The New Resource drill

Lag is not caused by GPU load in KSP, generally speaking. It's CPU-bound, with lag scaling with part count.

Yes, memory use on the other hand scales with number of textures and their size, however its ways to keep texture size down while having things look good.

I just recently installed the Karbonite mod and I've been having a lot of fun designing and implementing a Minmus mining outpost (surface base for extraction, orbital refinery for converting to fuel, lander for shuttling karbonite from one to the other). I'm looking forward to seeing how it is implemented in stock.

We've only seen eve and kerbin which both have atmospheres so maybe they look to be made of resources because u can get protofuel from them? Airless bodies or Duna might not have as much

Looking forward to play witch stock resource system. BTW: More efficient way then having orbital refinery is to heve drill with refinery and then dedicated fuel ferry to orbital fuel depo. Transporting "protofuel" should not be a good idea.

So question then: in real life, why do we collect raw materials and ship them elsewhere to be processed into finished goods, rather than processing them right there at the collection site?

Centralization. Economies of scale. The relative costs of transport vs. processing/refining. Good stuff like that.

In KSP (with 1.0), I expect similar dynamics to emerge- you should have to figure out whether it's worth the time and cost to land a refinery right there with your extractor, or whether you're better off leaving the refinery in orbit. Obviously the permanence of the outpost or length of the mission come into play- if you're just swinging by Dres for a quick visit you probably don't want to land a refinery there, whereas the Mun/Minmus or even Duna/Ike might become a major center of operations for your space program where your rockets stop to refuel on the way to Jool and other locations further out (Gas Planet 2 anyone?)

IRL it is case sensitive. Shiping materials around the world is "litle" diferent in energy consumed then launching it to orbit. That raw material which i need to make fuel has more mass then the final product. Rest is waste from processing. I dont want to cary mass of the useless waste with me to orbit. Only the jucy fuel i need :)
