Constellation Mission Packs Discussion Thread!

Starting work on Altair, trying to find a way that is different from all the Oscar-B/xenon tank ones.

Also, I haven't shown much of my stuff, so pick one: Copernicus DTV or SPR rover?

Only one that is oscar b and xenon. there are a load of ways to do it.

Ooh now that is hard choice. Hmm.. DTV?

Glorious! Good job man. So it breaks into three?

If I was being super picky I would say that the part that the Orion first docks to doesn't connect at both ends. There is a gap at the larger end. And the hab should be slightly larger than the width of the main body and a little bit shorter. Aside from that it looks good!

Yup, three parts, all ready to be plopped on an Ares V. By the Orion docking thing do you mean the docking t-truss?

There's not much I can do about the width of the TransHab, but I'll see about making it a bit shorter.

Yeah the t-truss thing.

I am beginning a powered decent to duna, with the cargo lander.

KhvOjQ5.png

The worst is over now, almost time to pop the chutes:

4IRr04i.png

Is spun around a bunch, but then settled like this:

kjg8dgV.png

At about this point, I realized that I had left infinite fuel on, and that 2 of my engines weren't firing, because they were "Occluded" by a fairing base I had slightly clipped into them.

TuvkMqI.png

I cannot believe what a good job I did landing it! Normally I'm terrible at landings!

Final report: Many problems, to be fixed. Lag: Possibly to much.

The lag is incredible! I may end up making 2 versions, this one, and a simpler, lower part count one.

What do you think, and what are you working on?

Ok where do I begin.. It looks great man! A little messy but that can be cleaned up, hide those cubic struts and such.

Whats going on with the ramp? In one pic its lowered then when landing its up again and the DIPS is clipping through it alarmingly.

Whats the part count? Other than those little issues its looking really great man.

Yeah, I'm working on cleaning it up, I'm of two minds about the cubic struts. First, they sort of look like the structure on it, and they add a bunch of parts, so if I hide them, I might as well use a more parts friendly solution. On the other hand, well... they add a lot of a parts, and don't look so great.

As to the ramp, it is designed to clip through the DIPS, but I didn't unbind it from wasd, so it moved around a bunch.

Part count: 621. Nasty, right?

EDIT:

For example, this test, with *just* 420 parts:

So, where are you guys in terms of hardware?

Which of these do you have?

Ares I:

Ares V:

Orion:

Altair:

NTRPS:

MTV:

Cargo lander:

Crew lander:

SPR:

I have:

Ares I: Yes

Ares V: Yes, but needs testing

Orion: Yes

Altair: Yes

NTRPS: Yes, but needs testing

MTV: No

Cargo lander: 75% Tested

Crew lander: No

SPR: Going through another rebuild

I think that's it, if you don't want to answer one of the questions, don't worry. :)

Ares I: needs moar strut

Ares V: Just about complete

Orion: Ready, but needs Ares I

Altair: Yes, but needs other stuff.

NTRPS: Attached to the back o DTV

DTV: Needs testing

Cargo lander: Nope

Crew Lander: Needs testing

SPR: Yes

Ares I: Yes, needs more testing.

Ares V: No, I've done a little work on the EDS.

Orion: Yes, completely finished.

Altair: No, still scoping out the design.

NTRPS: Yes, just considering whether it'll need more dv.

MTV: Yes, completely finished.

Cargo lander: No, but it will use the basic framework of the crew lander.

Crew lander: No, needs legs, thrust balancing, and DIPS/FSPS (if needed)

SPR: Yes, completely finished.

Remind me, which landers do the FSPS and DIPS go on?

420 is better. The issue is we have two craft that have to sit next to each other.. So its over 800 parts both together. Damn this game needs major optimization..

I have redesigned the body of my SPR. All I will say is it's awesome!

Clever use of parts!

EDIT:

New SPR rebuild:

Hmm. whats going on in there? Are you cutting back on parts? Or have you put a pod in there so the crew can transfer to the hab?

Can't wait to see your SPR, and yes, I did go for a pod-based SPR.

The faces are there because the forums turn ":D" in to ":D", as in "Craft:Done" "Craft:Done".

Also, you're so close to done! Congrats, I think you'll finish first!

LOL whoops. Yeah so close yet so far! I am not willing to launch this mission before Squad fixes the game a bit. The lag currently stops it being fun. It was ok in 0.90 so I am hopeful of an improvement.

Well, from this video*, the DIPS is in both, but not the FSPS, which kind of makes sense, after all, you don't want to store RTG near the crew, but I don't know what the 2nd DIPS is for.

Sorry about the lag, I was amazed at the difference between 600 and 400 parts.

*At this point:
