1. You realize that there's another, identical thread that's literally fewer than ten threads down from yours. Here it is. In the future, please try to do a brief search of the first few pages of a subforum before posting, so that you can find any possible related threads. [EDIT: Ninja'd with the exact same information. I'm losing my touch. ]
2. So, I guess that I should include this video. It was a bit of a side project for me, that just happened to turn into a flying car. (That idea seems to be on my mind more and more nowadays.) I think that this is the Smallest Flying Car Ever Built with Stock Parts. It's a long and painful-to-recite distinction, but I'll take it! Work on some other flying cars will resume soon. Let me know if you want the .craft file for anything I've released so far... sorry for not providing them earlier. -Upsilon
3. Link to the KSP wiki's "Media Page": http://wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/Kerbal_Space_Program_Media_Page It's a bit dusty and in bad need of repair, so please do your best to perk it back up
4. Someone already did it. (I wish it was me, but I don't have a wiki account). Also, no one's mentioned me so far...
5. Alright, here's my rough pass at creating a soundscape for this thing. It doesn't have the Kennedy speech (as it was too ingrained in the original audio) but I would have to say that this guy gives a better "atmosphere" to the art piece... The original song was my own: the Spheres of Legend KSP cover, backwards and 400% slower. It's Creative Commons... If you like this modification, I would be happy to further tweak the audio to your specifications. Looking forwards to opinions - -Upsilon
6. I'm not entirely sure whether either of the music choices are better. Gimme a moment and I'll edit in something eerie that will do well... the video will be low-quality but you'll get the gist of it. I really like this thing so far.
7. If you're talking about having the return vehicle already landed when the astronauts arrive: yes, this is a feasible thought that has seriously been considered by NASA for their Mars program. If you're talking about having astronauts "parachute" down to the lander in their space-suits: There are only really three places in the solar system besides Earth that have an atmosphere with a solid and explorable surface below: Venus, Mars, and Saturn's moon Titan. On Venus, there are a number of very good reasons why not to go there. To briefly recap: It's really hot, it's got an absurdly thick atmosphere, it rains sulfuric acid in the upper atmosphere and "snows" metal on the surface, etc., etc., etc. In addition, the atmosphere would quickly thicken, subjecting any paratrooper to enormous G-loads and temperatures of thousands of degrees. You would probably die long before you reached the ground. On Mars, the atmosphere is far too thin to rely solely on parachutes to reach the surface. If you were to pull a conventional human-rated Earth parachute in the lower layers of the atmosphere, you would hit the ground at over two hundred miles per hour. If you had some sort of retro-rocket belt, then the scheme could work... although with all of the variables involved in landing on a planet, it likely wouldn't. A human can only carry so much fuel and guidance sensors around his or her waist. On Titan, the atmosphere would be rather thick, enough to allow a parachute. However, entering the atmosphere would provide massive G-loads and high temperatures, both of which would make it quite difficult to survive. Keep in mind, the fastest that any human being has ever been while travelling in free-fall is a "paltry" 800-ish miles per hour. The slowest possible entry speed from orbit would be almost ten times that fast. In other words: it's possible, but highly unsafe and highly unlikely. [EDIT: Ninja'd and Ninja'd and Ninja'd. I need to learn to type faster.]
8. Hmmmm... I would have to pick these guys as the most difficult-to-explain events that happened in KSP: Kraken-baiting: How to get Five-sided Symmetry (though it no longer works, so far as I can tell): ...and a newer one: Floating RCS Ports. I seem to find a lot of these things...
9. From the website: "We now have 2 major changes to the ThunderStruck Aircraft." Here's the new iteration. Apparently, the changes are (1) More SAS, and (2) No I-beam in front. If you thought the last picture was done by any other means than KSP, then... well... this one settles it. Between the SAS modules, the solar panels near the nose, the probe core, etc., etc., I can say with 100% certainty that this was modelled in everyone's favorite game. Now, if you want to see a real rocket-plane with half a chance of working, here's the site you want. It's the (somewhat naughty) LOHAN Balloon team, and their attempts to fly a rocket-plane at 100k feet. This will be fun. ~~~ [EDIT: Apparently, there will be fundraisers soon. Why do I think that this is a miserable scam?]
10. Dear Three1415, If you do continue along the dark and mysterious road of part-clipping, be sure to try to clip a little Roundified Monopropellant Tank into a Kerbal's head, so that his face looks round and white. I would love to see that, and would gladly shower you with Reputation. Here's a video of my Jetpack. It has a lot of RCS fuel, enough for almost two minutes of continued power. I like it a lot...
11. It's got an absurd amount of Delta-V (900 m/s in the atmosphere?) because of the fact that monopropellant seems to be 'denser' than regular LiquidFuel - you can fit more of it in a small space. I've landed it on the VAB helipad twice, though it broke one of those times on account of the fact that this thing's SAS is way overpowered and thus it's a bit difficult to control. I'll probably have a video out later today...
