My question is: Why is Marquee in code banned?

Effectively, it makes a scrolling, sliding, or bouncing piece of text, here's some example usage:

<marqu.ee>This text will scroll from right to left</marquee>

<marqu.ee direction="up">This text will scroll from bottom to top</marquee>

<marqu.ee direction="down" width="250" height="200" behavior="alternate" style="border:solid">
  <marqu.ee behavior="alternate">

I can't imagine how this could cause a problem, but then again, this is the internet.

Last September (before I was a mod), I noticed that in a certain thread the marquee tags were working, which some other posters were using to good comic effect. I later saw a thread in the Kerbal Network discussing HTML tags, so I made a post saying that marquee definitely worked and attempted to demonstrate but it didn't work there. In the interest of science, I went to the thread I had seen them in and edited one of my posts to include some marqueed text, just a test to see what I was doing wrong. The post was the last on the page, and when I submitted the edit I saw to my combined horror and amusement that the entire bottom of the page, from my post downward, was marqueeing across my screen (text, frames, buttons, images and all). I tried to edit it to remove the tags but it didn't seem to be working (and it was hard to hit the moving buttons).

I was in the #kspofficial IRC channel at the time, and a while later sal_vager joined so I figured I should fess up:

sal took me to PM to figure out exactly what I had done, and his clever solution was to add "<marque.e>" to the forum profanity filter to strip it from the post. I was fairly concerned that I was going to get in a bit of trouble over this, and a bit later Kasper messaged me on IRC, starting like this:

So, to answer your question, the marquee tag is banned because I accidentally broke a tiny bit of the forum with it.

For science! Thanks for the funny story. If it was removed from the swear filter would the forums be slightly broken again? How come the marquee tags weren't disabled when all the other HTML tags were?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think sal added it to the forum filter as a quick fix until a more thorough disabling of HTML could be completed.

Not even going there, the damage the marquee tag can do to vBulletin is not a joke, we're not having that unbanned until VB fix their end, if they ever do.

Is there a standard to how reports should be written, or can it be any length, as long as it delivers the message? Also, does it mean something if no action is taken?

There's not really a standard, but it is helpful if you can describe how you think the post violates the rules. If you are reporting a thread that is a duplicate or should be merged, a link to the other thread is very helpful.

If no visible action is taken on a reported post, that can mean several things:

- The reported post was handled in a non-public way, like via PM or a warning/infraction without editing the post.

- The reported post has not been handled yet. Some of them are cases where we need to discuss amongst ourselves whether or what action is appropriate; sometimes it gets reported when there are few or no moderators online to take care of it.

- The reported post was deemed not worthy of moderation. Sometimes people report posts for petty reasons, other times the reporter is more sensitive about a rule than we are. We tend to err on the side of under-moderation rather than over-moderation, so sometimes it can seem like we're not acting on reports that the reporter thinks we should.

Don't in any way take this as discouragement of reporting posts; if anything we'd much prefer to deal with occasional unnecessary reports than have serious rule-breaking go unreported.
