"Duna, Ore Bust!" -- a KSP Graphic Novel (COMPLETE)

Flex after engine shut off will shoot you up. Bang comes right and lower then the VTOL jets so it is safe to assume it comes after due to comic time compression and not wanting to do multiple panels that can fit in one ;)

Or maybe she wasn't in her seat when the engines fired and got knocked to the deck.

How the heck would anyone hit their head if the vehicle was thrusting into them?

Also, Kerbflleet.

Whoops! Corrected the spelling, thank you for pointing it out, and you get a 'no-prize'! (it would come with rep, but I need to 'spread it around' :) )

Exactly right on all counts. I did consider that the first jolt would have slammed Lisa down into her seat, but much more important is the well-known fact that the head is the second funniest place for a comic character to get hit. Kerbal anatomy doesn't seem to feature the first funniest place, so there you have it. Anyway, yeah--whatever happened after that to give her that bump was not worth extra panels. Nich gets a 'no-prize' for helping me out on this one. :)

Loved the song. And, of course, the Star Wars reference. :)

Thanks! As I recall certain readers were looking forward to seeing the Kerbfleet lyrics for that particular one :)

Also, you should put the Eve Comic instead of this in your sig because that's the big one now.

Yeah I agree, but I don't have a good image in the Eve comic yet that I can make a banner out of--once I do, I'll replace the old Eve Rocks and KPrize badges with that.

That was good :D Apparently hydrazine turns Kerbals into good singers

And makes the author end the chapter in the wrong spot :) Really, we need to go a bit further--it wouldn't do to start a new chapter, then almost immediately have to leave the Hummlebee again as it coasts in solar orbit and the crew goes into hibernation. So this does make for a longish chapter, but I don't think anyone will mind :)

So yeah, I think it will work, and it really does save a lot of time. Other option was go really, really low, almost to Moho's orbit, which would have brought Hummlebee home in only 165 days--but at a ridiculous intercept velocity. Pre-1.0.4, I would have just aimed for the atmosphere to slow down, but we all know better than that now don't we? :)

Yes, yes we do :) I used to return from Mun and Minmus by simply slamming my ships into atmosphere at full speeds. But in 1.0.x? First "old style" return turned into a pandemonium of re-entry flames, exploding parts and me screaming "OHNONONONONONO!!!" Luckily capsule survived, but heat shaved all my science parts off it. Yes - now i know better :)

Yes, we do. And it's hard-won knowledge!

Gone are the fantastical days of fearlessly slamming into Eve's atmosphere at 14 km/s.

Excellent orbital solution on your/Bill's part.

Happy landings!

Yup. Pre- 1.0.4: "I'll be OK no matter what my velocity is, as long as I can touch atmosphere" Post- 1.0.4: "I am doomed, no matter what my velocity is, if I touch atmosphere."

Nice solution. I think it should probably work. Loved Walt's input :)

Thanks, I really do hope so! BTW just re-read and noted that Bill (and I) just naturally said "towards Jool" when describing a direction further away from the sun than Duna. Poor ignored and lonely space potato Dres...

You made up the characters exactly as I pictured them!

Thanks, that comment makes me very happy--I wanted above all to stay true to the core 'orange suit' personalities that everyone knows and loves from their own games.

I thought I should let you know I caught myself singing 'What do you do with a ragdoll Kerbal?' in the shower the other day. :D

Hahaa, achievement unlocked :) Maybe you can record an album of all the shanties that appear here and in Geschosskopf's reports :)

You got them very good! I totally love your adventure!

Yeah, I sometimes find it that the guys in orange have quite icreased accident rate... with quite high proportion of almost fatal cases. Especially, you know who. I call it Jeb effect. In my current career Jeb and Bob even survived 2 cases of half-destroyed return vehicle

As for Valentina, in my 1.0 career she didn't have the luck of the original trio. It was halfway a glitch (damn timewarp!) halfway bad planning (shouldn't have left Pe at 4 km), but... she was the first to reach the Mun... My only Kerbalnaut lost :'(

Glad that in your game she's fine.

I've just caught up with this - it's great.

About capturing at Kerbin, the trick should be to catch the Mun in a way that gives the Humblebee a gravity assist that captures it into a Kerbin orbit, that way you capture without touching the atmosphere. But I've only done that by chance and I don't know if it's possible in a retrograde entry.

Really liked your comic strip/novel and general design of your crafts, any chance we can get the craft files?

Thank you! You can get the Pogo over at the Spacecraft Exchange. I'm holding off sharing the Hummlebee until after the mission ends, same as the three main ships in "Eve: Order Zero". Are there any specific ships you are looking to try out other than these?

I love the series!

Will you submit other craft like the gliido or ore piggie to kerbalx?

Yes, I may release the Gliido or other support craft--but as Starhawk said, just not the Hummlebee yet. Will happen when I have time to work out the last couple of bugs in the design. I'll put a note here when I do release something. Thanks for reading!

  • 2 weeks later...

Loving the story, and the design of the Hummlebee especially; I never realized you could use a design like that for Duna exploration (I'm an idiot for not using Kerbal Engineer until now even though I've been playing for a year now). I even tried to replicate it to give it a spin, and I think I've got the essence right (70t, 360 thrust, dV of 2100), and it behaves pretty well flying around KSC if you keep the speed above 75 m/s. I just cannot get the Orange Knight working, I'll lose control and crash on the runway around 50 m/s, well before I reach takeoff speed, no matter what I try. In the end I just strapped a couple of big rockets to the wings and launched straight up, throttling to hug the sonic wall on my way up. Did you have to do anything special to overcome control issues on the runway?