12. I think this thread will be locked soon. That being said: I have a friend that believes that crop circles are really aliens seeking contact. I have to explain to him several fine, nuanced points: 1) Crop circles started out really simple and then gradually became more complicated. This strongly suggests that the humans did them: if they were made by some sort of alien life-form, they would have always been quite complex, with little change over time. 2) Crop circles look really very different from one another, from place to place. If aliens were coming dozens of light-years to see us, you would think that their message would be displayed uniformly around the globe, and that there would be little to no variation in crop circles. Instead, the aliens seem to be sending mixed messages... 3) Crop circles are almost invariably "done" at night. You would think that if aliens wanted to contact humanity, they would likely create their crop circles when humans were active and more likely to see or hear that something was happening in their fields. 4) Crop circles are just too artsy. All of the messages that humanity deliberately sends into the cosmos are extremely technical, giving details such as the Earth's position in the Solar System, a symbol of a hydrogen atom, DNA nucleotides, and other items that could potentially be relatable to aliens. Making circles in a field lacks this sort of planned foresight. There are virtually no 'crop circles' that give the same sort of information as, say, the Arecibo message. 5) At this point, many crop circles are Photoshopped. It's not that difficult to do, and there's no real penalty for making these sorts of images. (The people who believe in crop circles will actually defend these images to their dying breath.) 6) Why would aliens go to all that trouble, anyway? Flying trillions of miles through space and back to effectively just prank a farmer with meaningless circles would be a miserable waste of time, energy, and effort. 7) Crop circles are never found in national parks or other areas where destroying large amounts of native vegetation is considered a crime and could be heavily prosecuted. There are several grasslands national parks that are expansive and would be a pretty good "canvas" for aliens, yet they remain undisturbed. I could go on all day about this, but I won't waste my breath. Crop circles are man-made, end of story.
13. There's a thin line between VTOLs and jetpacks, and I think I crossed it. Still, though, isn't this thing neat?!
14. Sorry to necro this old thread, but I made a smaller VTOL... and this one really is a jetpack! [TEASER IMAGE] (so beautiful!) [/TEASER IMAGE] I wonder if I should start a new thread for this new craft, once I've worked the bugs out. At any rate...
15. Thanks! It actually takes a lot of work to get these to function properly, and I'm still ironing out some bugs, but I'm glad you like what I have so far! It's funny. I didn't originally want these to be adorable little cars, but they just turned out that way. I like low-mass cars, they're easier to get into the air with fewer parts. Maybe that's what makes these things so adorable...
16. I feel compelled to post this thing, since we're talking about small VTOLs... At any rate: This thing is pretty cool! I would love to see some pictures of it in the daytime, though... and I would recommend putting on lots of batteries/solar panels instead of the RTGs that are on there, as it's much lighter that way. Looking forwards to any future designs! -Upsilon
17. I think that this is the closest equivalent to a Hype Train that exists. Behold... the Stardust Express! (The guy who built it is named Dave, and I launch my rockets at the same site that he does, so we know each other pretty well. I haven't seen this thing fly yet though.) Here's a picture of the monstrosity on Dave's couch (complete with classy '30s art deco styling): [EDIT: I should mention for the technical-minded that this thing has three Estes black-powder F motors canted near the bottom of the 'locomotive,' which propel it upwards with several pounds of force.] ...Here's the "rocket" being cautiously loaded onto its fat ol' launch rod (and sticking a little): ...and here's the launch, which went incredibly well, all things considered. So, after some little repairs, this thing should fly again soon. Hopefully I'll be there next time. ... GregroxMun, you can stop drooling now. Gregrox?
18. Work on the Skymobile Mk2 has Started. Unfortunately, the Skymobile mk1 was unstable, had a low lift-to-weight ratio, was painfully slow and was an absolutely awful rover... ...so I'm trying to improve upon the concept now. Maybe this one will be good enough for a release. Oh, and I have fallen head-over-heels in love with the Shielded Solar Panels... perhaps you've noticed. Pictures! This one still needs *lots* of tweaking, but I like it more than the first one, so far.
19. If it's this type of shaking: (pardon the shameless plug) ...then yes, the shaking is due to the craft being made of mostly massless parts. Another possible cause is that of part-clipping... or an excess of SAS... it's really difficult to tell without screenshots or video. My recommendation in the future is to do the five-minute test: drive the rover around on Kerbin for five minutes, and if it doesn't break, wobble, explode or fall on its side, it should be good for other planets or moons (except for the low-gravity ones, which are always a pain). I know it's not the best solution, and I might be able to come up with something better if I could see your design -Upsilon
20. Sorry for this shameless plug, but I have a KSP music thread. Some of it is meh, some of it is pretty good. All of it is composed with KSP in mind and played by me, along with other Forum-goers. Here's the latest, called 'SUN,' to be played when exiting a planet's SoI:
21. H'm. That wouldn't be rebalancing parts, but adding new capabilities to existing parts. Rebalancing parts involves tweaking parameters that have already been set up, and thus it is quite easy to do. You're right, though - the wings should probably come with a little fuel.
22. Hello! As many of you guys know, KSP now has a whole load of parts that are in need of some significant rebalancing. Here's my attempt to catalog these parts, so that some of them may be potentially changed in 0.91. Please note that these suggestions are just personal opinions, but some changes clearly need to be made. In my opinion, these rebalances would make a much better game. I'm going to do this in a lovely, cutesy sort of way. Rebalances of MASS will be indicated in RED. Rebalances of IMPACT TOLERANCE will be indicated in ORANGE. Rebalances of SAS TORQUE will be indicated in YELLOW. Rebalances of ELECTRIC CHARGE will be indicated in GREEN. Rebalances of LIQUID FUEL/OXIDIZER will be indicated in BLUE. Rebalances of MONOPROPELLANT will be indicated in PURPLE. Rebalances of SPECIFIC IMPULSE will be indicated in BROWN. Rebalances of THRUST will be indicated in 'NAVY BLUE.' Rebalances of COST will be indicated in GRAY. An explanation of why I think the part is incorrectly balanced will be included. I'll go through the sections one by one, from the Command Pod section to the Science Section. PODS:

