The boulder was removed because of changes in the code that forced all objects to have an icon in map view (or something along those lines) which ruined the surprise of the rock. It wasn't because of asteroids being similar to it. I don't think Squad wants to rewrite the game to allow it to exist in secret again.

I always thought it was accidental. I remember when it happened, a great many people were asking about it, and someone official (or semi official) was surprised and suggested it was an accident. Of course this "problem" was never fixed, so it may well have been like what you said.

If the magic boulder did come back how fast until someone would try landing a drilling rig on it.
