craft, play with it a lot before you make the video and have a more-or-less solid 'flight plan.' Then, make a brief overview of what you want to cover. Writing a script is okay, but I don't recommend it. Instead, write out some bullet points about what you will cover and fill in the rest with spontaneous dialogue. If there are some difficult terms for you, write them down! It helps a lot. If this isn't working, it might be best to go Danny2462-style and just add in text boxes to describe what's going on. You seem to be pretty good with adding in text boxes at the right moments, so this could probably work for you too. Above all, remember to have fun! That's what really matters. Oh, and I'm going to shamelessly plug my channel as a Thing to Look At. I regularly do short little videos with commentary, and I started off kinda 'meh.' I've gotten better though, thanks to the tips I mentioned above! My channel can be found here. Best of luck! -Upsilon -
The Oscar-B Awards! (Results Are Out!!)
BagelRabbit replied to BagelRabbit's topic in Kerbal Network
Alright, I've updated the nomination entries. I'm worried that this will become even more tedious than the Light-Green Group! This took a good thirty-five minutes to update, and I'm still not sure all of the links are correct. Why in the world did I want to start this thing at perhaps the busiest week of my entire semester?! I've decided to alphabetize the entries. It seems a little more fair that way: instead of everyone's first picks being at the top of the list, they're now more scattered throughout. Besides, my borderline OCD was nagging me about it. Oh, and to address a couple of questions and statements asked so far: I'm going to add a Best Series category as soon as I'm done with this post. Thanks for the suggestion, TheBigFish! Thanks for featuring this thing in a Twitter, SQUAD! I'm quite honestly thrilled. If you win an Oscar-B, you get the craft file of the trophy on the original post. I would love to send a 3D-printed Oscar-B tank (or even the 3D-printed trophy!) but unfortunately, I lack money and resources. If someone has either, PM me. -Upsilon -
The Oscar-B Awards! (Results Are Out!!)
BagelRabbit replied to BagelRabbit's topic in Kerbal Network
Alright, I think I've gotten everyone's requests. The only thing I didn't add was Danny2462 as an 'artistic channel' because those are supposed to be for cinematics and stuff, not silly and universe-breaking contraptions. I'll pick this back up in the morning. Once again, thanks for all of the requests! I've already discovered a couple new channels to watch... -Upsilon -
The Oscar-B Awards! (Results Are Out!!)
BagelRabbit replied to BagelRabbit's topic in Kerbal Network
Thanks! I think that when (not if) you guys get nominated, you're not unlikely to win in your respective fields. I personally doubt I'll win anything, as my channel doesn't even really fit into one of the categories listed above. Oh well. I'm probably going to create several videos, as suggested by benjee10 in a PM. First, I'll work on briefly showcasing every channel that has been nominated. Maybe just a 5-second clip of one of their videos that strikes me as cool. I'll probably take a preliminary vote and narrow each category to the 3 or 5 best entries, and make a longer and more detailed version of those. Hopefully, at this point I can actually have each of the YouTubers on the list make a 20-second-ish clip of why to select their channels/videos, which I can then stitch together. (I doubt the giants of KSP would respond to my humble requests, but it's worth a try!) Finally, I'll make a video showcasing the winners, along with sending them a .craft file of their shiny Oscar-B awards. I would 3d-print them, but that would be very expensive and I don't have all that much money. So, that's my tentative plan. I'll probably create a poll for each of the categories via Google or some other software. Luckily, I have a month to figure it all out. -Upsilon -
The Oscar-B Awards! (Results Are Out!!)
BagelRabbit replied to BagelRabbit's topic in Kerbal Network
Thanks for your entries so far, guys! I really appreciate them. I'm going to say 'no' to Twitch right now, because I view it as a bit of a different genre, and one outside the scope of this contest. Maybe after this is over, I'll do one of these for Twitch. Also, I'm not sure whether HOCGaming counts as a KSP YouTube channel anymore, since he decided to not make any more KSP videos. Should I put him under "Best Inactive Channel," because he's inactive in KSP right now? -
The Oscar-B Awards! (Results Are Out!!)
BagelRabbit replied to BagelRabbit's topic in Kerbal Network
Added. Even though the greats of KSP (Scott Manley, Nassault, Danny2462, Heretic391, etc.) will likely be chosen first, there are a lot of other channels out there. I hope that this nomination process will uncover some real gems that few people know about. Thanks for your submissions! [EDIT:] Unfortunately, you're only allowed to nominate one person and/or one video (see rules.) I'll just put you down for Scott Manley because Danny's been mentioned already, mmkay? -

(Isn't it nice?) To grab your very own 'Winner' badge, simply copy and paste the following line of text: Trophies coming soon! Hello everyone! I’m UpsilonAerospace. As you well know, Kerbal Space Program 1.0 is coming out soon. I can say without a doubt that the many and varied YouTubers in our community have contributed to KSP’s success. They’ve taught players new tips and tricks, showed off some seriously awesome and often inspiring creations, and made people laugh and cry. I want to take a moment to commemorate the many YouTubers who help make our game great. It’s time to find the best YouTubers in KSP. Are you ready? The Oscar-B Awards! ~~~ This is a community contest to show off the best YouTubers in KSP. The winners in each category will get a personalized .craft file of the trophy shown above, but more importantly, they will receive a little more fame and recognition in the Kerbal community. Because all of the entries to this challenge will likely be great, I strongly recommend that you check them all out and maybe even like their videos or subscribe to their channels! After all, they’ve all spent a lot of work and deserve some attention. There will be two stages to this process: nominating entries and voting for them. The first stage, which will last for two weeks, involves submitting names of KSP YouTubers and YouTube videos that fit into select categories. The second stage, which will last for another two weeks, is simply voting for the best entry in each category. (These dates may be open to revision, depending on the number of entries received and the overall voting process.) ~~~ There are a few rules that must be followed when nominating people. Please read these carefully! Rules: Each person is only allowed to nominate one person and/or one video per category for this award. If someone has already been nominated for a category and you nominate him for the same category, you’re wasting your nomination! You can nominate the same person to multiple categories, if appropriate. If you see an Up-and-Coming YouTuber who also qualifies for the Best Comedy Channel award, for example, feel free to nominate the person for both! You can vote for yourself, if you want. Your nomination must include at minimum: The title of the YouTube channel, a link to the channel, and the awards you are nominating the channel for. If you’re nominating a video, then please substitute the channel link with either a link to the video or the embedded video. If you want to explain why you nominated the person and/or video, it’s likely your nomination may gain more votes! I'm going to repeat the first rule, because it's important and not many people seem to be heeding it. Each person is only allowed to nominate one person and/or one video per category for this award. If someone has already been nominated for a category and you nominate him for the same category, you’re wasting your nomination! Got it? Great. Asteroids, the one stop portable gas stations of KSP 1.0
BagelRabbit replied to Rocket Farmer's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Hoorah! My asteroid-grappling skills are actually going to come in handy! Right now, the only thing I can use them for is causing miniature extinction events and using them as billboards for Hype. But why stop at mere 'fuel depots?' I'm going to mount an engine on an asteroid and drain it dry flying about the solar system! Once the asteroid is almost empty, I can just ditch it and find another. It will be enormously impractical but tons of fun! -Upsilon
