Kerbin Circumnavigation 1.0.4/1.0.5 - Aviator Challenge Continuation

Recommended Posts

Nice time. Can't wait to beat it. :)

In the meantime, I've been messing around with wheesleys. I decided if it's not going to go much more than mach 1.2 or so, who really needs a canopy? Might as well enjoy the breeze. I think Jeb appreciates the decision.

Puuuh...i did it

With a parachute it was possible to low speed on runway much faster (but it took several attempts).

Here the results, a little Video will follow soon.

Maybe retrograde is even faster. I'll try it.

OoOoO finally someone passes us! I'll have to try even harder now!

On my 39:59, I made the decision to leave parachutes off and rely on airbrakes (I wanted to keep drag as low as possible, and hadn't really put much thought into just how much shorter chutes make the landing). I also had two tails on that plane... just because it was the obvious and easy way to maintain symmetry. The less obvious way was to centrally mount a tail plane on the MkII-2x1.25 connector and translate it back and down to fit in the gap between my intakes. I also tried some experimentation with pitching the wings slightly to try to keep the nose as straight as possible to minimize drag from the fuselage. That didn't work all, cutting my cruising speed down to about 1680. So, after all those lesson learned, I put this together which I'll call the Mark IV version of my Hotknife craft. There's probably a *little* room for improvement (for instance an easy second off my time if I hadn't forgotten to change the navball from target to surface after selecting my runway beacon flag until after I'd landed) but this has to be getting pretty close to some kind of limit. :D

Anyway, here's my current best:

gah, i could have managed 39:45 easily but i mounted my chute wrong and had no yaw control i couldn't manage it after 100 tries.

Hm....I think with 39.45, I'm taken already in the runway:wink:

@ExaltedDuck

wow wow wow....congratulations :) that's the kick i need.

I 've tested today also a 2 Rapier plane. Be aware i'll be back

Oh my god, I haven't even finished testing yet!

Well, I guess I have no choice.

many, many quickloads...

edit: oops, ignore pic #4...

the reason is, F1 doesn't work for me so i use a "sleep 2; scrot" from the command line. however this time i switchted windows to slow...

also, still 200+ fuel left! must try again.

also, less than 5 quickloads! i feel proud :D

edit: you may have noticed that bob disappeared... this is totally not because I threw him off at takeoff...

edit2: gah, bill not bob... ;)

oops.

also, i have a question about pilot assistant. in "roll and yaw control", i set it to 90 degrees, but it constantly decreases a bit. do you know why?

The assistant reads 90 degrees as an average heading, and since you aren't quite on the equator to begin with, what you set to 90 degrees will slowly deviate as you get closer and closer to the real equator.

This is a bit painful for me to watch since my aero model is corrupt for some reason. I can't defend myself!

I really need to fix that, but for now, onto the board.

Aww, man. I was on a big winning streak in FTL yesterday. I have a Zoltan cruiser with a Blast Laser II, two Halberd beams, and a couple of Mantis crew members I freed from slavers. The rebellion doesn't know what's been hitting them. But it sounds like I'm needed on planet Kerbin tonight. :D

What started off as a test flight became a record flight, with a total time of 39:32 [1 extra second for the difference in screenshots at the end]. It was a prograde run, so obviously that can be fixed. Also, thank god the landing gear is practically indestructible!

Well I did it. The RTG's and solar panels blew up multiple times. Lots and quicksaving and reloading.

Tip: The alternator from the Jet engines provides power to your craft. No external sources required.

You got a pretty good plane there! This can be a velocity contender, or even expedition with the right modifications. Maybe look into that sometime.

[That's also a ton of air intakes you got]

Welcome to the board, and here's the proof!

I just made a MK 2 version. Since I have power I put science on the craft! Also trying for the grand Circumnavigation now, but that will have to wait for tomorrow.
