Nuclear engines are so boring now...

No lie, 1.0.2 spoiled me. Nuclear engines are just ... boring. Even in RO/RSS I have to worry about hydrogen boil-off. There's no tension waiting to see just how hot they'll get during the burn.

Now that the heating has been fixed in stock nukes are just ... boring.

Just another engine.

Booooooooooooooorrrrrriiiiiiinnngggg.

I guess you have no choice now but to attempt a Mun landing using nothing but solid boosters to keep yourself amused.

Could you provide an explanation as to it's "boring" aura?

Before we got radiators, you had to think about the design of your rocket if you wanted to use the LV-N. You had to build around the heat the engine put out by adding your own heat-sinks or making an adequately large rocket that the spread of heat and meant the engine itself wouldn't explode. There was more design gameplay, now it's just a matter of adding a part with no thought or clever intent.

EDIT: And there was an element of "will-it-won't-it" gameplay in flight, the same thing many people say they like about not having all the information about dV available to them. "Will my flight have enough fuel to return from the Mun?" "Will my engine overheat on this 15 minute burn?". It's the same thing, but seems to be being phased out from the game by the devs.

No, I just reinstalled RO.

Would you rather have the thermal output higher? In that case, just set the thrust limiter back, and take several hours to make burns. If you ask me, this sounds like an answer to all the complaints about the engine requiring lots of time, which was a "bad" thing.

But I suppose the grass is always greener on the other side, eh? What do you do in that case? Set your lawn on fire.

That makes no sense. The thermal discharge is enough to offset any thermal output at this point.

I honestly 100% agree. I love the lack of the dV, makes it exciting. If you want that get a mod, but dont taint the stock game. The guessing keeps it fun.

Due to the stock game and my skills in it becoming TDR (too damn reliable), I elected to install Kerbal Launch Failure with a modified, stupidly high failure rate of 1:10. KSP is now genuinely exciting, and terrifying.

Stock was genuinely exciting as well, again. For a time.

Having to manage the volatile resources of a true NERVA, or something along those lines, might legitimately be cool.

But honestly, I can't believe there are now people complaining that heat management was more fun when we didn't have the tools to do anything about it. Girders are not heat control, and they're damn ugly when you use them as such.

I'm a bit sick of the community, including seasoned veterans, talking as if the game was better off without the newest huge improvements. Nervas are boring because they aren't prone to explode while you aren't looking? Really? Get failure mods if you want your game to be worse.

I take great pride in the fact that I've come to a point where the core game and my skills became TDR. Seeing what I can build and accomplish is the whole game to me. I'm glad to be past the novice phases. Having mildly heavy rockets collapse on themselves despite 700 structural struts in 0.22 was a drag. It was not "exciting".

I don't get it; the information about ∆v is always available in stock. It shows your craft's mass, doesn't it? It shows the engine's I_sp, doesn't it? It shows the amount of fuel remaining, doesn't it? That's ∆v.

The LV-N engine overheating so badly was actually a really new development that came about because of the heating system changes in 1.0.x so it's not like I'm talking ancient history here, thank you very much, and that new mechanic spiced things up in the stock game for me. Haven't had so much fun in stock since 0.21, believe it or not, there was actually some consideration to building a craft again.

I, too, am quite happy that the days of floppy rockets are over.

I dont look at mass or do any stupid math, I have fun eyeballing it and seeing if it works.

Not having your rocket's dV but having those other stats would be like not having its mass, but knowing - by element - how many moles of that atom were in each part.

LOL.

This is actually quite realistic, given the Kerbals' propensity to "dumpster-dive" and trigger "unintended ignitions".