PART REBALANCE NEEDED REASON

Mk1 Cockpit Impact Tolerance, Monopropellant If anything hit the ground at 45 m/s, any Kerbals inside wouldn't make it. And what sort of fighter jet has monopropellant in the cockpit?

Mk1 Inline Cockpit Impact Tolerance, Monopropellant Much the same as the previous cockpit. I would also mention that this part needs a drag reduction - its drag is a measly 0.88.

Mk1-2 Command Pod Impact Tolerance This otherwise excellent pod once again suffers from incredibly high impact tolerance.

Mk2 Cockpit Mass, Impact Tolerance The Mk2 Cockpit has less mass than even a Mk2 Lander-Can, incredibly high impact tolerance, and even a significant Lift Rating. In other words, it's relatively OP.

Mk2 Inline Cockpit Mass, Impact Tolerance It's pretty much the exact same as the previous Mk2 cockpit in almost every way.

Mk3 Cockpit Mass, Impact Tolerance, SAS Torque, Electric Charge, Monopropellant The singularly most overpowered cockpit of the lot, this thing has a mass lower than the Mk1-2 command pod, a 60 m/s impact tolerance, more torque than the large Reaction Wheel, more than twice the Electric Charge of any other pod, and a cool 100 units of Monopropellant. Gad!

Probodobodyne Okto2 Electric Charge As opposed to the other bits and bobs, this one actually has too fast of Electric Charge consumption for the measly amount of work that it does.

Probodobodyne QBE Impact Tolerance, Electric Charge The Probodobodyne QBE is the lightest unit, but it somehow manages to have a 30 m/s impact tolerance. In addition, they have a bit too much fuel or monopropellant for their mass.

Everything in the Mk2 series Impact Tolerance, Cost These are pretty much like their Mk3 companions, only they're a bit better in the fuel/monopropellant-to-mass ratio. Some of them may have a tad too much lift, as well, but I'm not covering that. Oh, and did I mention that they are bargain-bin cheap?

ENGINES: (Oh boy.) [COMING SOON!] I have no time. COMMAND AND CONTROL: [COMING SOON!] I have no time. STRUCTURAL: [COMING SOON!] I have no time. AERODYNAMICS: [COMING SOON!] I have no time. UTILITY: [COMING SOON!] I have no time. SCIENCE: [COMING SOON!] I have no time. ~~~ In spite of the extremely limited amount of work I've gotten done, I hope that I'll be able to expand on this in the very near future. In the meantime, let me know what you think...! -Upsilon
23. I just realized that I would have needed to get up at about 4:00 AM to make the scriptwriting session, which is why I missed it Oh, and the closest thing I could find to a proper script was Avera9eJoe's Google Doc, which doesn't look as if it has anything new on it. So, what changes have been made?
24. I'm done with the SUN (aka Kerbol, but I'm calling it the Sun because the game does.) I'm probably going to forward this over to Avera9eJoe for percussion, and then see how it sounds from there Hope you enjoy! Let me know what you think And now, it's time to answer some questions... ~~~ Hi Rufus! I saw some of your music on your thread, as you well know. Really great stuff. I'll have to find some song that needs some brass. Maybe JOOL would be best for that. Yep. I tried to capture Moho's heat, and also its general weirdness. Even after 0.90 came out, it's still not very normal. Yep, Ival's right. I'm not actually sure that Blizzy is still planning on inserting the music when it's all done, but we'll see. I'm probably going to tweak all of the pieces before they're published into the mod, at least a little.
25. Oh, I absolutely adore the Ferry Fandom. Their boats are really cool! With all due seriousness, the definition of a fandom is just a group of people who are fans of a certain thing. In that sense, we're already a fandom, though a small and weak one... a "proto-fandom" as you say. We've got the fanfics, we've got the fan art and videos... heck, there's even Kerbal cosplayers. Part of me wishes that there were more people in this little group, but a larger part of me doesn't want this to go the way of some other fandoms, notably the Whovians and the Bronies. While the majority of those fandoms' populations are happy enough watching the episodes at home and maybe commenting on forums every once in a while, there are a few people who take every possible opportunity to mash their beliefs in peoples' faces. These people are the ones that are most known in the fandom, for obvious reasons, and they generate a lot of bad press. I don't want KSP going in that direction.
