Ok, so maaaaaybe I might be working on something again.

Whackjob

I may have to change tactic, here. I might have to... build small. Blech.

I can indeed get a very terrific speed going. But I'm trying for a continuous boost. The big stuff with big engines aren't big in one area: Burn time.

Back to the drawing board. No biggie.

Wait, who are you? What have you done to Whackjob?

I would have thought the appropriate response to this problem was to go even bigger! Of course, you might be pushing the limits of the very best computers in existence trying to do this.

Still prototyping, and trying dozens of variations. Here's my best so far, which isn't enough, but I can still make real significant improvements on this yet.

To munar space in less than one half an hour. Not good enough. That's out of fuel and not slowing down to land. More engine, more speed, more madness. Faster faster faster.

Still building, still tinkering. Have another distraction I'm also dealing with, so I'm not giving this enough time at the moment.

I worry I might be barking up entirely the wrong tree. Here's what I tested just now:

DBAA72D9DA1CE2BF043DE19611D5E1C01BA33FA6

A whopping three minutes I gained. Yeah, I can toss all of that on a launcher and hurl it into space in one piece, but is it enough? I don't know.

I'm wondering if I'm saving time by making a beeline for the Mun, or hurting myself, by not going into orbit first. Gonna have to test that out tonight.

You save a little delta-v by launching when the Mun is just coming up over the horizon, and going through a gravity turn and straight on to the Mun (without orbit). The disadvantage is you have to turn, and with big ships that might be dangerous!

So use mainsail-assisted turns, RCS is for weaklings :P

Delta-v isn't so much a concern as time of flight. Trying to whittle that down as much as I can.

But delta-v is your only concern, then. Your time of flight is directly correlated with how much delta-v you spend.

This seems to be the case, going into full orbit seems to waste more of both.

Ok. So tonight's plan of attack: Return to the big, and maniacal, and impractical, but go into orbit first!

Would anyone look down on me if I used the new larger tanks and engines?

#EDIT: My engineering chops are robust enough to where I'm not even concerned about doing a gravity turn. :) Not gonna be a problem.

I wouldn't judge you for it. But I will let you know that the 2.5 meter fuel tanks have the best fueled mass to dry mass ratio in the game.

I'd look down on you for going small!
