What is Magic Boulder Made Of?

Downside Up

Recommended Posts

It was the new Kerbin atmosphere as a solid. It has since sublimated and is whisking its way towards Kerbin. When it arrives the old souposphere will possibly desublimate into another solid mass of the unknown. No idea where it might end up though.

Hopes, dreams and empty promises.

Heh, wow.

Also it would be really nice if we could get it back for 1.0...

I would love if Magic Boulder came back.

It's made out of the same stuff they occasionally serve in our cafeteria at work.

Ugh, not again...

Phil! You can't put unpredictibility in the sandwiches! I'll get your pay cut if you do it again!

Jeez... guy can't take a hint.

From the pictures I've seen of it, it looks radioactive.

I don't think you can "see" radioactivity...

But it is a bit green... like Kerbals... in fact, exactly like Kerbals!

You aren't "seeing" radioactivity. You're seeing light emissions... blast it!

Okay, so you can see quantum energy changes that result in the release of a quanta whose ev is in the visible light spectrum.... and technically this is radiation.

Of course, this type of radiation also powers lightbulbs, leds, lcds... etc.

"Radiation" like alpha or beta or gamma radiation isn't visible.

He didn't say he could see the radioactivity, just that it looked like something that might be radioactive. If one saw a green rock that is the same color as cartoons of uranium, one might think it looked like it would be radioactive.

Technically, I suppose.

I guess it was a poor way of trying to explain that uranium doesn't glow green.

In fact, I would say that if you found a strange object that glowed green... it is FAR SAFER than finding a random ordinary looking metallic object. If it glows green, it is almost certainly a prank; if it doesn't it may be radioactive. The next time you get change, look down and ask "are these strange pieces of metal radioactive?"

Nevermind... pop culture has that effect on us. Radioactive stuff glows ;p

Err... wow.... radioactive money is actually real.

Yeah, the whole "radioactive things glow green" thing is funny. It's true that uranium ores can fluoresce green under ultraviolet light. But probably it comes from the color of phosphorescent material that was used in radium watches (which could be green if doped with copper).

One day a foreign visitor to Los Alamos saw some anti-nuclear protesters on the roadside holding up signs with big green mushroom clouds on them. She was confused and thought they were local farmers selling broccoli.
